View Full Version : Spring Game

The teams have been drafted:

Some key notes:

* Punter Trapasso was the first taken. In the past, the first overall taken has usually been a serious playmaker, or it occurred at a position where the drop off from the 1st guy to the 2nd was huge. Considering that this game usually comes down to who screws up the least on special teams, since the teams are just thrown together with little time to practice, going with a punter first isn't a bad idea. Especially if the drop off to the second guy is huge. The other team got the starting long snapper and kicker.
* The order of RBs taken: Haw, Maurice Wells, Chris Wells. Pittman and and Lane are being held out due to injuries. Who'd of thought Haw would go first and C Wells last? I would of guessed that to be reversed. It's good to see Haw stepping up. JT says he's never had such a good stable of RBs...
* WR draft order: Ted Ginn Jr. (G), Anthony Gonzalez (S), Brian Robiskie (G), Brian Hartline (S), Albert Dukes (G), Devon Lyons (S). Hall, a senior, was assigned to G. The first two were no brainers, but I found it interesting that coache's son is at the head of the young stable of WRs. At least in the eyes of his peers, who drafted him.
* At CB, true freshman Kurt Coleman is already ahead of Sirjo Welch and Brandon Underwood. Could the Underwoods possibly be any more of a disappointment?
* At C, Tyler Whaley was taken ahead of Jim Cordle.
* Despite being a sieve on pass plays during the jersey scrimmage, Boone was the first OL taken. Course, as bad as he was at pass blocking, he was totally dominant in run blocking.
* Best quote: * Troy Smith, QB, Scarlet -- ”The Scarlet is way better and will be more equipped for the game. I see our receivers and the depth we have up front is unmatchable."

Check that, just heard Ginn on the Bucknut's Radio hour: "All our QBs are good. I like all their balls."

The kick scrimmage sounds like it went well, with Teddy returning one 80 yards and Pettrey kicking a 60 yard FG: http://ohiostate.scout.com/2/522529.html

They're basically playing flag football....

Troy Smith was able to walk around everywhere with his little black jersey on that said "you can't touch me"...

Most boring thing ever...

Yeah pretty much..lol glad no one got hurt or anything. The guy in the Lake County News Herald referred to him as Dick Tressell

I have no problem with them not being allowed to hit Troy. He (and i think Zwick) were the ONLY ones who weren't allowed to be hit. Troy played ONE series. ONE!!!! the rest of the game was with QBs they could clobber. Not to mention ALL the RBs and WRs were fair game. This was buckeye football in April. How can you not like that? If it was the Bruins, you would understand.

CDT, Dick Tressel is the running back coach for Ohio State. He's Jim Tressel's older brother.

At any rate, here's the coverage: http://ohiostate.scout.com/2/522924.html

A record breaking crowd of 63,649 showed up! The scarlet won 12-0. Not that I posted it here or anything, but I was saying after I saw the rosters that I just couldn't see how the gray could win this thing. The scarlet looked better on both sides of the ball.

CDT, you asked about Chris Wells. He was the game's leading rusher with 48 yards on 11 carries.

I was at the game. It was quite a snoozer except for the first drive where Smith could prance around and drove down the field to lead Scarlet to the only touchdown of the game. Zwick looked TERRIBLE. Bad pocket presence. Under throws, over throws, you name it throws. He just doesn't look like a good quarterback at all. I woulnd't be surprised if he's not the #2 quarter back by the first game of the season. Boeckman and Shoenoft(sp?) each at least put to get things that resembled drives and had intercepts, but they both still looked much better than Zwick and even Zwick couldn't get hit. I wish he wouldve gotten nailed.

Chris Wells is a player. He is really big. I can't wait to see this guy in action during the regular season. Maurice Wells is trash... I wish Pittman would have been able to play though so we could've seen him and Wells compared to each other.

Ginn only had like 2 balls thrown his way the entire time. One was underthrown and inbetween two defenders on a deep throw. he nearly made something out of it. The other was a short pass but he made a hell of a grab. He didn't get to return any kickoffs or punts(you could only faircatch anyways) so that kind of sucked...i wanted to see if he had learned how not to fumble them. lol

Tressell compared Chris Wells to Jim Brown  How did that Rose DE from Glenville do?

04-23-2006, 08:19 PM
well i hate to brake it to u guys, but season has not started yet... i dont really want to see are guys getting tackled right now... If troy smith would go down we could just forget about the season... i heard like 63 thousand people wasther damn!!!!!!!!!!

How did that Rose DE from Glenville do?
He's in high school at Glenville. We won't see him till summer camp.

He didn't get to return any kickoffs or punts(you could only faircatch anyways) so that kind of sucked.
This is also an injury precaution. Injuries occur on kick and punt returns more often than other plays. It does suck though, as they're also some of the most exciting plays. Especially when you have Ted Ginn!

Just reading more analysis of spring, our 3 freshman that enrolled in time for spring ball were all just unreal. Chris Wells is the next Jim Brown. Ross Homan, Mr. Football in Ohio this year, was said to be the next AJ Hawk when he commited. Everyone was like "Yeah right." He came into spring, and as an 18 year old, not knowing the playbook, first time playing with big time college talent, was the best lb out there, and looked like AJ Hawk. Kurt Coleman stepped in and in his first action in college looks to be either our best or second best CB (behind Jenkins), and a starter. You couldn't of asked for any more than what we got from these three kids. Steve Helwagon said it best, "Wow, wow, and wow!"

JT rules.
