Borderlands 2′s revamped weapons and AI detailed

Gearbox has already made it clear it’s overhauled enemy AI and weapons for Borderlands 2, but now we’ve learned more precisely how.

“There are a lot more guns this time, like, several orders of magnitude more,” art director Jeramy Cooke told Kotaku.

“Our core gun system that we had last time we revamped the base code system for that to make it more efficient so that we could add more parts. So, in the past game we might’ve only had like five or six parts for a gun, now there can be more like twelve, fourteen parts in a gun.”

Gearbox has also made an effort to ensure the many variations of parts are as visually distinct as statistically.

“We paramaterized the scope views as well – before, it was all static art, so you might’ve only seen one of six scopes, but now you’re going to see eighty-seven bazillion scopes, because they’re all paramaterized. Guns dropped by bosses are going to have much more personality,” Cooke said.

The art director also nixed any plans you might have for relying on the somewhat less than clever AI seen in the first Borderlands.

“We saw people in the first game exploiting the AI, hiding around a building, getting the AI stuck and stuff like that,” he observed.

“So now AI can completely navigate where players can navigate. They can jump from rooftop to rooftop, climb ladders, they can kick barrels down stairs. They have a much better sense of what’s going on in the world.

“There’s a whole new layer of communication, there’s a whole new layer of states – we have wounded states, all these awesome buff states where guys hulk out. The AI is totally new from the original game.”

Borderlands 2 is expected in 2012, on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Borderlands 2: Guardian Angel to return, Lilith model chosen

Story by Johnny Cullen

G4′s posted a video showing the brand new live-action model for Lilith in Borderlands 2. She’s Australian model Yasemin Arslan, who beat more than a thousand other women to the role after open auditions in Texas by Gearbox. There’s more on her transformation, along with a small interview with studio boss Randy Pitchford below the break. The video also confirms that the Guardian Angel from the first Borderlands will return.

Borderlands 2 releases this year for PS3, 360 and PC.

This is kinda crazy because the controls would be hard to use I think but cool at the same time

Report: Borderlands 2 to launch on Tegra 3-powered Android devices

Gearbox has apparently announced and shown Borderlands 2 for certain Android tablets using Tegra-3 chipsets, according to a report from AndroidandMe (via Pocket Gamer). This was in made in light of an anticipated showing of the upcoming Kepler GPU from NVIDIA.

According to the site, 2K’s plotting a summer release of the game for PS3, 360 and PC, although its actually yet to announce a date besides just 2012. Thanks, StolenGlory

So, is this the game where they said there were millions of different weapons or attatchments or something like that? I might be interested in picking the GOTY edition up with all 4 expansions if someone can give me some bullet points about this game.

Think Fallout 3 more humorous with gear like Diablo 2. Yes it was something like a million different weapons *stats/specs etc* were in the game. Well worth buying.

Borderlands 2 dated for September, new trailer here
Wed, Feb 22, 2012 | 13:12 GMT
Story by Patrick Garratt

Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 2 will release on September 18 in the US and on September 21 elsewhere.

Borderlands 2 will release for PC, 360 and PS3 on September 18 in the US and internationally on September 21, 2K said today.

The publisher has also confirmed that fans who pre-order the title from participating retailers will receive access to the Borderlands 2 Premiere Club, including rewarding in-game items and bonuses.

The RPG-shooter sequel will be “bigger, better and more badass,” apparently with new characters, new skills, new environments, new weapons and new loot. All the news.

The story revolves around players again shooting their way through Pandora “to take down the notorious Handsome Jack and his corrupt Hyperion Corporation”. Again, the main pull is four-way co-op.

Split-screen and drop-in-drop-out online play will be included.

Pre-ordering will give access to the Gearbox Gun Pack, a Golden Key and the Vault Hunter’s Relic.

“The Gearbox Gun Pack is a collection of unique guns to help players begin their journey on Pandora,” said a rep.

“The Golden Key is an in-game item used to unlock a rare item in the mysterious Golden Sanctuary Loot Chest found in Borderlands 2. The Vault Hunter’s Relic is an in-game item that boosts players’ gear-hunting fortune while playing solo or teaming up with friends.”

There you go. 96.5% more wub wub.

Looks like the GUI got a pretty serious overhaul (@ 1:15 of the trailer). Probably my biggest complaint about the first one.

Borderlands 2 to be less picky about which weapon you use
Story by Brenna Hillier Thu, Feb 23, 2012 | 23:19 GMT

In the sequel to Borderlands, Gearbox wants players to be better placed to take advantage of the staggering variety of weaponry at their disposal.

This time around we want players to really explore our new guns, which have a staggering amount of variety,” creative director Paul Hellquist told IGN.

“We want the player to have the fun RPG experience of determining, you know, the min/max area of the best weapons for this class with this build are these types, whether it’s this brand of pistols or this brand of assault rifles or whatever. We really want that to be something that players explore instead of sort of saying ‘hey, go use the assault rifles all the time.’”

Art director Jeramy Cooke said the first Borderlands was too restrictive in that regard.

“We sort of backpedalled on that from the first game. We found that people really just wanted to be able to use the weapons they wanted to use,” he said.

“We tried to be a little less like ‘you really want to use this type of gun,’ because inevitably someone would just take Brick and go get a sniper rifle and they just wanted to play that way. So we’ve opened the skill trees up a lot more so that people can access weapons that they want.

“Now there may be weapons that just harmonize better with certain skills but we’re not really kind of forcing that whereas like, you know, here’s a buff to this very specific class of weapon. We typically don’t do a lot of that.”

The discussion came as part of a wider feature detailing the Siren class, which has undergone reinvention since the first game.

Borderlands 2 is expected on September 18, on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Thanks, Gamespy.

The Commando is a “more badass” version of the Solider in Borderlands 2
Stephany Nunneley Fri, Feb 24, 2012 | 19:59 GMT

IGN has gotten some hands on time with the Commando in Borderlands 2 and according to the site, the character will be able to make the turret a much more “modifiable, important part of a battle” as he can ” a turret to the ground to help out in a fight.”

“We wanted to do a class that was similar to the Soldier but we felt like we wanted to level him up and make him even more badass than the original Soldier, so we created the Commando,” said Jeramy Cooke, the game’s art director.

“He’s our special forces type of character. He actually has a little bit of story. I don’t want to kind of get into too many of the details, maybe one interesting thing is he wears the dog tag from his wife who was also in the military and she’s now dead.”

According to Cooke, the Soldier was one of the most popular classes in Borderlands 1, and if a player decides to go with the Commando, it will feel familiar.

“We did want it to feel comfortable for people that enjoyed that play style,” he said. “If you were to make an analogy to Dungeons and Dragons, the Commando is like our fighter, you know? The game just really fundamentally needs and wants, our universe needs and wants these guys to exist. It’s a really fun play style…you’re using your action skill in very different context.

Sounds like an interesting choice, but we;ll probably go with the Gunzerker, personally. Or the Siren. We can’t decide.

Borderlands 2 is expected on September 18, on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

The soldier was my favorite in B1 so I'll definitely be using the Commando. The turret was the best power out of them all.
