2012 NFL Free Agency Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
i agree, he seems like the kind of kid that will do the best with the hand he is dealt, but i was just saying that if the redskins were smart (which they aren't), they would get out of this deal immediately. their plan was obviously to get RG3 then build through free agency, but they cant build through free agency anymore.

Talm i agree with everything you're saying. the redskins have really been backed into the corner with this.

i just think that if heckert + holmgren were smart, they call up the redskins and say "look, we know you guys are screwed, we aren't going to let you fleece us like you got fleeced by the rams, but we will give you an out... 4, 22, and next years second for the 2."

if you're the redskins, thats hard to pass up. you basically save face avoid the issue of having to build through free agency without any cap space.

How do they save face? They would be without a franchise QB and also not have #1 picks for the next two years... The fan base would riot.

Keep in mind that the Shanahans' contracts run out in 2 years. They aren't worried about the long-term prospects of the team, they need to win now. There is no way the Browns make a trade with the Skins for the #2 pick.

As fans, we tend to view all of this stuff in a vaccuum. We want the Browns to be better, and we think RGIII would make us better, so we imagine scenarios where the Browns end up with RGIII on the roster. We had all of the power to make the best reasonable offer for RGIII, so the Redskins decided to make an unreasonable offer. Now they are being punished for cheating the salary cap 2 years ago, and they are going to be hurt in free agency. Again, I suspect Snyder and the Shanahans to fuck that up now too, and try to delay the inevitable until next year. They will still be fairly big players in free agency this season, and really decimate their chances of evolving their team.

RGIII is going to be a very good football player; maybe a great one. But the Redskins screwed themselves out of a future to get him. And now they've been screwed out of the present by poor decisions in the past. However, they now have RGIII, and their best bet at this point is to roll with him and hope for a miracle.

I think it's pretty retarded to cut him before you've acquired someone better.

I feel kind of bad for RG3. I think Talm's right and they're going to try and put off their punishment. So they may be able to surround RG3 with some talent for his rookie season. However they're going to be forced to cut some contracts when they finally do take the cap hit, RG3 may find himself with Browns' like talent around him in a year or 2.

Texans informed RT Eric Winston of his release.
The shocking move clears $5.5 million in base salary. Winston hasn't missed a start since his 2006 rookie season, and has been a key cog in the Texans' highly productive zone-blocking scheme. Despite the release, Winston won't have trouble exceeding what the Texans were going to pay him on an incredibly thin offensive tackle market. Only 28 years old, Winston should appeal to other zone-blocking clubs like the Redskins. Pro Football Focus graded Winston as a top-six right tackle last season. He was 11th overall in PFF's rankings.

The way some of you guys have been talking, we could replace him with bag of sand.

Wow...this is pretty surprising. Winston would be an excellent get in FA. Still 28 so he has several good years ahead of him. Winston plus a RG such as Cordy Glenn would be phenomenal.

Tony Pashos upset Browns are cutting him after he played hurt

Browns offensive tackle Tony Pashos toughed it out last season with a ruptured tendon in his foot that required offseason surgery, and now the Browns are cutting him because he failed a physical. That’s life in the NFL, but Pashos doesn’t have to like it.

Rick Smith, the agent for Pashos, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Pashos is “really upset” about the Browns not showing him the same loyalty that he showed them.

“Tony feels like he had the team’s back last season,” Smith said. “He wishes the team had his back now.”

Smith said the Browns’ medical staff treated Pashos well and that there are no complaints in that department, but it bugs him that after Pashos played through the injury (which he suffered in the final preseason game), the Browns aren’t keeping him around.

“He had to be given an enormous amount of pain pills and shots,” Smith said. “It was an enormous amount, to the point where at Christmas, he went into the hospital with three ulcers from the pain medication. You can see that he missed the final regular season game, because he was in the hospital with the ulcers.”

Pashos is expected to miss at least some, and possibly all, of the 2012 season while rehabbing from his foot surgery. The Browns will save $2 million in cap space by cutting him.

From his agent, but even that almost makes it seem like he's done. How do we not have a backup that's better than him when he's completely busted up and doping that heavily? Also, who gave him that much medication?

So what is the main beef. Since it's an injury doesn't his salary get picked up by insurance?

that Pashos foot scar is nothing. You should the wheel marks on his back after Colt supporters continually threw him under the bus last season :)

i can definitely see shanahan and snyder delaying the entire cap hit until next year (not this upcoming year), then trying to make huge cuts and filling holes. they have really concocted a recipe for disaster over one weekend havent they?

I'm absolutely shocked how unnoticed this news about the Redskins losing 36 mill in cap has gone. That's freaking huge. They can kiss Vincent Jackson/any viable FA receiver goodbye for two years.

this doesnt even take into account what could happen to them for the whole paying players for injuring other players. jesus the skins could be in serious trouble for the next 3 years

Did you watch him at all? He was terrible in run block and pass block, the entire right side was. The left was solid though.

http://dc.sbnation.com/washington-r...-have-not-been-informed-of-salary-cap-penalty

The Washington Redskins have received no written documentation from the NFL concerning adjustments to the team salary cap in 2012 as reported in various media outlets. Every contract entered into by the club during the applicable periods complied with the 2010 and 2011 collective bargaining agreements and, in fact, were approved by the NFL commissioner’s office. We look forward to free agency, the draft and the coming football season.

Looks like they're going to fight it. Watch the Redskins spend the max this season, and deal with the entire burden next year. This is exactly how I thought this would play out.
