2014 Training Camp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Thoughts on the morning:

Defense is definitely ahead of the offense. Leonard came in and got first team reps right away. They are expecting Gipson back mid-week though.

I hardly noticed Justin Gilbert on the field at all except for maybe a few plays. I did not see Desir on the field at all. Not sure if he's hurt and I missed the news, or I just missed him on the field. That Trufant they got is way too small to expect any valuable minutes from. Looks 150 soaking wet.

Running game was pretty meh. Not much going for anyone, other than the rare 5 yard burst. Nobody looked better than the other, except Ogbannoya. He looked like crap.Hopefully that proves to be a testament to the run D and not the Oline/RBs.

Hard to gauge the WRs as the play calling never went down field. Miles Austin either A) got a lot bigger or B) just looked small compared to Dez, because as of right now, he looks like the bulkiest and biggest of the WR corps. The fullbacks may have been the leading WRs for the 1st and 2nd teams. They threw to Gray and Agnew a handful of times in the flats.

QBs- I'm a fan of Manziel, but don't care who starts as long as the best guy starts. Hoyer had a decent opening drive, but didn't do much after that. Manziel had a rough first drive, but looked pretty solid after that. There were no 1st team reps for him, but his ability to extend plays is what I think will ultimately win him the job. He had a few nice completions running towards the sideline and hitting a WR who broke off his route and was coming back. Manziel would have had 2-3 touchdowns if the 2nd team WRs could make anything other than an easy catch. Most importantly, he didn't force anything. Threw the ball away when there was nothing.

A big concern for Manziel is his size and being able to throw over the line. He had zero passes batted from my memory, whereas Hoyer had one batted that was picked off by Mingo. But now that I think of it, I don't really recall Manziel throwing from the pocket much.

Offense
A lot of talk of Willie Sneed looking good. He's last on the WR depth chart.
Anthony Armstrong and Charles Johnson are both behind Austin, Burleson and presumably Hawkins
Dion Lewis and Crowell are 2nd to last and last in RB depth

Defense
Phil Taylor is backup to Bryant and Winn
John Hughes is listed as 3rd string
Sheard is 2nd string behind Kruger and Mingo (Not sure i'd read much into that though)
Kirksey opens behind Robertson
Gilbert 2nd string
Desir and McFadden are 3rd and 4th behind the diminutive Trufant

How about Mingo and Kruger over Sheard...that's stunning to me.

Leon McFadden looking like a training camp release candidate.

Swing and a miss.

I think all 3 of these guys are going to get a lot of playing time. I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 play together with Mingo sliding inside in place of Robertson or Kirksey in certain packages.

<blockquoteclass="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Browns?src=hash">#Browns</a> defense in orange today. It's won 3 of 4 challenge periods set by Pettine. Couple of quick observations...

1) WR depth is encouraging.. I think I'd be frightened if these undrafted, unknown guys were coming in higher than vets..
2) Mingo making first-line.. My guess would be that Sheard is going to play a much more versatile role, thus pegging him with a starter responsibility (position wise) would be an inaccurate portrayal.
3) Tony Grossi was onto something when he said Dion Lewis may be out.
4) Johnson Bademosi's tenure here may be over
5) Buster Skrine holding off Gilbert is nice for the time being... Leon McFadden looks like he's out (waste of a pick); Desir is immovable, so Trufant needs to stink it up for Leon to have a chance.
6) Jim Dray may be the odd man out at TE.. If Barnidge can block better than he, Dray would be useless.
7) Look at Marqueis Gray just holding down a roster spot come hell-or-high-water.. He'll see some time at FB and at TE (and on special teams)
8) Defensive line is DEEP. Phil Taylor will rotate in often and starts of as a back-up because he has hardly practiced.
9) Edwin Baker finding his stride?

Went today:

-Nobody can guard Gordon, obviously.
-Haden shut down everybody in the WR v DB drill.
-Terrence West is huge.
-Hawkins blew by Skrine a couple of times
-Johnny threw some nice balls

But the highlight of the day by far was being ~5 yards from the Milk Man himself:

Were haden and Gordon matched up at all? Would be fun to watch and if Gordon is dominating Haden...wow.

I can see Gordon beating him on some deep balls just b/c of his strength and 4" height advantage, but I would never think Haden would be dominated. His coverage skills are too good to be "dominated".

Last year he held Green to 58yds/0 TD's in 2 games, and Johnson to 25yds/0 TD. We got torched by the Bears, but at least held to under 100yds and only gave up 1 TD (he is still human...)

We really need Gilbert to be a worthy #2 and holy shit, maybe the other team will just run on us 60 times.

Just based that on him saying "no one can guard Gordon". And yes, Haden might be the best pure coverage corner in the league. And if he couldn't guard Gordon, again, I say wow.

I didn't see them matched up, they might have been when they were at the other end zone from where I was.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that Gilbert looked pretty good too, didn't see many catches against him in the endzone drill they were running right by me.
