2012 Baseball Offseason Player Movement Thread

Never even thought about that Boobie.
Makes sense though.

Soriano to Nats for 2/28

Vesting third year if he finished 120 games over the next two years.

Yankees receive Nats first round pick. Rich get richer.

Meh, low first rounder, no? And the Yanks haven't exactly been draft mavens under Cashman. Too many Andrew Brackmans.

As for the talk of Boras' clients being hung out to dry... well, there goes one of 'em ;) All it took was one 'desperate' team.

Perhaps not, but that onus is tough to pin on Cashman where there are a number of decisions made over his head. Especially with the "Friends of George" who have been scouting since they found Yogi Berra.

Morse is still in lingo with the Nats.
Clippard or Storen will end up being odd man out due to this move (Storen is probably the set up guy now correct..?).

Any chance the Indians make contact about either?

here is a Rotoworld blurb on Morse
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Red Sox are one of the clubs that have spoken to the Nationals about Michael Morse.
He would be a backup plan in case the Mike Napoli deal falls through. Morse is being shopped by the Nats after they re-upped with Adam LaRoche, with Washington likely looking for a left-handed reliever and a prospect or two in return. The 30-year-old is under contract for $7 million in 2013 before hitting free agency next winter. The Rays, Yankees and Mariners are among a host of teams that are also interested in him. Jan 11 - 9:12 AM

The blurb you posted kind of answered your question, jhard- the Nats are looking for the same thing the Tribe is, a left-handed reliever. Without one to trade, I don't see a fit. I think finding a lefty reliever for the Tribe bullpen is more imperative than adding a Storen or Clippard. I just don't see a match for getting Morse, either.

One effect of the Rafael Soriano signing: Nats don’t necessarily have to get a reliever for Mike Morse, which expands trading partners.

Morse goes to the Mariners in a three team deal which includes Oakland.

Must be awesome to be a Braves fan right about now. They get to watch the best young outfield in baseball starring the Upton brothers and Heyward.

Arguably the most talented OF in baseball, but 'the best' remains to be seen. Both Heyward and JUpton took a step back last year, if they return to balling then they make one heck of a corner combo. And who knows? Maybe this is the situation that makes BJ finally give a shit. Definite potential there.

And the Braves did a good job there getting Upton. The initial rumor centered around Teheran plus 3-4 other guys. How it ended up being centered around Prado, who the Braves were dying to move anyway, is surprising. Really not sure what the DBacks are doing at this point.

Heyward took a step forward, his step back was the year before.

But the Upton brothers have been perpetually coming in below expectations for the majority of their career. Justin is obviously the more talented, but both haven't shown the consistency to this point.

Maybe they will counter each other and be inconsistent at opposite times. :chuckles:

Eh, Heyward brought his XBHs back up, but his eye at the plate regressed- he still only posted an 817 OPS despite the big jump in XBHs. If he puts it all together, like I said, look out- but these three have not reached their potential yet. Trout-Hamilton-Trumbo is just as talented with more production and is young too. However, if they bring out the best in each other and the Upton brothers can push each other, yeah, they have the potential to be the best OF in baseball. Darn fine trade for the Braves, especially since they retained Teheran.
