2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Are you purposely talking about signing players who are already under contract?

don't think shav Randolph is even in the nba could be wrong and at another sight Kelly is listed as UFA

I cannot believe someone actually brought up Bynum again...I swear you must not have watched the cavs last season, or read anything about them.

Honestly in a good veteran-led locker room who can get him straight, he could contribute. Just needs to to stop being a pain in the @$$ lol

The Lakers were a good veteran-led locker room. They still had problems.

No, they can't. The fact that you even suggested this means you weren't actually following the team early last season. He is an absolutely destructive locker room presence. He can't move any more on the court. He is just big. He is very likely the main reason we never jelled early and didn't make the playoffs this past season. I would never ever want this misfit on my team again. Signing him would be like rehiring Mike Brown again. Do not want.

Gonna get bashed bc of this, but besides his off-court problems, Bynum would be the best here. Wish his head was on straight. He could be a great supporting cast member on a contender, coulda been here. Averaged 11.5/9.5 last year. When the guys effort is in it, he's a difference maker. Sad to see him spiral downward the way he has since 2011.

Agreed. But people in the organization told me it was so bad that in practice Bynum would rebound a defensive rebound and immediately chuck full court shots just to f up the scrimmage and make Brown react. It clearly showed why we were dis functional in the first half of the season. On pure talent though you are correct

In other words he is a huge reason for us landing #1 and possibly contributed to LeBron's return. Thank you Andrew for being such an ass.

Winnersville, I am searching through the RCF mod manuals to find the rule that lets me ban you for suggesting reacquiring Bynum. When I find it....

He could not stay healthy and could not move his feet at all on defense. In fact he was horrific on the pick and roll on nights were he could play. He was also a locker room cancer on two teams last year. Right now he is probably going to sit out an entire year and gain about 25 lbs then retire . No offense, but this is the worst thing I have read all summer. With all then junk in Genpop that is saying alot. :chuckles:

Why are people still talking about Bynum? How many teams does he need to "fail out" of before we finally ride him off?

You'll have noticed that when I put together my list of available FA bigs, which was pretty comprehensive, I intentionally did not include Bynum.

Shav Randolph and Ryan Kelley are not free agents (Lakers recently picked up Kelley).

Chris Sheridan just posted his top 10 available free agents. I hate top 10 (or whatever) lists because I think they are invariably subjective and are designed to get a mouse click. However, I think Sheridan's lists have been pretty good.

http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2014/07/20/free-agency-leftovers-july-20-update-a-new-top-10-list/

1. Monroe
2. Bledsoe
3. Marion
4. Mo Williams
5. Ray Allen
6. Bynum
7. Aminu
8. Mike Scott
9. Garcia
10. Nelson

Next best 10:
Blatche
Turner
Oden
MW Peace
Jordan Crawford
Douglas
Beasley
Brand
Ayon
Stiemsma

I've been suggesting Brand, Ayon, and Stiemsma as guys who could help front court depth, especially if there is a Love trade.

I think Marion and Aminu would be good value depth signings. Marion will probably get more money elsewhere, but maybe being LeBron's backup holds some appeal. Aminu could serve a similar role. Cavs don't really need wings, but these guys are sort of combo forwards and could play alongside LeBron. Again, they could be helpful if there is a Love trade.

However, neither seems to be Griffin type of players, and maybe the Cavs aren't interested in signing anyone else at this time, aside from Allen.

EDIT: Cavs reportedly have $1.4M in capspace....as this article suggests, since we haven't heard of any efforts to sign any vets, maybe they will use it on one or both of the second rounders. That's an option, of course, and can be useful in locking in a second round pick for 3 years, but I think I would prefer signing a vet if possible, especially a big.

As you said, first priority has to be deciding if there's anyone who can help with front court depth. Some of the guys who are still out there must be affordable at this point, although someone like Brand would make as much with a vet-min contract as with capspace. So he could be done later.

If they can't find front court depth, then using the remaining money on one or both of the second rounders is a decent option. I think Harris could flourish with the veterans on the team, but not sure about Powell's future. There are good arguments to leave one roster spot free during the season (trade flexibility in terms of roster spots) but that doesn't matter as much now (20 roster spots during the off-season). Also good arguments for usingup the capspace completely (salary matching flexibility).

I have been waiting to hear about some questionable big signing a cheap 1-year deal with the Cavs (2nd year team option), but...well, I'm still waiting.

It would be helpful if Ray Allen could decide on his future. If he decides to retire, then the Cavs could sign the draft picks and put all efforts into a backup big, no matter the question mark.

If Ray Allen decides to sign on, it's a little tougher. The Cavs might think about not signing one of the draft picks and instead sign a backup big.

Or, given Gilbert's big checkbook, the Cavs could decide to carry a 16-man roster during the summer (it can be up to 20 during the summer), meaning signing both 2nd-round picks, a backup big, and Allen -- with some later trade or waiver to get down to 15 by the regular season. That seems like the throw-money-at-the-problem solution we have sometimes seen with the current regime.

The guys that talk about him, have him in NBA2K, and think he is the piece that will put us over the top. In the game he ranked XX, so he has to be good in real life.

That list makes me sad. In terms of big men, there is nothing but deep bench guys remaining. The kind of center we all think we need will have to be acquired via trade because these guys aren't going to help much at all.
