2012 NFL Free Agency Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Meh, I've seen him be right about some stuff before, but never about anything related to Cleveland sports. It's mostly NYC sports where he seems to have info.

According to him we were the overwhelming favorite for Ray Edwards and close to an agreement with him. But, in reality, we never even contacted him.

Ya you are 100% correct on that.

Some guys I think we'll at least take a look at. I'm going to leave the QB's out because everyone knows the options in both FA and the draft.

RB - Hillis, Steve Slaton, Mike Tolbert, Michael Bush, Ryan Grant

WR - Colston (yes, I think we'll take a look; no, I don't think it'll be a serious look), Garcon, Meachum, Josh Morgan, Doucett

TE - I've seen us linked an awful lot with John Carlson. It makes sense as Holmgren drafted him, but we'd have to be planning something with one of the 4 TE's we already have on the team.

OL - I would love to get Anthony Collins and plug him into the RT position. He's young and has fared pretty well when given opportunities to start for the Bungles. Plus, he would most likely be a pretty cheap option and would allow us to address another position in the draft.

DB - I hope they look to bring Patterson and Adams back on some cheap team-friendly contracts. Neither is great, but both give some very solid depth and I thought Patterson played well as the nickel back last year. I also wouldn't mind taking a look at Richard Marshall and Terrell Thomas.

LB - Not sure. I've seen the David Hawthorne thing from several message board posters, but we'll have to wait and see. I feel pretty good about the position if Fujita is healthy, but we need to find his long term replacement soon. There are some decent options in the draft though (Brown, David, Manning.)

DL - Obviously, we need a DE. There are a few decent options in the draft (Mercilus, Branch, Ingram, etc.) And the FA class is pretty weak here. I'd love Mario Williams more than any other FA at any position, but it ain't happening. So, maybe Jeremy Mincey from Jacksonville or Jason Jones from Tennessee.

So, I guess I'd like to see something like:

RB - Hillis
WR - Meachum and maybe Amendola; Amendola was just tendered at the 2nd round level, but I just think Shurmur really likes him. I've seen him linked with us a bunch. I wouldn't give up a 2nd rounder, but I'm sure the Rams would take a little less.
OT - Anthony Collins
DE - Mincey

Then you could address another RB, WR, OL, DE, CB, S in the draft.

Take it for what its worth....

I guess this is the best place for this:

3. Wide receiver: Cleveland has one of the worst wide receiver groups in the NFL, and desperately needs a No. 1 target. The Browns were tied for the most drops in the NFL last season, and made only six catches of more than 40 yards, which tied for fourth-fewest in the league. Some have linked Cleveland to the Giants' Mario Manningham, but the better fit is the Colts' Pierre Garcon. He gives the Browns what they need the most at that position -- speed. Garcon finished with four catches of 40 yards or more, and three of his touchdown catches were longer than 40 yards. He did this without Manning throwing the ball to him. The Browns aren't expected to go after big-name receivers like Vincent Jackson or Marques Colston. After Garcon, Manningham and Robert Meachem, the next level of wide receivers include the Cowboys' Laurent Robinson, the Cardinals' Early Doucet and former Browns first-round pick Braylon Edwards.

honestly if i was washington, i would trade out of the two spot immediately. im not saying that because i want RG3 (I do, but thats besides the point). They are absolutely FUCKED without any picks. they have no way to sign any free agents now. dan snyder got what he deserved for being such a dip shit about this.

They can't, and won't, trade out of that spot. They wouldn't be able to get back what they've already given up. The smartest thing to do would be to eat the entire penalty this year, bench RGIII for a year, and deal with being the worst team in the NFL. Basically, take a year off, and go into next year ready to make a big splash in free agency. Of course, the fan base would hate it, and Shanahan would lose his job, so they aren't going to do that.

Because Dan Snyder is the owner, I expect them to spend their full cap this year, and being handcuffed next year by the massive penalty they would be putting off. They might manage a 7-9 or 8-8 season this year, but then they'll have to cut most of their big contracts, and let all of their RFAs and FAs leave next season.

Its possible that RG3 might want to pull an Eli a tell the Redskins he doesn't want to play for them. How are they planning on surrounding him with talent without cap space or picks? Snyder better hit on the few picks he has left if they continue forward.

The trade isn't official yet, right? Couldn't they just cancel the trade if they wanted?

Well, I suppose that is definitely true...

I'd still put it at around a .00001% chance of happening. The trade was agreed to, and I don't think St. Louis would take it well if Washington backed out. I'm also not sure if there would be a penalty for doing so. Besides, Snyder isn't the type of person to make logical decisions.

He doesn't seem like the kind of kid who would do that. Let's just face it and move on, RG3 is a Redskin.

i agree, he seems like the kind of kid that will do the best with the hand he is dealt, but i was just saying that if the redskins were smart (which they aren't), they would get out of this deal immediately. their plan was obviously to get RG3 then build through free agency, but they cant build through free agency anymore.

Talm i agree with everything you're saying. the redskins have really been backed into the corner with this.

i just think that if heckert + holmgren were smart, they call up the redskins and say "look, we know you guys are screwed, we aren't going to let you fleece us like you got fleeced by the rams, but we will give you an out... 4, 22, and next years second for the 2."

if you're the redskins, thats hard to pass up. you basically save face avoid the issue of having to build through free agency without any cap space.

I'm so excited Pashos is gone. I know some people think his weaknesses are played up, but I haven't been this happy about any Browns-related news in years. Allow me this moment to celebrate.
