Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread (Francona hired)

In the grand scheme of things, Francona means that we shouldn't quit. But this is still, at best, about an 80 win team. Needs significantly more talent.

But it's a great start.

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread (Francona hired)

Ok my interest In this team Is back a little bit... Even more so knowing that he will work with the FO In trade and FA moves. Also with a name like his here we should attract some respect and Free Agents. The biggest thing that I think he could help and get ready for this!!! Get the respect of the players and actually teach them how to win! There Is talent In the core of this team however, If Francona works with the FO and gets these lost players In shape then I will be watching this team again... This Is a good move all around. I am glad it became true... This hire will bring some respect to this team from fans and players alike.

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread (Francona hired)

According to multiple sources (Camino, Telich, the works), Alomar was offered a spot on the staff, and Francona has agreed to a 4 year deal.

Of course, there's more work to do, but this is a huge 1st step.

I wanted Sandy too, but for nostalgic purposes. Nobody can say he was the right man for the job over Francona. This team needs to win now to prove to the fans that they're serious about it. They needed a credible name that has a history of winning, no matter if he won with a young team or a team full of vets.

Now the real fun begins. The Indians had $18 M (almost 28% of their payroll) tied up in guys who spent more time on the injured list than on the field, 1 of which didn't play at all. For a team that just can't spend like the Yanks, Mets, Angels, Dodgers, etc, do, that just can't happen. Add in $2.5 M for Heredia, who barely played; $1.5 M for Kevin Slowey, who didn't pitch for the big league club at all; and that's $22 M (over 1/3 of the payroll) tied up in guys that played a combined 69 games and had minimal impact on the field.

It's not the lack of money that's the problem, it's the fact that 1/3 of our payroll was useless to us. Antonetti simply has to do a better job of evaluating and spending.

I honestly wouldn't be sad to see him get the ax if the same thing happens next year. You simply cannot make poor roster decisions when you have a limited budget to work with. That is inexcusable.

I don't know Antonetti has even survived after what work he has done. I'm not sure that the guy has made a single positive contribution at this poiny.

The 18 mill that are off the books will go to the increase of arbitration amounts.

Good luck Tito.

True - but there is no way Francona, who is a big time hire in his own right, agrees to take that job without some confirmation that the Indians will change the way they spend and make moves.

Totally disagree. The Indians aren't going to change they way the spend. The only thing that can help this franchise is drafting, and they've consistenly been one of the worst in the league. Don't see that changing.

Terry Francona rode into Beantown and ended the Red Sox curse. And god damn it, he will end the Cleveland curse too.

Man, I understand you guys gotta be homers and optimistic to stay sane, but... I just almost feel bad at this point for some of the fans. :chuckles: Still hanging on to this thing like a child and a burnt-to-crisp teddy bear after nuclear holocaust.

Re: 2012-2013 Indians Offseason Thread (Francona hired)

Honestly, more excited about what the Francona means in terms of ownership commitment than about actually having the man as a manager.

Because there is NO WAY in hell that a hall of fame caliber manager, in the prime of his career, would EVER agree to coach some pinch a penny ball club perpetually committed to signing bottom rung free agents.

The indians had to of made a very serious commitment in terms of increasing payroll and resources spent on the team as a whole. You just dont get Francona to come here for anything less. Because he can go coach anywhere he wants to and have a much easier time than managing the Cleveland Indians with a 45 million dollar payroll.

Mmmhmmm...

I feel bad for ya'll. My guess is that Francona saw an opportunity to work with guys he trusted, the Dolans saw a way to bring in a big name without spending 10+ mill, and maybe put a few more butts in the seats.

Dolans have to prove there will be a renewed commitment before I believe there will be. I could easily see this being the one "big" move they make this offseason.

You think Francona is coming here cheaply? I feel bad for you.

To that end, if they spent a lot of money on a big-name manager, why wouldn't they spend a lot of money on big-name players?

The same reason they haven't spent big on a big name player before: They cannot afford him.

Francona is a lot cheaper than getting a big time bat.
