Browns hire Ray Horton as DC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Damontre Moore is my top choice for this draft. Then Millner. Moore can play up or down.

Holy ....:

Wow. That's huge $$ for a DC. Banner will pay. RT @Kyndra620: Horton contract w/ Browns 4 yrs $8 mil-says he's ecstatic bout going 2 CLE

I'd be ecstatic too for that kind of cash as a DC :chuckles:

Love to see them shelling out the big bucks to get a top coaching staff in place. If only they'd do the same for our GM...

@Kyndra620

From the same Arizona reporter:

Just hours after Ray Horton was released from his contract with the Arizona Cardinals, he was hired by the Cleveland Browns as defensive coordinator.

Horton's contract is for four years and $8 million, according to Arizona Sports' Kyndra de St. Aubin.

It was expected the coach would find work quickly and initial speculation led to Cleveland.

While Bruce Arians was finishing up his introductory press conference as the Cardinals' next head coach, Horton to Cleveland was confirmed first by ESPN's Adam Schefter and then the team.

Horton told de St. Aubin he received a phone call Friday from the Browns to discuss the job with him. He had interviewed with the Browns for their head coaching position earlier in the month and felt it was a good interview.

Horton believes the Browns' defense has a ton of upside and is an extraordinary young team.

Cleveland is assembling a new staff, led by first-time head coach Rob Chudzinski. The Browns have also landed Michael Lombardi as the vice president of player personnel.

Horton is flying to Cleveland Friday night to meet with team officials.

Horton interviewed for the Cardinals' head coaching job, and has been the architect of their defense over the last two seasons. In 2012, Arizona ranked 12th in the league in total defense.

In Arizona he was the defensive coordinator for Ken Whisenhunt, who took a job as the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator on Thursday.

Horton said he got a phone call from Whisenhunt Thursday night, and his former boss thanked him for his time in Arizona and said maybe they would work together again in the future.

At that pay rate, I could see him passing on HC jobs if he doesn't see the right one.

Damn...2 million a year to run the defense. Wonder how much Norv got...

With that kind of money I'm thinking he's the assistant HC and would be a top candidate to take over if Chud was let go for some reason. Seems like they really liked him in his interview but they wanted an offensive guy. Honestly I was confused as to why they interviewed him at all (besides Rooney Rule) because they said on numerous occasions that they wanted an offensive coach.

Really happy with this hire though, almost makes me forget about Lombardi, almost.

We just went from a good GM and crappy coach to a bad GM and a great coaching staff. Meh, I'll take that over a good coach and bad GM transitioning to a bad coach and good GM

A quick little search for some names to possibly keep an eye on regarding filling out the defensive staff:

Matt Raich - Current LB Coach for Arizona, was with Horton in Pittsburgh from '04-'06 before they joined back up in Arizona for the past 2 seasons.

Louie Cioffi - Current DB Coach for Arizona, was also with Horton from '97-'01 in Cincy.

Ashley Ambrose - Current DB coach for Cal. Played for Horton in Cincy in '97-'98.

Mark Duffner - Current LB coach for Jacksonville. Coached with Horton in Cincy. Was their DC for a year while Horton was there.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they bring in a young, highly regarded, bright mind to take over the reigns if/when Horton gets a H.C gig while under contract.

Love this answer. This is why he'll be a head coach soon.

That kind of money sounds strange. I don't know how much Chud is making but surely it's more than Horton, that would be a little uncomfortable if not considering Horton was also interviewed to be the teams HC. With the rift that has developed between Banner and Lurie, Horton also being rumored to the Eagles and Browns like Kelly was, then Horton gets a huge deal for a DC. Kind of looks like a "one up you" type thing among powerful people. Also makes it very difficult for other teams to attempt to hire Horton as HC in the future.

The coaching staff seems to be beautifully tailored to grow.

So, we gonna have a press conference to introduce Norv and Ray?

great video watch thr last 10 minutes

Some good stuff in here...says 1st and 2nd downs are 3-4 downs mostly, and 3rd is more usually 4-3.

Great video, but my God is that interviewer annoying as shit.
