#12: Danny Shelton, NT, Washington

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not shitting you, I've heard the phrase "look good, play good" from too many Browns players.

Should be "look good, play well". :chuckle:

I'd be concerned these guys heads are in the wrong place if their grammar was strong. I like my linemen so focused on beating the oaf in front of them that they mumble and drool most of the time.

Sean Payton told the media that he would've taken Shelton at #13 if the Browns passed.
Pick = vindicated!

Solid starter imo and the guy I wanted for the value of the pick. The line needs an infusion of (talented) youth and it got it.

Edit: lolz I apparently did not put in enough sarcasm with my jersey comment. My bad.

He's a nose tackle.

Missing OTAs is a non-issue.

I tend to believe numbers even if they don't make sense.

According to these numbers, Shelton's 40 time indicates he won't end up being a three year starter.

I know the argument "those guys never have to run that far so it doesn't matter" but I think the 40 time also speaks to things not usually considered, like overall physical condition, or even something zany not explored yet like lung capacity or something.

There are exceptions to the rules. Shelton seems like an awesome guy, his pedigree is high, and some of his preseason work has been impressive.

For me, this will be interesting to monitor.

So do you think the Browns should try and convince Usain Bolt to be our Nose Tackle?

Just out of curiousity have you watched him play?

Haha I address that exact point in my post. Did you even read it?

I did read that. But the point isn't that nose tackles don't need to run far. The point is that running isn't even in their job description. You make a correlation between 40 times and physical conditioning/lung capacity... but answer me this:

Who would get tired first trying to play nose tackle? Danny Shelton or Usain Bolt?

Nose tackles need to disturb the line first and foremost. This is usually done by pushing the line or demanding double teams. They need to shed blocks to make a tackle. They need close gaps and impose their will. Being able to run a 40 isn't a good barometer for physical conditioning for any of those tasks.

There have plenty of nose tackles through the years that could not run a 40. I think the play on the field so far speaks for itself. How many times is he going to run 40 yards? So far this has been the best pick in years. I have ZERO concern about his 40. Over time so will you!

I know that when I evaluate defensive tackles, some of the first thoughts that come to mind are their ability to run 40 yards in a straight line.

After that, I don't really care.

That's fine and all but, for me, it's the eye-test. I need to see specifically what he looks like in a sweaty uni-tard. I think that outweighs production and combine results.
