2014-15 Off-Season Thread (Moss Acquired - Page 16)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Please trade for Stanton....

Not happening. He's a free agent in two years and will command HUGE money AND it'd take an incredible package from the Indians.

Why in the world would Oakland trade him? They're in their window.

I agree with your thinking, but Buster Olney disagrees:

The band will break up; it will never be back together. Yoenis Cespedes was traded for Jon Lester, and now Lester is leaving; there is no chance the small-budget Athletics can even attempt to keep him. Adam Dunn is retiring. Jason Hammel is a free agent.

And Billy Beane’s history as general manager is clear: He will turn over his roster when necessary. He traded Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder before they became free agents, swappedGio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill when their value was at the highest point. This means that Donaldson, 28, in the prime of his career, probably will be traded this winter, into a market starved for power hitters. He finished fourth in the MVP race in 2013 and hit 29 homers this season while playing through injuries, but he is about to get very expensive through arbitration and he will have major value to other teams. Oakland could get a good return for him, as the Athletics reconstruct their roster.

Doolittle has a team-friendly contract with team options attached at the back end, and it might be the value of that deal to the organization will compel the Athletics to keep him. But Doolittle also might be attractive enough, with that contract, that Oakland could fill other holes by moving him now, following his All-Star caliber performance.

Scott Kazmir has another year on his contract, and may or may not bring anything worthwhile in a deal. Jeff Samardzija is a different case; he has another year before free agency, and rival executives believe that Samardzija could have decent trade value this winter, as an alternative to the much pricier options in the free-agent market -- Lester, Max Scherzer, James Shields.

Oakland has never stripped down completely, in the way that the Astros have in recent seasons, or the Cubs. In Beane's tenure as general manager, the Athletics have never won fewer than 74 games; the only other teams that can say that are the Cardinals and Yankees.

But this overhaul will be particularly excruciating, because of how good the team was in late July, how well it performed all summer, and how heartbreaking the finish. The work to push the rock back up the hill will start sooner rather than later.

I wonder what Masterson is going to get on the open market since he was left off of STL's playoff roster.

If he comes at a fair price, should the Indians potentially pursue him?

Detroit is going to regress big time next season and I cant wait :chuckle:

Billy Beane does have a history o

Hell yea

Masterson is well-liked, knows Tito and Mickey well, and can provide a veteran presence - it just depends how much he'd command.

Seeing as the Tribe gave Myers 7m coming off of a bad season I have to think that is the starting point for Masterson. With 3 big-time guys soaking up dollars I think teams may feel Masterson would be a bargain addition for one year at that price compared to the others.

I think that'd be a pretty fair deal...and I think I'd do it. If anyone can fix him, it's Mickey.

Except he lost it while under Mickey as well.

That's not to say it was Mickey's fault, just pointing out that Masterson may very well not be fixable right now.

Unless it's for a ridiculously low deal, I'd rather look elsewhere

I don't have much interest in Masterson. Even when he's at his best, he still can't pitch to lefties. He has to be almost perfect against righties to be effective, and that's a lot to ask.

Looks like those $600 seats they are selling that they bought with tax money aren't landing us Victor. Hopefully they sell enough to buy out Swisher.
