2014-15 Off-Season Thread (Moss Acquired - Page 16)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Do you think we can compete for a championship in 2015? No, again, we are going to be mediocre, because we never go that extra mile to push us over the top

They competed for one this year, and last year. No reason to believe they won't do it again.

Though trying to acquire an ace through free agency has been a great way to win a World Series.

Just ask...well...any team who has tried to get their "ace" through free agency.

Extra mile!

I didn't say we needed to go get an ace.. Kluber will most likely be just that. But fine, if you're going to criticize me more power to you. God forbid I want the indians to actually make a finishing move and to try and bring us to the top. What am I thinking. If you're fine with 80-86 wins next year then idk... But my thought still stands that getting a top of the rotation guy now is the least we can do if we really mean it

So a top of the rotation guy, but not an ace.

Got it.

Good luck with that, free agency is the path to a title.

Yes, I mean a legit #2. Even a good # 3 would work mr condescending ass. That would be 1, count it, 1 free agent move to help round us out. You dumbass. I don't care if you don't agree with me, but you're just a fucking elitist. I forgot, signing 1 free agent usually is a huge deterrent in a winning baseball team. No playoff baseball team has ever signed a free agent.

PS: this tribe team as stands will not be any where close to favorites for the division.

Good teams generally don't have to spend to find good players.

Glad the Indians are one of them.

K. Be happy with a mediocre team that never ever ever wants to go the extra mile to actually be a serious threat. Good for you

You call it going the extra mile.

Anyone who has watched it fail at such a high rate throughout Major League Baseball calls it being stupid with players you can't afford.

Look at the #2/#3 pitchers being signed this off-season. You really think Ervin Santana is the missing piece to a title for $54 million?

Best of luck hoping that dream comes true.

I'm sorry you won't be happy watching the Indians compete for a championship. Even more sorry that you'll probably last about five more minutes on this board instead of getting educated by the many many people here who understand the economics of baseball better than you do.

Thank you. I'll try to be a good student to the baseball economic savants here. Teach me.

Homerism bias aside, I think you have to look at the Indians as the current favorites for the AL Central as of right now.

- Detroit downgraded, even if just a bit in my opinion. Detroit losing Hunter and gaining Cespedes is more or less a wash, and their rotation is taking a clear downgrade in losing both Scherzer and now Porcello as well. Pair that along with the fact that there is a very slim chance that V-Mart and J-Mart are going to replicate their crazy '14 campaigns and I think you're looking square in the face of a 79-83 win ballclub.
- Kansas City replaced Butler with an overpaid, looking to be over-the-hill Kendrys Morales and are likely going to lose Shields and potentially Infante/Aoki. I think they're still our main competition, but I also think we've moved ahead of them thus far.
- Chicago has made the most moves and if the stars align they could definitely compete in this division, especially with a 1-2-3 punch of Sale, Shark, and Quintana to go along with Abreu, Ramirez, Garcia, and LaRoche. Not to mention they picked up one of the better closers in the game, but they still have the difficulty in actually getting to him.
- Minnesota signed Torii Hunter and Ervin Santana. They've got a great farm system, but in my eyes they're a few years off barring something crazy happening.

The Indians are going to camp with pretty much the exact same roster sans Jason Giambi, and have picked up a 2014 All-Star power hitter that fills one of our biggest needs. Brantley and Kluber may be due for a bit of a regression, but you'd also expect guys like Kipnis, Swisher, and Bourn to revert back to something closer to their career norms if they can stay healthy.

This division is going to beat each other up a lot this season...

1. Cleveland
2. Kansas City
3. Detroit
4. Chicago
5. Minnesota

Eh. One thing I won't do is try n count out the Tigers, I've done that a few times in the past and they still contend. They have certainly lost starting pitching but I don't think they are done in the pen. Even if the Cespedes trade was a lateral move based on past performance, he certainly has both the talent and motivation to have a big year. He could well surpass his prior performance and help make up for the obvious regressions of the Martinez brothers. I still look at division this way until game play changes things:

1. Tigers
2a. Indians
2b. White Sox
2c. Royals
5. Twinks

I think it ends up being a close division again. I think the Sox have done enough to reenter the division race, especially in one as even as this one. Tigers still have the pedigree, though, and have overcome obvious deficiencies in the past. Just cannot write them off yet.

I certainly think the White Sox have improved - but they were a 73 win team last year. Easy to get caught up in who wins the offseason - but they were starting from a pretty terrible place.

If the Tigers lose Sherzer and don't sign a replacement guy (Shields/etc) I think it's pretty fair to say they'll drop off quite a bit. Losing Porcello and Sherzer from that rotation and still having a fairly weak bullpen isn't going to be covered up by that offense.

Royals seem to be the flukiest. I could see them being decent again and also see them being pretty mediocre.

Indians' biggest question is how do Bauer/Carrasco/Salazar/House perform? Are they as solid as they showed in the 2nd half or will we see 1,2...even 3 of them drop off? Love to bring in another couple veteran arms and hope one catches on. Need depth there. I think the offense will be fine.

621 second half innings, a 3.03 ERA for the starting rotation. 633 strikeouts vs. 159 walks.

That really was awesome.
