Re: 2013 Mike Miller Thriller - Amnestied , Cavs interested ???

He's a shooter. They need shooters. If he can play physically (this is a big ass if), he brings value on a one year contract.

No big issues with bringing him in. Just ensure there are no effects for next year.

Can't ensure no effects for next year. Whatever number we bid on Miller will be on our books for this and next year.

Re: 2013 Mike Miller Thriller - Amnestied , Cavs interested ???

The Cavs only need to have cap room to make the bid . once they make the bid and win . they still need to sign miller. in this case they can use the room exception once they sign bynum. if they do have to renounce or cut someone it would be more likely chris quinn.

Cavs may choose to waive miles but at the end of the day it most likely wouldnt be because they had to.

btw all the cap figures we see are estimated. not the actual office only the NBA and Cavs see that. I am rather disturbed that people are constantly stating as fact what the Cavs can or cant do with the Cap. They pay good bucks to bring in experts who do nothing but study the CBA so when a team starts making moves (unless its tornto) to acquire or trade someone then they most likely have something in place to get it done.

The media although their understanding of the cap is alot more sophisticad. they still even with their "sources" tend to misreport or show inaccuracies with their reports and in this case noone has stated miles specifically only that some salary may need renounced.

it doesn't even remotely work that way. There is no "signing" miller, he immediately is on the roster for what the winning team bid and immediately uses that cap space. We have to move or release a player or players to clear the space back to sign Bynum. The only thing delaying does is gives us a chance to make a trade instead of releasing non-guaranteed players. We still have to clear the space.

outside of semantics are you able to tell me why the Cavs wouldnt just sign bynum and then renounce miles if that was the Case instead of keeping Bynum unsigned. maintaining the cap space unti after the Miller waiver wire completes?

Although I wouldnt be surprised to see miles cut for roster purposes i dont see anything that would necessitate them to cut miles for cap room. not when the guy more likely to be cut quinn can be released and cavs can fill out the last two spots on the roster for min.

I dont see the cavs putting in a full 6 million bifd on miller when they could get him for 2 to 3 million.

Re: 2013 Mike Miller Thriller - Amnestied , Cavs interested ???

Maybe I'm naive, but considering the Cavs went after Dunleavy, Korver, and Belinelli I think there is legitimate interest in Miller. They've made a play for younger guys with a similar skillset and have just missed out on these guys earlier in free agency.

I don't by into the whole getting LeBron's buddies line of thinking.

Re: 2013 Mike Miller Thriller - Amnestied , Cavs interested ???

Windhorst explained the sole reason for the signing (whether it is popular with the fans is irrelevant)...it is to have another "good friend" (besides TT) on the Cavs roster to make signing with us more attractive for LeBron. I don't believe that there is likely to be a material impact on the Cavs' chances to make the playoffs this year. Miller looks nearly done to me, but does bring consistency when he shoots wide open 3s. CJ is younger and has a least an outside chance to be more of an impact player, but is frustratingly inconsistent in shooting 3s (except in the couple of games he was unconscious). Obviously, CJ can/will contribute more than Miller in 2013, but the question is how much more...when the real issue is what either would contribute in 2014.

If Miller is not signed, CJ is still highly unlikely to be retained in 2014. His non-guaranteed contract tells us that (as does the fact that he is likely behind Gee). So, even if KI is close to CJ, that relationship is highly unlikely to induce the Cavs to retain Miles beyond this year (and they may not do so this year for a variety of non-Miller related reasons). While I don't think KI is likely to leave Cleveland (LeBron or no LeBron), it is nonsense to believe that he would be more inclined to leave if CJ is traded or cut.

On the other hand, while neither Miller nor CJ will have much, if any, impact on the Cavs chances of success in 2014 as a player, obtaining Miller adds another piece to the presentation the Cavs wish to make to LeBron ... the absolute most comfortable and attractive place to play. Having TT and Miller would provide LeBron with 2 close friends and nobody else besides Miami is likely to offer him any better opportunity from a "personal relationship" side. Everything else is in place given the $$...an All Star PG, an All Star C (if Bynum is able to recuperate...or some additional cap money, if he cannot and a communication to LeBron that this team/owner are going out and getting the best possible players they can)...and a player they may need to use some of that cap money if they cannot (Andy), a potentially decent backup C in Zeller or a shift to TT to play some minutes there, two very young PFs with lots of upside (TT and Bennett), four different back up SFs to LeBron (Clark, Bennett, Gee, Karasev), and a shooting guard with high upside (DW) and a near winner of the best 6th man award who can shift into a starting role pretty easily if DW struggles (Jack) and a 3 point specialist (Karasev and Miller)....with lots of extra first round choices in the next few years to replenish the roster. if LeBron is looking for 4-6 more championships, this is the only team which can truly offer it to him. Even if he does not come, this team is still positioned to fight for NBA championships...although it will likely take 2-3 years longer as key players need further maturity and experience.

was Windy just on the radio this morning?

The Bynum contract pushes us right up to the cap, leaving just the room exception and league minimum contracts. You can't use either to claim a player who is amnestied. If you bit on an amnestied player, you have to immediately clear space if you don't have it by releasing non guaranteed salary. We have 3 players with non guaranteed salary. Quinn, Jones, Miles.

The minimum bid for Miller is the league minimum salary of 1,352,181. Quinn doesn't make that, Jones doesn't make that. The only non-guaranteed player who makes that much is Miles.

We don't have to release anyone to make a bid, even if we sign bynum. We would only have to clear the space if we win.

By not signing Bynum, the only flexibility we buy ourselves is the chance to make a trade of someone else, likely gee, instead of being forced to either release Miles or release both Quinn and Jones.

Everything I just wrote about amnesty and salary cap is in Larry Coon's CBA faq.

One thing though: We were looking at all of those free agent small forwards before we signed Earl Clark. Now that we've signed Earl Clark, we may have cooled on signing any other small forwards.

Re: 2013 Mike Miller Thriller - Amnestied , Cavs interested ???

Well there aren't many small forwards out there. And there's a definite need for a floor spacer on this roster.

This is a good point. The Cavs certainly were pursuing a "pure shooter" type guy to add to the roster. I'm not sure Earl Clark removes that need as Clark is hardly a consistent shooter. Clark was brought in more for his defense. I still see Gee getting moved. The news and comments on him have practically been non-existent. But Miles is the more moveable piece.

Re: 2013 Mike Miller Thriller - Amnestied , Cavs interested ???

And yet the PD supposedly "confirmed" that there was no connection between the delay of the Bynum signing and Miller? Strange...

So many CJ Miles fans popping up out of nowhere

I also see this as a way to wait to see how the summer league pans out and who they want to keep for the last roster spot. By Not signing bynum right now and waiting a week till summer league is over so they can see who is worth keeping.

Re: 2013 Mike Miller Thriller - Amnestied , Cavs interested ???

Mike Miller, wow. I wish we could have gotten him 4 or 5 seasons ago as I was one of the biggest proponents of it. I always thought that a healthy Mike Miller was a nice sidekick to Lebron. He has lost a lot of his luster but he's still a guy that makes you gulp when he shoots a 3, as you kind of assume it's going in. He also seems to put it up in bunches which would be nice as a little bit of a boost off the bench. I think he probably needs a new spine so I don't really care either way. I think we have a more talented guy in Karasev that could really use the minutes to develop.
