2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
With his 9 years in the league, a veteran's minimum contract would pay him $1.3M/year (close to the ceiling). I have thought all along that he would get a bigger payday but we're nearing the end of July and he's still out there. At a salary that low, he could easily be traded down the road. Not exactly a rim-protector but he made contributions to the Nets.

I'll wait for the The Bullshit Whisperer tweet with this rumor! Seriously, even though he was sometimes apparently a locker room problem himself, I'd have much preferred Ed Davis to Blatche. It's sort of hard, at this point, to compare having Ed Davis with what the Cavs ended up doing with their left-over capspace.

Did we trade for Timofey yet? Let's get cracking!

What would be the idea for Mozgov? The 3 non-guaranteed guys and a first rounder (after Malcolm Thomas can be legally traded two months from now)?

I believe that trade would work.

McGee should be coming back and they drafted Nurkic.

If it's not something like that, I can't see how the Cavs can get him.

Not sure on Mozgov but I'd imagine the Jazz guys were traded for with some sort of plan in mind.

I'd tend to think they would be used for some sort of center either within a Love trade or another deal.

I'd really like to know what is up with Okafor.

Hardly any news at all on his status/recovery.

Why would Denver take that though - we would need some more sweetener.

I guess it depends on how much teams value our Memphis and Miami picks.

People seem to think Miami is a lock but I'm not so sure. Wade and deng are an injury waiting to happen. I could see them sliding pretty quick which would up the value of that pick.

Edit: another guy we could look at it kosta koufus. Could be a serviceable big with some skill. OSU guy also.

Why would Denver take it? Who knows, but they did draft Nurkic, who they may think of as Mozgov's replacement, and are getting back McGee, and I think either the MIA or MEM pick has some value. I have no idea what Denver's plan is though. They aren't in the luxury tax though and saving Mozgov's salary, while it would mean some savings, wouldn't seem to be a huge priority. But maybe they would like to make another move that would take them over the tax threshold.

Koufos is an interesting name, though Memphis' front court depth is a bit depleted since they let Davis walk. Obviously, the same trade works for him.

Pluto has this tidbit today. His point #1 is that in 60 days the 3 non (or partial) guaranteed guys can be aggregated in a trade and the 150% rule applies, but I don't understand his point #2.

1. Most fans know that General Manager David Griffin created about $3.3 million in salary cap room when he traded Carrick Felix to Utah for three players on non-guaranteed contracts. They can be used in a trade. But in 60 days (starting Sept. 23), that $3.3 million is worth about $5 million in salary-cap room. Don't ask why, it's way too complicated.

2. By mid-season, that same $3.3 million is worth about $6.5 million. The NBA salary cap makes the IRS code look like a game of tic-tac-toe.

Kenneth Faried is going to be entering restricted free agency if he doesn't work out an extension this offseason. Denver will need to shed salary somewhere, as they already have big money tied up in Javale McGee, are paying JJ Hickson north of 5 million a season, and have Nurkic coming over who is ready to play.

I have no idea what Pluto is talking about in his point #2.

I also wouldn't have called it "salary cap room" if I were Pluto. They are non-guaranteed contracts that may be used to facilitate a trade, or they are contracts that could be waived if the Cavs wanted to try to retrieve a very small amount of salary cap room. But taking on higher $ contracts never creates "salary cap room"...

Guarantee Faried isn't going to be the odd man out. If he leaves it'll be because some desperate team raped their cap to steal him

Just when we thought we had the Utah trade figured out.

Only thing I can guess is that there is some sort of bonus in the contracts. However, neither incentives nor trade kickers would do the trick here.

Pluto was being imprecise in his language in referring to "salary cap room," but he is right that it does allow them to take on an additional $5M in salary which they wouldn't otherwise have been permitted to do, which is the main thing. I think his point about their contracts being worth $6M+ mid-season is moot, since they will be gone by then, but it is an odd thing to say...

Anyway, the same names are still out there on the free agent market, and the longer we go the likelier it is these guys will be available for the minimum.

If the Cavs execute a Love trade and bring back one other player in the deal, while sending out two players plus the non-guaranteed Utah guys, and if Ray Allen signs, that leaves them with two open roster spots.

If the second guy coming back in the Love trade is a center, the crisis at the center position is somewhat alleviated. However, I would still consider adding another big man to the team, depending in part on whether they feel Haywood will be capable of playing. Brand, Okafor, Stiemsma, Ayon, O'Neal (I'd say roughly in that order) are decent options for this 5th/6th big role.

Another possible area of need is a defensive oriented wing if Wiggins is traded. We've got a lot of wing shooters, but it would be nice to bring in a guy who can guard elite wing players so LeBron doesn't have to do so all the time. That's why I'd be interested in either Mbah a Moute or Brewer in the Love trade. On the free agent market, Shawn Marion is out there and would be a great fit if he is willing to come here and compete for another championship on a minimum salary.

Of course, they could also sign Powell or another training camp invite. The likelihood of one of these guys contributing this year (or future years, for that matter) is very small though.

The Cavs could very well leave one roster spot open, but I can't imagine they would leave two open.

Approximately zero of any of these journalists understand anything about the CBA or how the cap works.

This is a good point. Denver is scheduled to be well under the salary cap next year, but a re-signed Faried gets them close, and they will presumably want flexibility to make other moves, add free agents, etc. next summer. Now I suspect they would prefer to wait till next June to make this sort of trade, but what the Cavs would potentially be offering is unique in that it removes the salary from the books immediately (not something they could hope to get next summer or even at this year's trade deadline when the best they could hope for is an expiring). Either the MIA or MEM pick is pretty decent return.

Also Mozgov is 28, not like he is 24 with tons of upside. Nurkic has looked good recently in Europe.

EDIT: Mozgov was one of the guys Masai Ujiri got in the Melo trade when he was still GM in Denver, and I trust Ujiri's judgment in personnel decisions unless given strong reason not to.
