Kareem Hunt: One Pissed Off Runner!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's DV and assault now; back in the 80s the big Browns issue was drugs. In the early 80s Sam Rutigliano set up the "Inner Circle" -- EIGHT players who had pretty severe drug habits.

In 1989 Kevin Mack was arrested with Cocaine and convicted. NFL suspended him 3 games. Browns season ticket holder Judge McMonagle sentenced Kevin to six months in early October. He was given shock probation 30 days later and eventually was the decisive factor in the win over the Oilers to get us in the playoffs.

The NFL and other sports leagues eventually reduced the drug problem through testing.

I think it's going to take a few years until the NFL & the NFLPA sort DV and violence against women out as well. I agree that the criminal and civil courts should have primary responsibility, but signing this guy after seeing the video -- while likely a good football decision -- is not an occasion for unalloyed joy. I'm all for rehabilitation and the opportunity for redemption -- AFTER the wheels of justice have turned and after seeing some genuine remorse.

Quite apart from the actual incidents it appears Kareem lied to the team. That also has to be a major concern for the Browns.

Having said all that, Dorsey proved that he can be ruthless when necessary (cut Josh Gordon loose) so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on this.

I DO NOT want to become the Bengals.

Anyone who EXPECTS a sports franchise to willingly take the moral high ground in regards to a high profile player's infractions and crimes is closing their own eyes to the money that drives that sport.

Be it performance enhancing drugs or signing individuals with questionable histories, the team is doing it for wins. Wins bring more money. Every professional team in every sport will look the other way to different degrees to get more wins. It's the way it is.

If you don't like it, but STILL follow that team or sport, then it is on you.

Why?

That's what it comes down to, and I don't think any answer quite justifies it..

The Browns had positive momentum building between the end of the season, Baker, the hiring of Freddie and limitless options headed into the off-season..

We had rid ourselves of the Manziel and Gordon drama news cycle...

The RB position has largely become devalued and for this team, is already a position of strength... An undrafted rookie RB just made a Pro-Bowl, the position is not hard to find and replace...

Hunt may miss most, if not all, of next season...

With looking through the lens of what has been laid out along with the background of the crimes and, well deserved, increased scrutiny on domestic violence, this simply does not make sense and is an unnecessary risk..

Some things should just be left alone and left for other teams to deal with, this was one of them..

This will be an unnecessary cloud and headline that will continue to follow the Browns, and one can only hope they cut him before he gets a chance...

Ok, the other two incidents are bar fights. One was a fight his teammate started, not him, but he was involved after the fight started, this was before the shoving of the girl, then one in June after the shoving at Put-In-Bay which was another bar fight, this one I cant find any details.

All 3 involve alcohol though, so thus the alcohol counseling. Only 1 involves a female.

I am not sure about what everyone has said yet, but it sounds like Hunt is an alcoholic from all of the incidents, but that sometimes happens and he has time to fix this issue. Dorsey if I remember correctly also drafted him so this is Hunt’s second chance to be honest. He has to stay clean of alcohol and if he does it’s possible he could correct a lot of the issues. I will watch some interviews of him to see if I can catch his character from them.

I don’t drink alcohol cause it changes my personality so I stay away from drinking it since I know the night won’t end well if I do. I think this could be an issue for him as well.

But not all teams have the same rules. Some teams (Bengals) are much more willing to sign bad actors than others.

And I don't think it's mostly about the money. NFL teams make a fortune even if they stink. The real issue is the competitive desire to win. It's why the NY Giants were never going to get rid of Lawrence Taylor no matter how much dope he consumed. A sixth-round draft pick, on the other hand, is gone.

That's why the abrupt waiving of Kareem Hunt was somewhat surprising. He's a tremendous player and it hurts the Chiefs to lose him. Evidently the owner / front office decided they had to get rid of him. I respect them for doing that -- it couldn't have been an easy decision.

Dorsey did draft the kid and talent outweighs anything else. Now it’s a low risk deal money wise, so if he cleans up the act (likely will have to be alcohol free and have limited abilities to go places off the field), he still is young enough to truly clean up his act. Now if he has another incident, will he be cut? Yeah I don’t doubt he will be, but this is a goodwill statement from Dorsey and the Browns. If he fails here then he is out of the NFL.

You have to give people another chance at times and the Browns are hoping this signing can benefit all parties at the end of the day. We shall see when the suspension and ruling comes from the NFL but it’s likely to be a 4-6 game suspension with him going through alcohol program and doing community service etc.

Browns have already had a better off season than the Indians

As far as second chances etc, it's basically never going to be an immediate and complete clean up of behavior. Getting into trouble is only one part of the process of completely rehabilitating someone. They still have harmful influences and a lifetime of experience and mental coding to rework.

I’m not going to sit here in my Jim Brown jersey and pretend moral outrage over Hunt’s actions. I’m tired of being lovable losers and am willing to be the bad guys if it means wins. I’ll decide if this signing was shrewd or stupid based on what the team is or is not doing next January. I also realize some people will find that attitude reprehensible and I don’t necessarily disagree.

Well good thing he's coming back home where he'll be around all of his friends and family that raised him to be such an upstanding human being.....

Nobody knows the relationship Hunt and Dorsey have. Nobody knows how his contract is structured and I am willing to bet a guy like Dorsey is going to make him earn that paycheck, on the field and off the field.

Dorsey has proven he has no issue getting rid of troubled star players.

I know what he did was wrong but there’s a lot of baseless speculation running rampant in this thread.

I'm not excited about Hunt being brought in here honestly, but you can't ban him from football.

People have done far worse and gotten far more lenient sentences than what Hunt has already gotten/going to get.

If you ban Hunt, then you need to ban Tyreke Hill, Joe Mixon, Terrell Suggs, Adrian Peterson, Big Rape, and probably others I'm forgetting about. Whether they all actually deserve to be banned is a different discussion, but you can't ban Hunt if Joe fuckin' Mixon is still allowed to be playing football.

This is my stance. I dislike that our franchise is so willing to ignore character issues, but I hope he plays well because I'm a Browns fan and want the team to win.

But hey, if he never has another issue, I'll be happy to support him. Just gotta hope they cut his ass if this behavior pops up again.

You guys know this is Kareem Hunt and not Tyreek Hill, right? Because Kareem Hunt never returned a single kick or punt with the Chiefs. Just want to make sure everyone knows who this is :chuckle:

About the only thing they've got in common is that they've hit a woman.

If Hunt was smart, he'd go out of his way to help out battered women causes and the like, and make sure he's photographed a lot while doing it. Image is a lot these days.

Look, I get that Hunt hit a girl. I don't think he was right to hit a girl.

But this was not domestic violence. He should be donating his money and time to AA, because it seems clear his issue is that he gets drunk and then gets into arguments that escalate into fights.

Hunt's problem is that he's an asshole drunk, not that he's a wife-beater.

Exactly, best post here on the topic.

It is going tio be frustrating to have to hold my nose rooting for the team this season, just when we had gotten so much goodwill.

Anyone who EXPECTS a sports franchise to willingly take the moral high ground in regards to a high profile player's infractions and crimes is closing their own eyes to the money that drives that sport.

Browns had, for the most part, done pretty well for a number of years on that front - other than Johnny and to some degree Carlos Hyde - basically going back to once Abe Elam was gone.

Just frustrating that we have to stoop to the level of the teams that have employed, and continued to stick with, Roethlisberger, Rashard Mendenhall [yes, his Osama comments are on this level IMHO] and Ray Lewis...

I didn't want the guy.

However, I have no choice in the matter now do I?

As a player? His accolades are about as good as they could possibly come for a runningback. 2017 All-Pro, PPFWA ROY, NFL Rushing leader in 2017. In the 11 games he played? 824 yards..meaning he perhaps rushes for 1,198 yards with a full season under his belt. Would make him the 4th leading rusher only behind Gurley, Barkley, and Zeke.

Can catch passes out of the backfield, and would give us a rather incredible attack when teamed up with Chubb, Johnson.

Just character wise? I'm not a fan. Especially in the "metoo" era and especially considering the fact this is a rather young team that is just now starting to claw it's way out of being bad.

This is a gamble.
