Anderson Varejao Trade Ideas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Thing is, this upcoming draft has a plethora of C's:

Cody Zeller
Nerlens Noel
Stephen Adams
Alex Len
Alec Brown
Isaiah Austin

About 3,4 more, but who knows if they'll come out.

There are a few young, promising, developmental bigs that I could think of. The list isn't pretty:

Derrick Favors
Enes Kanter
Jonas V
Myers Leonard
Cole Aldrich
Dan Orton

It would take a ton to get Favors.

I'd like to see Dan Orton in the Wine and Gold.

I think he's got a pretty good deal of potential. He's on the Lakers now as a result of that Howard trade, correct? The Lakers seem to have a championship window of about three years with their current group, and I think Andy would fit very well on that Laker squad with a big-men tandem of Howard-Gasol-Jamison-Hill-Varejao.

During RCF2, I thought it was interesting that Brian Windhorst pointed out the Cavs might want a young big with upside in any Varejao trade. Here are a few ideas I had.

1. AV to Utah for Raja Bell and Enes Kanter. Bell and the Jazz have had a total falling out and he is sitting at home waiting to be traded for a buyout. In this case the Cavs take on Bell's contract and either pay him enough to buy him out (thanks Dan Gilbert), or he makes the team at another player's expense. He is still a solid defender at least. Kanter is a 20 year old with toughness who can rebound and has range on his shot. Somewhat similar to Tyler Zeller, but with much more upside. Not utilized well by Utah last year. The Jazz get out from Bell's situation and also get a great defensive big, something Jefferson and Millsap are definitely not.

2. Same trade, but the Cavs throw in the Kings pick and its for Derrick Favors instead of Kanter.

3. The Cavs trade Varejao to the Clippers for DeAndre Jordan. Cavs get a young athletic player who fits their style. Clippers get a veteran who can fit with their team and help them win now. May be some picks involved. My biggest worry is that Jordan and TT would be one atrocious free throw shooting front court.

Let me know some ideas you have.

Worst. (offensive) Frontcourt. Ever.

Pretty sure if we traded Varejao we'd be getting in a 1st rounder as the biggest part of the deal.

av to MN for williams and mn's 1st
we would get a sf/pf with potential comming off the bench as well as a mid round pick that can turn into the 14th pick

And then we'd also see the firing of Minnesota's GM the next day.

There's no way they'll trade the #2 pick in last year's draft and a potential lottery pick for an injury-prone, 30 year old center. I doubt Minnesota is shooting for the Finals this year, and I think the best fit for Andy would be on a Finals contender, where he could provide high-energy minutes off of the bench.

With the past history we have with the Timberwolves...I have a feeling they'll just hang up the phone when they know the Cavaliers are on the other end.

i think another situation we could get involved in is i okc decides to trade harden. The rockets are really high on him and can offer kmartin. lamb and torontos pick. We could than try and come in as the 3rd team and give them andy for torntos pick.

So why would we not try to land A center in Free Agency still?

Howard, Kaman, Bynum, Al Jefferson are all unrestricted free agents next year. at the next teir down you also have robin lopez, Pachulia and Dejuan Blair. I am not saying we wont draft a big as well, but we have the cp space to accomoadate a real center if we have the rest figured out. i also like Demar Derozen as a free agent small forward. i personally think we can afford both Derozen and another high end free agent.

When they signed AK 47 and Stiemsma, I moved Minnesota down on my list of possible destinations for Andy. They need some team defenders, but now they have invested a lot of money in a few. There has always been a strong belief that Kahn covets Andy, but that rumor went cold a long time ago.

Houston continues to be a likely destination. They have what the Cavs want -picks and young players- and the only center they have on their roster is Omar Asik.

houston wont be any good be the trade deadline, but if they were you are right they have there own pick pluse the raptors pick

because landing a starting-caliber center who fits in the long-term plans via free agency is borderline impossible?

kaman is a horrible option. blair and zaza aren't starting caliber centers unless you surround them with 2++ all stars. lopez hasn't yet proven he's capable of starting at center, tho he'll probably be paid as if he can.

bynum is likely to stay in philly because they'll offer him the max and an opportunity to be the #1 guy.

jefferson is the only semi-realistic worthwhile target but his age is somewhat concerning.

demar derozan is a sg, and if he were a sf he's still not a great option given how absolutely terrible the starting wings would be at shooting.

so houston just gave $25M to a center in his mid 20s who, while a good (overrated) defender, is total aids on offnse. and houston is still a likely destination for another center who is older, more injury prone, and almost equally bad on offense? what?

Derozan is a SF and he'd be great here but it's highly unlikely imo.

he has been a sg his entire career and is only forced to the 3 now because of terrence ross.

regardless, i don't see how it can be great when the result would be abysmal mid-long range shooting from players starting at 2-4. that is a massive handicap for an offense to overcome.

he has been listed as a SF more thanthis season. he can clearly play 3 in any case

if you take the attitude that we will never recruit a top name free agent, then your only hope it to get lucky with the ping pong balls. i think you can build a team of possibilities that woudl be attractive to a free agent, but i dont think you can beat a miami on drafts..
