#19: Cameron Erving, C/G, Florida State

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just thought of something, if Erving starts at RG, then that will make the O line the only group of starters where we've actually drafted (and retained) all the players. Well, until Mack walks next year. Actually, maybe he doesn't opt out because maybe he'd make more money staying, or maybe we turn out to be not terrible next year and he wants to stay.

I was a bit surprised at an O lineman when we had so many other what seemed like more pressing needs, but lets face it, I'm ecstatic if we get 2 starters out of 2 first round draft picks. We seem to wiff on so many skill guys in the first round that just usable players would be a big step up. Everything about this guy seems good, just the fact that he can play 5 spots is huge.

How different would last year have been if we had Danny Shelton and Erving instead of Johnny and Gilbert?

It's supposedly the "norm" to expect your first round pick to contribute right away. I believed that the Browns were going into the draft knowing they needed legitimate contributing players with 12 and 19, thus sticking to drafting positions that Farmer (and staff) can evaluate best. I can understand disdain for the Erving pick from some (not you); however, it gives me faith that 1) this team has some foresight and; 2) this front office expects to be here for more than just this season.

Quick point on the O-Line. I don't know if Mack will opt-out of his contract after this season, but having Andy Moeller around still will help the Browns out if they want Mack to stay. I'm not so sure the Browns value Mack above the compensatory pick they'd get for him.

Farmer is gone, as well he should be.

-2.2 PFF grade

Only OL to have a negative grade.

When he fails the PFF and the eye test, ouch.

And nobody wanted to listen when I said it was irresponsible to draft a backup lineman in the first round.

While I don't disagree with your assertion, acting like it was some exclusive take by you is hysterical. :chuckle:

I know you guys aren't going to like this, but Alex Mack was also God awful in his first NFL starts and looked like a bust, too. I am no fan of the pick but it was his first start; I think he needs to be cut some slack. Yes he should be nicknamed Fucking Cam Irving going forward but he can still be a productive NFL lineman.

Whoever the new coach is will have Cam at Center because, you know, he's a Center. Pett has him prepping to become the next John Greco...

The way you say that makes it sound like we don't want him to be good. I'm pretty sure we all want you to be right.
