2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ray Allen

Is he coming or retiring? Is he a future hall of fame player?

As long as everybody has the same goal in mind, winning championships, I could care less about who they suited up for last. Why the hell does it matter? Really immature train of thought.

Wanting your team to create it's own identity is an immature thought?

James Jones is the only guy who has played most of his career on the Heat.

Allen has mostly played for the Bucks, Sonics, Celtics.

Miller didn't even play on the Heat last year.

We needed shooting and we added shooting.

They could come from anywhere. But having a relationship with LeBron only helps.

No. But thinking that we're suddenly the "Heataliers" because we signed 3 Miami Heat role players is...

Oh, but you're correct on that one. That's just me exaggerating, trying to make a point. Let me be clear: it's not an anti-Heat thing. It's just me wanting us to have our own identity.

I have no problem with Allen, other than being really good at basketball, he also adds leadership, and a hell lotta work ethic. Showing our young guns how it's done. Miller is money from 3. My problem is someone like James Jones. Why is he here? Because he's a friend of LeBron? At the max, he'll average 2 minutes per game....

What would be our own identity? Not sign pure, knock down, and clutch shooters? Keep Wiggins and Bennett and send out 4 1st overall picks every game, well that's the Lakers identity. Are we the LakeShow-offs now? This own identity topic is pretty dumb I'm just gonna stop. I don't know what to tell you.

I get this, and believe me, most of us would be lying if we didn't have some sense of rigging it in our favor, but for us it's like payback for 2010 and all the years before where Lebron absolutely would not stick his neck out to recruit for our own cause. He was content to humdrum along with the Drew Goodens and Eric Snows. Now he is finally being proactive, and it feels like, finally, he's representing our interest as Cavs fans.

See...he gets it.

The Cavs will have their own identity, that's guaranteed. First of all, the largest part of the Heat identity came from Bron, Bosh, and Wade. Two of those three won't be in Cle and the one that is was with the Cavs first, anyway, so that's hardly us borrowing a page from the Heat but the other way around.

Second, Kyrie is a very different player than Wade. And if we did land Love, he's a somewhat different player than Bosh -- certainly different enough games that no one is going to confuse them.

Third, even with Miller, Jones, and Allen, the Cavs would still be 75% non-Heat players. Don't know why the 25% minority somehow overshadows the 75% majority. When you step back, it doesn't seem like something that needs worrying about.

Finally, a great deal of team identity comes from the coaching and the system. What Blatt does and how he does it won't have much in common with Spoelstra. The team will automatically look and feel differently. Ask yourself this: would even these recent Heat teams have looked the same if it had been Popovich or Jackson coaching them instead of Spoelstra? Yes, they would've still been winning teams (probably even more so) but they would've gotten there in a different way. Blatt will use Bron and meld the team in his own unique way that should become clear no later than after the All-Star break of his very first season.

How interesting we have in place the foundation for creating our own team.

Yet all this lust for Love is the exact same Miami model how contradictory this has become.

Maybe the Lebronalliers would be more apropos.

It's not the Miami model at all. Miami had three superstars collude to play with each other, each by taking a shorter (and identical) extension that allowed them to all be free agents, conveniently, at the exact same time.

We drafted one of our stars (Irving), signed another in free agency (LeBron, although we also drafted him originally), and would be hypothetically trading for the third (Love) using the assets we've accumulated over the past four years. Our fourth banana (Waiters) is another guy drafted by us, as are Thompson and Varejao (who we technically didn't draft, but close enough). This is not Miami's model. It's closer to Boston's big three model (three stars plus homegrown guys) than anything Miami did, although our players are younger in this scenario.

Is anyone else going to have difficulty rooting for Allen? Those Boston playoff series....

We need veteran leadership. James Jones has been in the playoffs multiple times. I don't care where they're from. Allen and Miller have both won in the playoffs.

We are not the Heataliers. We are trying to build a championship-winning culture that will rub off on players so they can carry the torch for the next 5+ years.

Well then.
