2013 NFL Free Agency: Browns

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
IF THIS GUY CAN'T WIN A SUPER BOWL IN SAN FRANCISCO WITH THAT DEFENSE, AND THOSE PLAYMAKERS, ON THAT STACKED TEAM, THERE IS BY NO MEANS, NO MEANS AT ALL, THAT HE COULD FUCKING WIN ONE WITH THE CLEVELAND BROWNS.

To be fair to Alex Smith, he nearly did get them to a Super Bowl last year. If not for Kyle Williams, who knows what people would think of him.

Just to be clear, I don't really have a side in this debate. I kind of like Alex Smith, but I'd be more comfortable with giving Weeden another year. If we were running the WCO still, I'd probably like Smith a little more. Anyway, he might have some very talented players around him, but he still deserves some credit for getting them the ball. Everyone likes to put down the game-managing QB. The truth of the matter is, I'd be happy if Weeden turned out to be a game-manager.

If we put Alex Smith on the 2012 Cleveland Browns, how many more games do we win? Everyone likes to point out that we lost X amount of games by a touchdown or less. Weeden was usually good for a pick or two per game. Does Alex Smith, the game-manager, win us those games by not throwing those costly picks? Does Alex Smith convert on some third downs to help put up some more points? I'd be willing to say yes to both. And for clarification, not trying to put Weeden down, he was a rookie. But it is hard to deny that a game-manager would probably have helped us win a few more games last season.

People are mistaken when they say you NEED an elite QB. This year's Super Bowl features two QB's that are not elite. Game-managers can win you games if they fit the system, limit mistakes, and have a good team around them. Do the Browns provide Alex Smith with the right system? I'm not a football guru, but from what I've read, I don't think it would be the best fit for him. Would he have a good team around him here? Depends on who you ask.

Brandon Weeden is older and not nearly as good as Smith.

If you don't want Smith because he is only on the borderline of elite QB, that's fine.

But Weeden has shown absolutely zero evidence of developing, so when you say they could win a ring with Pops it just sounds too ridiculous to sound credible.

Weeden has one year of being around the league. You give him 2-3 years (this year included) and I guarantee he will be better than Smith at any point in his career thus far.

Please. Tell me where in the last 7 years you got this from?

Dude, you're off on this one. Did you watch the NFC CG last year? If that dumbass didn't fumble on 2 punt returns, Alex Smith & the 49ers would have gone to the Super Bowl and probably would have won it. It was no fault of his own, he played great, just as he had all season and this season until he lost his job due to injury.

Alex Smith is a Super Bowl capable QB, and would be the best QB we've had (by far) since re-entering the league. I'd be ecstatic if we could land him. To hell with Weeden, chances are he'll never be a Super Bowl QB. Smith is a proven vet that can get it done.

Legitimate points. Doesn't change the fact he has the best defense in the NFL and is most assuredly a game manager.

If we do end up with Alex Smith I see us being an average at best team for years.

Well many teams have won Super Bowls with average (or even below average) offenses.

I just don't advocate going out and getting a game-manager at this point in the rebuild. 5-11, and adding a mediocre QB who is better (right now) than the one we currently have isn't going to do to much to in my mind. I think that if we wait (with Weeden at QB) that better options will surely arise as we keep adding pieces and this team gets better, whether that be through the draft, or even Weeden actually panning out.

I think you may be underestimating Smith a little. But we'll see, he will be acquired by some team and used as "the man."

Maybe some were below average but that is the exception and not the norm. When you look at the Super Bowl winners the last ten years every single one had an elite or close to elite qb. The fact remains that the browns will not win a Super Bowl until we get that elite franchise guy. I don't think that guy is Alex Smith or and qb available in this draft. Weeden may not be the guy but I'm ok going with him as the starter this year instead of wasting resources like a draft pick or cap space on a guy that doesn't solve our problem.

Alex Smith absolutely can win a Super Bowl and be an Elite QB.

There is no heinous flaw in his game that would prohibit this.

But there's been a guarantee that Weeden will be better, because.....

Well, nobody knows...but it's guaranteed.

Just my opinion. As a fan of the game.

You don't have to acknowledge or even agree with it, but jesus christ you're being a dick. Sorry we aren't all NFL Scouts like you who knows exactly who is going to be who in the league.

Don't have to be a scout to see Weeden has shown nothing but regression.

Opinions are great, but there just isn't enough from Weeden to make that a valid opinion.

Seems more like you're just saying it because you don't like Alex Smith.
