Tressel knew of gear scheme last April

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not sure you guys are thinking. How do you prove this? How is this any more than he said she said?

Lying and blackmail. I guess Tressel really is a Senator.

Wetzel and Yahoo have a history of breaking items like this very thing. It's doubtful that he decided to run the article w/o something that can be proven.

If tSV knew about this last April, more than likely he didn't have ALL the details of what went down.

Kind of answers why the suspended players were allowed to play the Bowl game. Maybe Tress knew it was going to come out once the season ended so might as well play his big horses while he could. Or maybe tSV knew everything and decided to make the run at the NC or bust. We won't really know, JMO

It'll be interesting what the university has to say in response.

If Tress were in the SEC, everyone would be screaming, "Typical". It happens in every conference, nearly every campus. Some just hide it better than others.

It won't be he said she said though. Tressel might have found out something and actually launched an investigation at that time, and then could not find any evidence to what he was told or found out. That's very possible. Another option might be that Tressel did in fact know and did find wrong doing, but didn't report it.

I don't believe Jim Tressel is going to try to coverup anything. He won't be untruthful, so the he said she said isn't a question. He either found out something and investigated. He found out something and didn't investigate or Yahoo is totally wrong.

No matter what, Tressel will be honest.

Playing his "big dogs" doesn't matter when the entire season is at risk of being vacated.

Its a golden rule in journalism that two sources are needed to report something. The fact that a credible reporter like Wetzel would break this story with a single unnamed source tells me that he feels very strongly about this source.

I got a bad feeling about this.

Another thought. Even if Tressel found out something and then investigated it, OSU and him and everyone involved actually stated they just found out all of this last December 8th.

I'm not optimistic this is going to end well for football at OSU.

So if it comes out he knew and did nothing about it what could happen to the Senator and OSU's program?

I don't know what to make of this story. I'm not a die hard OSU fan but I do feel there is a bias against them. From the surface it seems like Tressel keeps his program in check and stresses the important things; being a man not a boy, understanding discipline, respect authority, play hard, and learn something in college. While many SEC teams are football factories that do whatever it is they need to do in order to win. If you are going to cheat, make sure you don't get caught mentality.

I'm sure OSU is not squeeky clean but I have the impression that they are cleaner than most big time and even mid major programs. However; I think the media really wants to knock them down while at the same time sweep SEC troubles under the rug. I could be wrong but that's just how I see it.

So if it comes out he knew and did nothing about it what could happen to the Senator and OSU's program?

The article says that Tressel can be fired with Cause for a violation like this. Not sure if that will happen but it's possible.

As far as OSU they can go backwards and take away their BCS Bowl Win. They can reduce scholarships in future years, and/or they can put a post season ban on the team for future years. It's anyone's guess at this point.

This is not a death penalty offense but if they knew about it in April, tried to sweep it under the rug until they couldn't hide it anymore than I can see a penalty of the BCS win, a 2 yr post season ban and a mild reduction in scholarships.

If there is any wrong doing this will fall more on the coach than the program. Id say the closest thing to something like this is the Bruce Pearl thing where he provided false information during an NCAA investigation. He was suspended 10 games and docked pay. In this case, Tressel would have provided false information by saying he knew nothing about it. Im not sure it would affect the program as far as scholarships, future bans games vacated. This is a more of a coach wrong doing than a program wrong doing if Tressel withheld information from his AD.

I don't see how they can go vacating seasons because the rules the football players broke happened when they were a freshmen and they would have vacated the games in the initial ruling if that was the case. This would be a rule involving a coach and Ohio State protected itself by being able to fire a coach with cause if they don't report things they find out.

The concerns I have revolve around the reporters of Yahoo sports and saying they investigated this info from their source for two months. If there was not some smoke about this, they would not have stuck their name on this report or even reported it.

No matter what, Tressel has to answer the report. This does not look good to me. At this point I am willing to wait for more information and to hear what Tressel and OSU has to say about it, but it does not look good. These reporters totally know/knew they would be questioned about this article, so it's hard to believe that even parts of it are not true. They must have the evidence or proof otherwise they would not be risking their careers to put out a totally false story.

No, I think they have an unnamed source and not much else right now, otherwise we would have the evidence already in their initial report. The Dispatch also reports they are scrambling to get phone/email records and stuff to prove it.

That tells me they have nothing as of now.

This seems like some weak sauce at the moment. I assume Yahoo believes its source, but without an email or text message or something stronger than "a source says," it's pretty hard to see how the accusation will stick. And you can bet that if Yahoo had more evidence it would have been in that story.

If Tressel explicitly knew his players were doing this in April, and told no one, and it can be proven, then he and OSU are in for a huge shitstorm. But for that happen, Yahoo is gonna have to reveal its source and show the trail that lead Tressel to knowing.

Granted I don't know Tressel personally, but I can't imagine he'd sweep something like this under the rug.
