Walt Disney Co. is buying Lucasfilm in a $4 billion deal that brings the best-selling "Star Wars" franchise under the Disney umbrella, with plans to release Episode 7 of the long-running saga in 2015.

Disney has long had a close relationship with closely held Lucasfilm and founder George Lucas, including featured attractions at Disney theme parks such as Star Tours at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.

"It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers," said Lucas, 68, in a statement.

The cash and stock deal is valued at about $4.05 billion, Disney said. Lucasfilm is solely owned by George Lucas.

"This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value," Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement.

Lucas will act as creative consultant on the new Star Wars film, with more feature films expected beyond Episode 7.

The six "Star Wars" feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion at the box office alone and offer "a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal," according to the Disney news release.

The deal is subject to federal antitrust approval.

No idea how this will work out, but one positive is that Lucas won't be involved with it much.

While it can be fun to hate on the new trilogy, Star Wars is still Star Wars. Without Lucas Disney could do a lot creatively and really take into account recent criticism. The possibility of them following the dark-reboot trend of recent superhero movies is enticing, and we know they'll be interested in the long term since they just bought the franchise. Either way I'll be there at midnight, lightsaber in hand, and if you judge me for that you can go suck a big one.

I'm not a Star Wars freak but my brother is a pretty big fan and I am a fan, but it is almost a shame to touch a classic series like this. However, with todays technology, it could be CRAZY and even more realistic than ever before if they do it right.

there are 3 more stories to film before they need to worry about a reboot.

As a huge star wars geek, I already know generally what the characters and storylines might be.

I thank my lucky stars Lucas is off this one. What a hack.

How do you know? Are you talking about the expanded universe stuff (haven't read any of it) or did he talk about what his plans were previously?

When he was younger George Lucas said that the story was all about Darth Vader..... The rise (new trilogy) the fall (original Star Wars) and his legacy. So I am assuming that is what will be the next series.

Disney in control of it... You can count on even more merchandise, as if it weren't already saturated enough.

I don't care about the merchandise, I'm just hoping they don't throw in more blatant attempts to appeal to kids (Ewoks, Jar Jar, that cartoon bullshit on TV).

I think it would make a lot of sense to utilize expanded universe characters.

I would have loved to have seen a movie about Han Solo and Chewie kicking ass across the stars as smugglers

How I feel about it with this shitty scene from the new trilogy:

You know all those movies are for kids, right?
