2015 NBA Offseason Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

The Bulls are supposedly offering $90 mil/5 years. How is this possible? I thought you could only have 1 designated player at a time (unless you acquire a second from another team), and they clearly have one with Rose (who the goddamn rule is named after)? @col63onel

The 1 player for 5 years rule only applies during the early extension period. We couldn't offer TT 5 years for example last season but he can get a 5 year contract from us now.

Yeah, he's clearly wrong.

The Bulls extended the "max qualifying offer", which restricts the types of offer sheets that other teams could sign Butler to. Perhaps he got his "max's" confused?

Designated players are only those that are extended. Once they reach free agency, the designated tag doesn't apply. Kyrie is designated, but TT could get a 5 year deal because we wouldn't be extending him.

An extension is done before a player reaches free agency. TT has reached free agency, Kyrie never did, as we extended him a year before he would have.

I'm most excited to see who makes the worst moves this offseason. I think the Knicks could do something extraordinarily stupid to appease their fan base. Max offer to Wade? Lakers and Kings also have tremendous bonehead potential. This is going to be fun.

Aparently this is the similar to the deal the Heat offered Dragic

Here is Woj saying the same thing:

Someone is going to have to explain to me how the Bulls can offer Butler 5 years.

edit - My best guess.

The Rose rule has to do with extensions. They are signed after the 3rd year of the rookie scale contract. You then play 1 year on your rookie deal, then the extension kicks in.

Butler waited until after his 4th year to sign this. It isn't an extension, which the Rose rule covers, but a new contract signed with Bird Rights. That way, he can go 5 years, but isn't eligible for the 30% Rose rule.

For the non-obvious max salary guys (like Davis), I think Knight's deal is the best so far.

That Tyson Chandler deal is a deal I hate. He is quite a good fit on that team, but four years for a 32 old center that largely relies on athleticism. In two years they'll be kicking themselves.

That said, staying with Phoenix, they've got some of the best deals in the league going forward outside of Chandler. Knight is good value, Markieff Morris is fantastic value going by the numbers we're seeing today, and Bledsoe is now a pretty good value based on today as well.

Whats PHX cap situation looking like now? What pieces do they need to move to sign LMA?
