With the Browns needing another pass rusher on the DLine, I was wondering if some of you dline experts think Ogbah could slide to DT if we added another edge rusher.
Is he capable of making that switch over?
With so many offenses using running QB's now, I think the way we think about defense has to change.
I want our DT's smaller but faster like an Ogbah, move the defensive line closer together, smaller gaps, then use quicker and smaller linebackers and 3 safety sets. Many see this as a dime or nickel package designed to stop on passing downs, but in modern football you move that safety into the box, and his speed allows for the gaps to be filled and makes it harder for them to run. As a safety, they have the ability to cover backs and tight ends so it also can help in the passing game.
The bears 4-6 defense is coming back in a modified version. You stack the line with four lineman and then put some quick linebackers who can either rush the passer, get the edge on run, or run with the backs, wide out or tight ends. With so many rub routes, the way to combat that is to play tight coverage and go under the rub, but have a safety aware over the top in case its a sluggo route (slant and go)
I know this is easier said than done, but what is amazing to me is we have so many pieces that work well in the 4-6 defense. The reason I say modified is because not all of the 6 are large lineman or linebackers, but actually using speed players, put 6 on or near the line including line backers playing tight.
Ogbah, Myles, Genard, Schobert, Peppers and Randall all come to mind as the type of players that will thrive in this type of defense.
So yes, ogbah can be used some as a DT, we just need to have the right defensive front.
