View Full Version : Hickson's Punishment

Well, the whole Hickson punishment situation seemed unusual to me.

We have the rookie who supposedly has the great work ethic missing a team bus. We have the coach who's normally more private about locker room issues than Howard Hughes suddenly airing dirty laundry like his washing machine broke.

Is it just a new strategy from Mike Brown trying to take a page from the Phill Jackson hand book or is he legitimately frustrated? Dunno.

Mike Brown sent a pretty clear message to J.J. Hickson by benching him until the last few minutes of the game because he missed the bus to shootaround this morning. Mike then had some things to say to the media (http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2008/10/cavs_insider_hickson_fined_wes.html)about it after the game, which he usually doesn't do. Players have been fined and missed buses and even practices before -- as Devin Brown did last season, sending him into Brown's doghouse -- but he's never talked about it like this. It was part of Hickson's punishment, to have it brought to light. The rookie is very talented but he's also immature in many respects, which is to be expected of a 20-year-old, but nonetheless has already frustrated Brown in the first few weeks of the season. He will get his minutes and sometimes he's going to look good, but he's going to have moments that remind everyone of his age and experience level. Keep that in mind.

At least he wasn't sent to his room and make him think of what he have done.

Hopefully Lebron can kind of take him under his wing and reinforce what the coach is trying to tell him. The message sometimes gets driven home more effectively when you see how it affects your peers. I can't imagine the kid being a continuing distraction but hell, when I was 20 my main concern was how many games of beer pong I could win in a row.

It's preseason...Coach has a goatee...He was feeling kinda wild, and wanted to live on the edge for once...

Why must everyone make a mountain out of a molehill.....It's nothing big, the kid missed the bus, he got punished by getting barely any minutes.

I'm not seeing any mountain...in fact I barely see a molehill here. :chuckles:

Questions about the "Evil Mike Brown" from an alternate universe begin to surface, and for good reason. Still can't get over why people from evil alternate universes always wear the goatee. It's been a dead give away ever since Roddenberry exposed that trick back in the 60's.

I think Mike Brown is very good with motivating young players, and this is one trick in his bag. What do you do with the smart kid who does his homework five minutes before class and does just enough for a B-minus? You remind him that he should be getting As, and you call him out on it.

I like the punishment, it fit the crime. I might have actually held him out for the whole game. Missing a team bus is huge. I might not start even Lebron if he missed the team bus. Glad to see discipline is still big to MB. Hope JJ learns, I am sure he will.

Missing the team bus isnt huge. It's a blip on the NBA screwup radar. Repeated bus misses with no urgency to follow rules would then be cause for some real concern.

Hickson is being fasttracked meaning there will not be any training wheels or babying. This is all about getting him from rookie to NBA professional as fast as possible and you do that by demanding as much of you can from him and challenging him.

Good that MB is taking some initiative on the disciplinary front. I'd like it if he were to bench LBJ if he missed the bus, that would send a message to the team and Bron to show who is running the team.

Thing is, Bron doesnt miss busses. There is no one more proffessional in the entire NBA than Lebron. This just shows the rookie this is not college or highschool anymore. Its a job with expectations.

Yeah i've never heard anything out of the team about LBJ doing something bad, to bad because benching him would send shock waves to the team (and possibly get us a new coach :chuckles:)

I do think Brown treats vets differently as they've earned their stripes in the league, but a rook is fair game - especially one being fast-tracked.

In light of the recent revelation that Mike Brown has grown a goatee, I have gone ahead and shaved mine off because it is clearly no longer cool anymore.

Split... grow out the mutton chops. Chester A. Arthur-style. I suggest this so that eventualy Mike Brown will copy your style again.

Heh, I went to a concert last night that was supposed to include ZZ Top, but they backed out at the last minute. I don't even want to think about 4-foot long beards right now... I still feel robbed.
