2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Could be another sign Wiggins is gone. Marion would be able to add some great perimeter defense, and if we got Love, wouldn't be such a liability on offense.

That would be so sweet!!

He's definitely a great defender. I'm just worried this team is accumulating too many vets. The strategy seems very much to win a title THIS year. I would love a title but I hope we find a way to hang on to Dion or Wiggins, Harris, and Delly among others. We need to have young guys that can eventually take over.

Keep in mind, until we got LeBron, we had exactly 1 vet of greater than 5 years on our roster, and that's Varejao. This team needed an infusion of veterans.

Assuming Wiggins and Bennett are gone -

Vets: James/Miller/Marion/Jones/AV
Young bloods: Irving/Love/Dion/TT/Delly/Harris/Powell

Sounds peachy to me...

As I said before, I'm looking past this year. Miller, Marion, and Jones could all leave/retire at any time. If we have three max deals, which would be 95% of the cap room, we won't have room to offer both Dion and TT a contract extension. Do you see my point? I get wanting to win now, but if we fuck this up it could set us back a few years, even with LBJ.

This is so freaking awesomely unexpected. Marion was one of my favorite players as a kid. Just for personal sentimental value alone, I'd be overly jubilant if this happened.

They can go over the cap to retain Waiters and TT if they desire because they own their bird rights.

Can you explain how that works? We certainly couldn't give them both max deals, not that we would, I just want to know how much we can go over the cap.

Not all of them will be making the same "max" though. We will likely still have a lot of draft picks to add young players to the team too. I think we would be just fine.

Well, people are calling us the Cleveland Heat. If we get the Matrix and Barea, that's 2 from the 2011 Mavs.

Might as well call us the Cleveland 2011 NBA Finals

First off, neither are going to get the max.

35. Does having Bird rights mean that free agents can be signed and not count against the cap?

With very few exceptions, all salaries are included in team salary. The Bird exception simply enables a team to exceed the cap to sign certain players. The player's new salary applies toward the team salary just like the salaries of the team's other players. So if a team is over the cap and uses the Bird exception to re-sign its own free agent, it will end up farther over the cap.

I literally said "We certainly couldn't give them both max deals, not that we would." So if I'm correct we can go however much over the cap we want to retain players whose bird-rights we own?
