CBS News: 27 Dead, Including 14 Children, In Elementary School Shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut/AP) — CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 14 students, after a shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.

CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.

Two students and a teacher were also injured in the shooting and they were taken to Dansbury Hospital, spokeswoman Diane Burke told CBS News York.

Teachers and police escorted students out of the building following the shooting.

“It was a very orderly evacuation given the circumstances,” Connecticut Post reporter Brian Koonz told CBS New York.

One mother tells CBS 2 reporter Lou Young that it’s like a “war zone” in Newtown. Her child told Young he had bullets “whizzing by” him in the hallway and that a teacher pulled him into a classroom.

Connecticut State Police tell CBS Connecticut that it is “still an active situation.”

Police responded to the school shooting at 9:41 a.m. WFSB-TV reporter Len Besthoff calls it a “chaotic scene.”

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.

“It’s alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America,” he said.

The school superintendent’s office says the district has locked down schools as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. Schools in neighboring towns also were locked down as a precaution.

State police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance says they have a number of personnel on the scene to assist.

The White House said President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting.

This shooting rivals the massacres at Virginia Tech in 2007 where 32 people were killed and at Columbine High School in 1999 where 13 were gunned down.

I read that at least 18 children are dead. This is beyond horrific.

Horrible. Pathetic human being. I feel deeply sorry for those affected.

Moral: You cannot quickly render someone using weapons ineffective unless using weapons to combat.....start arming yourself, or take a police officer with you.....or do nothing. Or, continue to wish that guns be banned.....you'll be wishing far too long.

I just, I can't. Why would someone do this? This world is becoming hell.

I have nothing to say, this is unspeakable. Tragic, and sad.

I'm not advocating taking away guns, there just needs to be more control and mental evaluations.

Oh my god.

What will be done? Nothing? Something? Will we ever have to turn our permits in? Criminals will still get their hands on a gun or guns for that matter. Too much of this shit going on, the only safe place nowadays is the Whitehouse.

One report saying the first shooter was 24, who walked in with a Kevlar vest and four weapons.

At an elementary school.

In America.

Really hope one day these tragedies will put into perspective the path our society is taking.

This is just beyond ridiculous. Absolutely disgusting. I'm awaiting all the gun control talking points being brought up, but probably no one saying a thing about mental health. Just horrible to have to read about.

Yeah, this literally makes me feel physically ill too. I cannot imagine a worse crime.

Why people like this just can't put a bullet in their own brains when thoughts like this even START to creep into their minds, I will never know. There is no worse garbage on the planet than somebody who would do this. I feel awful that he's dead, because it just means that he can't spend the rest of his life in prison being punished in all kinds of ways for what he did.

And BigMar is right. It's situations like these where I wish more good people were armed.

Media assholes interviewing kids asking if there were kids crying and screaming for their parents.

That seems morally acceptable.

As for gun control, it's far to easy to get a gun in the US. Obviously it should be harder.

Good points guys and for sure the real source of the issue. But what the hell can you do with people like this? You'd literally have to start locking people up for life if you're suspicious that they're having these kinds of thoughts. And unfortunately (I guess) you just can't do that.

As for gun control and how difficult guns should be to get. I agree that they should be harder to get...for dangerous people. The mental evaluation, background check, etc are completely reasonable ideas to me.

Is it going to come down to the teachers taking shooting practice and having the guns somewhere in the classrooms?
At this point, it doesn't matter where your child is, where you are; people will flip, and shoot, just because they're having a hard time. All logic is gone.

2 shooters? I can't even comprehend this.
