2013 NFL Draft thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We need to pick up a 2nd rounder, without a doubt. It's not even a matter of choice. Too many holes to fill. I'd definitely trade down if it got us a 2nd rounder because I think the Browns are a lock for a top 5 pick where I'm not sure there will be a player in the top 5 worth that kind of value.

Disagree, though it depends where we're picking and who's available. If he Browns are in a position to draft an elite player then they need to do it. We still have holes, but not as many as most think. I'd rather get one elite defensive player who could change the fabric of the entire unit, then 2 lesser talents. I'd say the biggest holes are LB, CB, DE, WR. That's not too many problems. I don't think they should take a receiver unless they think they're getting a potential number 1. At corner they just need a good one who can eventually replace an aging Sheldon. I'd love to take an elite LB or DE early. Imagine this defense with a Patrick Willis, Aldon Smith, Ray Lewis, or Von Miller type player. Those guys change the entire defense.

He's from Tennessee, guess where our owner is from?

If we're gonna be making draft picks based on where our owner is from or anything of that sort, than this owner will not be working out here & we'll be in trouble.

Barkevious Mingo is my first choice. If he's not there I'd gladly trade back.

You have to take your 1st pick if the guy there is an elite upgrade at a position of need which is usually many positions for us. You only trade down if you miss the boat on the first wave of players.

Yes, exactly correct. If the Browns end up in their usual spot and miss the best players then a trade down is fine. If they're sitting there ready to pounce on an elite player then they have to do it.

The thing that really makes this draft even more so a mystery, is we don't know who will be in the front office come the end of the season...We know Haslem is going to clean house in some respect but we're not sure to what extent... For the sake of this franchise, I really hope Heckert is able to continue building on his drafts...

I agree with the previous posts of trying to trade back in the 1st to recoup our lost 2nd rounder... We have three main holes I see that will plague the Browns: WR, CB and DE... If they're able to patch two of those holes as opposed to one, then I'm all for that... But that comes with the caveat on not passing on a playmaker if he's there with the Browns 1st pick..

The thing that really helps in that respect is that this looks to be a potentially deep draft at those positions, depending on who declares...

As of now, I'd go defense with the first pick...

I think an interesting debate to have is whether or not someone like Jarvis Jones or Barkevious Mingo could play a Von Miller type role in our defense: being a 43 OLB in base sets but switching to DE in passing situations and other sets... It's certainly something to think about considering Dick Jauron has experience using his OLBs in that regard with Roosevelt Colvin being a double-digit sack player when Jauron was in Chicago... It would give the Browns someone to move around on defense, cover a potential hole at OLB, keep a good run defender in Rucker at DE and still provide with a legit pass rusher opposite of Sheard... As long as those guys display the movement skills to play OLB and go backwards, it would also allow them to stay at their weights and we wouldn't have to worry about asking them to put weight on... A sleeper to watch in this regard is Oregon's DE Dion Jordan who plays all over their defense, and even has experience pressing WRs...

This DE class figures to be extremely deep with Werner, Mingo, Montgomery, Jeffcoat, Jordan, Jones, etc... There are a ton of very talented names figuring to come out...

The WR class has a lot to prove throughout the season in order for people to get a good handle on it..

I'm not sure if there's going to be a top-notch shutdown CB but there will be several very good CBs in David Amerson, Xavier Rhoades, Johnthan Banks and Dee Milliner... With the AFC North shifting to more of a passing division, as well as the NFL in general, it might not be a bad idea to get a CB who can help out in that regard... The Browns have been able to get pressure on the QB thus far but we've had trouble covering and have seen what losing Haden and/or Brown would do to the secondary... On the other hand, we've also seen how the Eagles corners completely shut us down and what having a terrible secondary, like the Bengals, does...

I just hope and pray we're not legitimately discussing QB prospects come draft time next year...

I actually think Montgomery might be the better fit for us as a blindside rusher, as he has more weight and should hold up better against the run (based off of last year's tape, I haven't seen them play this year). Mingo and Jarvis Jones amongst others look like they could be elite pass rushers, but they'll probably have to play as a 3-4 OLB or a Von Miller type OLB who shifts to end on passing downs. Montgomery would probably be the better natural fit for our scheme.

Let's remedy the WR situation by throwing the kitchen sink at Mike Wallace :chuckles: Suck it Pittsburgh. Draft a top notch defensive player and supplement the rest of the team with some veterans for depth and start making some noise.

As much as I love the youth movement it sure as hell would be nice to get a guy that has proven he can do it EVERY week. Not to mention plucking him from the Steelers.

I agree, but my point was I highly doubt there will be a player of that caliber just waiting for the Browns to pick them simply because they aren't very common. If I knew an LB at 5 or 6 was going to be the next Ray Lewis, er, yeah, I obviously take him. Odds of that happening? Slim.

There's a ton of high caliber talent in the top 5 every single year. The main question is what positions will they be in? Last year was kind of a weak draft for every position outside of QB. This year is looking like it will be a fairly deep draft on the defensive side of the ball. I'd be surprised if there ISN'T a phenomenal talent in the top 5.

I'd love the Browns to have a top 10 pick and then actually use cap space to sign someone who would be as good if not better than a 2nd round pick. I don't think that is too much to ask.

The Browns need a FB. Owen Marecic isn't going to cut it.

Also, seeing that Hillis and Pops are playing quite a bit, won't the Browns be in a great position when it comes to compensatory draft picks?

Not only is Marecic not cutting it, he flat out sucks. Weeden put the ball right where it needed to be yesterday, under extreme duress mind you, and Marecic just shits himself when he sees the ball. When you see that a blitz is coming, you need to have your head on a swivel and be ready to bail your quarterback out.

I don't understand why the guy who helped pave the way for Trent Richardson's dominance in college isn't even getting a shot. He can catch, at least see if he's a sufficient blocker at this level.

Since we're talking FBs, even though he's from Ohio State. I like what Boren does at FB, he can block, he can give you some good runs as a RB sometimes he can catch. He does everything you want as a FB in the NFL
