Get like 10 Tetra Neons just because of how badass they look.

I have one embedded in my wall connecting my living room to the kitchen in which I’ve only put exotic tropical fish in...

If you’re gonna go that route ?? I’d recommend the Peppermint Angelfish, Freshwater Polka Dot Stingray obviously, perhaps a Platinum Arowana, and maybe the @Nicky non licked starfish...

Start with freshwater tropical. That means heated but you don't have to worry about salt levels. Don't bother getting anything smaller than 25 gallons. The rule of thumb I didn't know is that the smaller the tank, the more maintenance on the tank. We bought my eldest a 20 gallon tank for his Christmas present a few years ago and I had to spend time every week on maintenance.

Start with cheap fish because you will screw up at first and they won't live very long. Mollys and platys have a life expectancy of one year. Once you can keep a few of the cheap fish alive for almost that amount of time, you can make a step up.

If you want to add real plants, do your homework before you set anything up. Once you establish the bed of the tank, it's hard to go back and change anything.

Yes, it's a total nerd hobby. At the same time toddlers LOVE taking care of fish. It keeps both my boys occupied. They have also learned a lot about life and death of pets, which softened the blow for when the family cats were euthenized.

Nothing like a gift that the kid will lose interest in in less than a week that you'll have to clean and take care of for years. :chuckle:

It's like getting the kid a dog without any of the fun that comes with owning a dog.

He has dogs. He loves fish.

He’ll love this thing. The only question is how much of a pain in the ass it will be for us.

Piranhas. Then bob for apples in it on Halloween.

Buy little plastic ones. If he's like his dad, he probably won't notice the difference anyway.

Damn that's awesome, my little brother loves fish and now my mom does the upkeep on his fish tank now that he's away at college.

You will have to clean it regularly.

How much of a pain in the ass is cleaning?
They have vacuums that you can use to comb through the rocks to get all the shit that sticks to it. You have to change half the water every 2-3 weeks or so.

This sounds like a pretty big pain in the ass.
