Why is Cleveland sports talk radio so bad?

I work in an office. It's a difficult job made much, much worse by the economic situation and the ever-present threat of layoffs.

Fortunately I can wear headphones while I work, so I used to listen regularly to WKNR. It was my link to the outside world; my way to reach out to something fun.

I listened to the Really Big Show, Rome, Munch, everything up to 5:00 pm, when I could go home. Sometimes I listened to WKNR on the way home.

It eventually got to be too much. Listening to the Really Big Show I got the impression the station had reached back to 1970 and my 8th grade study hall and plucked a bunch of guys out of their seats and given them a radio show.

The stupid 'comedy routines' that are funny the first time, the 10th time, maybe the 43rd time--but not the 5,000th time. The endless jabber about parking tickets, 'hot chicks,' and countless other things that have nothing to do with sports.

'We've got SOOOO MUCH to get to today,' but they never actually got to any of it.

The callers who wait for 30 minutes or an hour to have their say about their favorite sports teams, only to get on the air and have the host insult them and hang up on them after 10 seconds because he or his co-host disagrees with their opinion, or just for the fun of hanging up on them, etc.

I stopped listening when they started playing this McDonalds fish sandwich commercial, over and over and over and over. Goldhammer was actually hanging up on people because they started talking about the Indians, the Cavs and the Browns instead of the sandwich commercial.

Are these people actually getting paid to do this?

We in Cleveland have several compelling sports stories going on, year round. Why don't our radio 'personalities' want to talk about them? Maybe because they are too busy trying to be 'personalities.'

I used to listen to Munch, and it was like eating air.

Do you have to be a speedfreak or a self-absorbed 13 year old to get a radio show in Cleveland? Listening to WKNR, one would think so.

I stopped listening to WKNR, bought an MP3 player, and started to listen to British soccer podcasts.

Last week, with the Browns in a state of meltdown, the Indians lookng for a new manager, Ohio State in disarray and the Cavs making a serious effort to win it all this season, I began listening once again.

Thankfully, Munch is gone. But Reghai is almost as bad. Pompous, self-absorbed, endlessly repeating and repeating and repeating the same rants while telling callers who are actually making intelligent comments 'I gotta fly!' His motto should be, 'Bring it STRONG, so I can hang up on ya!'

The Really Big Show is the same. Cleveland sports is full of upheaval , rumors and, in the case of the Cavs, hope. What do they talk about? Chicks, blue jeans, parking tickets. Rizzo blusters and repeats himself and cuts people off and then [again] repeats the same rant he already repeated 50 times in the last hour.

As for Rome: he does great interviews, but the 'routines' and 'takes' are boring. WKNR should drop the show. Even Mike and Mike is more informative.

I couldn't agree more with you.

Radio, in general, has suffered since Howard Stern went to satellite. Stern haters may disagree with me, but so be it. Howard raised the bar for eveyone across the board. When Howard left, the corporate cookie-cutter stations claimed their victory by sucking every ounce of creativity they could from the medium. Sad, IMHO.

I like Rome, but only in bunches. Local sports talk radio is insufferable to me. I listen to 1100 all the time, mostly because I like to hear news and current events (which I cannot tolerate on TV stations anymore - all corporate shills for the most part). They at least have actual beat reporters that have insider knowledge, and I like to listen to this. 850 sucks from top to bottom - I can't listen to the local programming at all. It all sounds like this to me:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ws58s9wzYsA&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ws58s9wzYsA&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Even more a reason to catch "Around The Rim" ;) We won't talk about blue jeans, parking tickets etc. of course only if you want to! We don't have corporate suits sitting in a huge office pulling the strings! Our show will be run by the fans!

Ha-ha, nice segway! Now I have to check it out. :)

Buy a Sirius subscription and listen to Howard. It's the greatest show ever and well worth the $12.99/month or whatever it is. Even when he's on vacation, the music channels are great and the sports radio is at least passable, albeit with a NY/Bos/LA bias like all national sports talk. I've had Sirius for 4 years and am lost when I find myself traveling for work and having to rent a car that doesn't have satellite radio. Will not/can not ever go back to "terrestrial" radio. I've yet to hear anyone say a bad thing about satellite radio (ask Jigo, Damage, CCF, etc).

Yeah, I love my XM. Much better than trying to listen to Reghi and Rhoda on my way home. Even if there not talking about Cleveland sports, at least it's bearable sports talk. Anytime something big is happening in town (mostly trades) I'll flip it to KNR and it's just terrible. The city does deserve better.

I wish I had something to listen to at work, on my little Walkman. Sirius is not the answer, especially since you have to pay for it. Our healthcare insurance costs for our household just went up by $200 a month. I'm trying to keep month outlays under control, since I'm deeply afraid of being laid off at any moment.

I don't like Howard Stern anyway. When he was on 'free' radio years ago I listened for a time, but it just seemed pointless. I listened to Gary Dee back inthe day, so to me, guys like Stern are just boring.

And 1100--forget it. I absolutely detest Limbaugh and therefore avoid that station. On rare occasions I listen to them when they broadcast Indians games. Don't they also do Cavs games?

I sometimes listen to college radio at work, but oftentimes I can't get WCSB's signal. Sometimes I listen to classic rock 90-whatever, but I can only take so much Pink Floyd and Skynyrd.

I'm a fan of Cleveland sports teams and the great tradition that comes with them, and I really wish WKNR had some competition. I seem to recall an AM station out in Akron that did sports talk, but that was last year and I can't get their signal in my current cubicle.

I want to hear semi-intelligent sports talk. I'm really tired of the "call us so we can scream at you and hang up" game our local sports talk people play. The economy here is in bad shape, and I'm sure some callers are unemployed people for whom Cleveland sports teams are one of the few bright lights. I'm surprised that Rizzo is such a no-substance braying donkey, because he's almost my age and therefore old enough to have a sense of Cleveland sports history.

When I was a child, my family lived and breathed Browns football. Sunday afternoon was the high point of the week, win or lose. We'd get together and watch the game and eat dinner. Our whole neighborhood was like this.

One of the podcasts I listen to is the British soccer show "5 Live World Football Phone-in," which is broadcast by BBC radio. The hosts are funny and playful without being stupid or insulting, and the callers display a great depth of knowledge about their teams and the sport in general. Unfortunately it's only a weekly show.

We have so many great, great sports stories going on in Cleveland. I wish I could understand why our sports talk radio people are so incredibly bad.

4th year into my Sirius/XM subscription and it was worth every dime.
Sirius NFL Radio
Howard Stern
Hardcore sports
The Foxxhole
Hip-Hop Nation

One of these stations is always on at my crib.

sirius radio is bunk unless you're a Howard fan, it's nothing but uncommercialed radio that plays the same cycled songs as regular radio

the reason for RBS being crap = Aaron Goldhammer

No...there are over a hundred stations and 10+ dedicated to playing new music that your typical shit top 40 stations won't play for months.

You do bring up a good point about commercials...there are none of them, so you get 58 minutes of music an hour as opposed to 30-40 from your typical station.

Your post is "bunk". But your new avy is way better than Kemp's mugshot, so I'll rep you anyways.

The Answer: Cause I don't have my own show...

Does ANYONE know what happened to Josh Sabo on The Really Big Show?
