Given the chance, Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert might follow in the footsteps of his fellow Detroit entrepreneur, Michael Ilitch Sr.

Ilitch is founder and owner of Little Caesars Pizza. He also owns the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers. He was in negotiations to purchase the Detroit Pistons, as well, before he backed out of talks.

Rumors won’t go away that Gilbert is interested in buying the Indians. However, a well-placed source said the Tribe isn’t for sale.

The Dolan family purchased the Indians from the late Richard Jacobs for a reported $320 million in 1999. It’s unknown what the Indians would be worth today, but it would likely be in excess of $500 million

What a misleading thread title. Gilbert doesn't "want" to buy the Indians, and he has never given any indication so. This is just a persistent rumor spewed out by fans who are sick of the Dolans. This isn't even mentioning the fact that as long as Dan Gilbert owns a casino in his name, he isn't allowed to own a baseball team. He's not giving up ownership or control of that casino any time soon.

Re: Dan Gilbert wants to buy the Indians

I don't believe this. I just need someone to buy them, just to rename it "The Jake".

Sincerely doubt it ever happens.

Pray that he never does. He starts losing money on them, who knows what would happen with the Cavs. It's always been a horrible idea.

This pops up about once or twice a year. How about we start some new rumors?

I hear Drew Carey wants to buy the Indians. Pass it on.

Only if Gilbert in turn sells the Cavs so that they can rename it "The Gund."

I'll always call it the Jake so I'm not disagreeing,

But I've always found it interesting that Jacobs convinced the city to build a stadium and then named it after himself - and people flipped out when they renamed it.

The Browns did the same and named it after the TEAM and hardly a peep when they sold the stadium name for money.

How is the Jacobs name > Cleveland Browns name? Especially considering additional revenue has a direct benefit to the MLB team moreso than the NFL team.

It's different when a stadium is named after an actual person. People have a weird attachment to it that they wouldn't have otherwise, especially if it's named after a beloved owner like Jacobs. There wouldn't have been an uproar if it had originally been called "Indians Field" and they were changing the name, just like there WOULD have been an uproar if the Browns field was called "Paul Brown Stadium" and they decided to change the name.

Isn't that weird, though? You'd think the actual TEAM's name would hold more affinity than the owner - even if it is a beloved owner.

It's also important how the name of the stadium sounds to the fans. Cleveland Browns Stadium is a pretty boring name, Progressive Field is a pretty boring name, Quicken Loans Arena is an awful name. Thankfully The Q is an option for that one. Jacob's Field also had all the memories of going to the stadium during the 90s when our team was amazing, especially for those of us in our middle 20s, I grew up going to The Jake with my family having seats in the top of the upper deck and loving it. Going to Progressive Field and seeing all the empty seats remembering what it used to be is just depressing.
