Ohio Bobcats Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let's not turn this into a bash OU thread.

OU has a solid team. They would be extremely competitive against a majority of AQ teams. And that is quite an accomplishment considering the "talent" disparity between AQ teams and mid-majors. Unfortunately the schedule didn't pan out for them to showcase their talent to the fullest.

And that isn't OU's fault. Not many high profile programs want to play against teams like OU or UC. It's a lose-lose for them. High profile programs want to schedule shlubs they know they can beat instead of lesser opponents that will put up a solid fight.

Regardless of schedule... being undefeated is a tremendous accomplishment. And every OU alumn should be proud whether that results in a BCS game or not.

I didn't see anyone bash OU. There's no denying they have a solid team this year, unfortunately for them their schedule is incredibly weak.

Was not meaning to bash OU in any way. Schedules are made years in advance, and sorry, but no high profile programs are running from them. PSU was a high profile program when this game was scheduled. OU has a solid team, and solid MAC program. They are nowhere near the level yearly as UC year in and year out, though.

To be honest UC has only been consistent for the last decade... probably last half decade at a high level.

While the Big East isn't a powerhouse by any means... we do have teams that are competitive every year. UC has been trying to expand it's OOC schedule recently. This year was very exciting for us. We had VT and OSU as OOC partners.

Unfortunately for us, TCU joining the Big East forced us to drop OSU to pick up TCU. That's how UCF ended up on OSU's schedule, as they were playing TCU that year. Unfortunately TCU went to the Big 12 and we were forced to pick up another FCS team.

OOC partners are hard to come by (at least for UC). The program thinks we are good enough for a home/away series... however a lot of other higher profile teams only want to play a home date and not play away at UC. Which is understandable with revenue and all.

Oh well. Hopefully ND moving to the ACC will trigger the last wave of realignment. I just hope UC ends up in the Big 12 as good road partners for WVU and Louisville. It's a long shot... but I think we've come to far to move back down to CUSA.

Yeah no way to I see UC moving down in conference realignment.

That's nice in theory, but that schedule is an absolute joke. Frankly it would be embarrassing if they didn't run the table. No, it shouldn't earn them a BCS game.

Any more of a joke schedule than Boise or Rutgers had that one year?

To be fair, how was Ohio supposed to know Sandusky would do what he did? It's not like they agreed upon a game after that occurred.

Yahoo called Ohio the new Boise State.

Big win last night for the Bobcats. Wasn't pretty, but they made some plays at the end to win a game in which they didn't play particularly well. Forced two turnovers in the final six minutes, the first of which set-up the game winning FG and the second sealed the win when the Bobcats picked off a pass on about their own 20 with Marshall driving and just :30 left in the game. Midway through the 4th, Tettleton also threw a 27 yard td pass on 4th and 5 from the Marshall 27. Put the ball right on the money. Big time play people.

Marshall was better than I expected. I believe their QB Cato is only a Sophomore, so it's going to be a serious battle once again in Athens next year.

Easy. They pretty much man handled Arkansas. ;)

Upstart UMass gave them all they could handle, but Beau Blankenship is a very legit RB, rushing for 260 yds and 2 TDs. First 5-0 start since 1968. All is good in Athens.

The good news is I don't think Solich will be thinking that's the case at all this week. The defense is REALLY going to have to tighten up. They were getting picked apart by a UMASS team that had scored just 35 points in four games coming into this one.

Defense really has to step it up from here on out.

Yeah, the defense didn't look good. However, my biggest concern is whether or not Tettleton is actually healthy. He didn't look very comfortable a few times when he had to scramble and move outside the pocket last week, and he flat out took a couple dives before even trying to run. They were always going to try and tone his running down a bit this season, but his threat to run is what makes those option plays work and also makes him even more dangerous as a passer because the D has to respect his legs. Hopefully he's ok, because we can pretty much kiss any shot of a MAC title and an undefeated season goodbye if he can't make it through the year.

Some basketball news among all the football talk:

On Tuesday, the Bobcats got a commit for the 2013 class

Walnut Hills senior 6-foot-5 shooting guard/small forward DJ Wingfield has verbally committed to Ohio University, according to Walnut Hills basketball coach Ricardo Hill. Wingfield, the son of former NBA player and UC standout Dontonio Wingfield, was The Enquirer Division IV player of the year at Lockland last season. Hill said Wingfield had been leaning toward OU and said the situation was comfortable for him. Hill said there had been talk that if Wingfield waited he could go high major next spring. “They (OU) definitely got a steal with him,” Hill said. “I really think he is one of the top guards in the state.”

He averaged 17.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists as a junior. He had over 20 offers, Hill said.

Rivals and Scout both listed Wingfield as a 3* prospect and saw him as a potential high major player.

This past weekend, the Bobcats also had in Jaylon Tate for an official visit. A 6'2", 190 lb PG from Chicago Simeon, he's current teammates of 2013 #1 prospect Jabari Parker and Illini commit Dedrick Nunn. Various reports have stated that he already holds offers from Northwestern, Providence, Missouri, Xavier, Providence, Illinois, DePaul, Butler and Missouri State, though there is some question to the validity of all the offers. Tate's visiting Illinois this weekend, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. Either way, it's great to see these types of players making their way onto to campus for official visits. Even if we don't land Tate, we'll get one of these guys eventually.

Also, already committed to the 2013 class is PF Antonio Campbell from Holy Cross (Covington, KY) High School. The 6-8, 225-pounder had offers from basically every MAC school along with a few others and was also getting looks from Butler, Dayton, Minnesota, WVU, Wake Forest, and Xavier among others.

Holy Cross senior center Antonio Campbell has verbally committed to Ohio University

Holy Cross senior center Antonio Campbell has verbally committed to play basketball at Ohio University, according to Holy Cross coach Erik Goetz.

“(He) really felt comfortable with (the) staff and his opportunity to flourish in their system,” Goetz wrote in a text message.

Campbell, who is 6 feet 9, also had offers from Illinois State, Jacksonville, NKU, Southern Illinois, Winthrop, Kent State, Bowling Green, Elon, Stetson, Tennessee at Chattanooga, Tennessee at Martin and Wright State. He also had interest from Butler, Xavier and West Virginia.

Campbell, an Enquirer Northern Kentucky all-area selection this past season, averaged 17.3 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks last season.

This class could be pretty stellar if Tate commits. It's already looking pretty damn good and we still have two schollies left to fill. A hot start to this season and knocking off Memphis or Oklahoma would be huge for this new staff. Can't wait for the season to start.

Rutgers has never been to a BCS game. Hell they have never won the big east. Not even a share of the Big East.
