2015 Cleveland Browns Training Camp Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He have talked a lot about the quarterback situation in this thread, I'd like to save it for the Manziel thread and switch gears...

Running backs - Terrence West seems to be dancing when he should be driving the pile. He has bounced outside and opted to take a short gain, running out of bounds barely touched a few times. Is he preserving his body for the regular season or is this just who he is? Is he still bouncing back from injury or is he less aggressive.
Who knows with West. It was a solid performance but I'll hold all opinions on this group until real games start. It was at least encouraging after last week.

Remember when Eric Mangini was a coach? Remember how the big thing going into every season how the biggest strength of the team was going to be that they'd be one of the least penalized teams in the league?

The Pettine Browns are really exciting me with their punt game.

Mock all you want but Jim Tressel is shedding tears over how awesome our punt game is going to be...

Not a fan at all of West, his dancing and missing clear hopes, left a lot to be desired. These were just clear brain farts.

I think he should be number 3 on the depth chart. It's not that he doesn't have talent either, but maybe he's just really dumb.

The last QB we drafted in the top 10 was Tim Couch.

I was referring to ajz20's post, which hinted that a first round QB in 2016 would be the ideal situation of most of the board. For me personally, I was hopeful for a proven starter who wore out his welcome elsewhere... but not the guy who has been a clear #1 starter one season in 14 years, and wasn't successful in that one season. I'm frustrated with a front office that picked an addict with the first round pick (Manziel) and a crappy QB coach (Dowell Loggains) and then figured the starting QB should be really, really helpful... and that will solve the problem. No, you have a QB guru at Senior Offensive Assistant, OC, and at QB coach. Find a starting QB who is good at... being the starting QB. If Manziel can't figure out how to beat out a veteran with all the supports he is given, he won't figure out Rex Ryan's blitz packages either.

I'm keeping an eye on what Pierre Thomas does the next few weeks. I think he is a good fit for this offense and still has some tread left on those tires.

Right. I misunderstood you. We're on the same page. I can't understand why we haven't taken more of a swing at the Jay Cutlers and Phillip Rivers of the world. I know its easier said than done, but at the rate we swing and miss on early round draft picks, I would have gladly given up a few picks to grab a guy like the above.

I've also been saying for weeks to my friends that we should be looking at a guy like Pierre Thomas and/or Ahmad Bradshaw (to a lesser extent b/c of injury/durability concerns) rather than Ray Rice. It seems like the various Browns front offices over the years have always been afraid to take a big swing on a proven offensive difference-maker via trade or free agency. Instead we always try to build through the draft... We've all seen how that has ended up. Yes, hindsight is 20-20, but this feels like a broken record...

The best NFL teams build through the draft. The Redskins of the world go crazy in FA and get nowhere. I do agree, in theory, about trades. However, don't agree that just because we have whiffed on picks in the past, that means we should give them up. Hate that logic.

Just because previous regimes (and Haslam, with the Manziel pick) haven't drafted well, doesn't mean you go away from building through the draft.

That's how teams become consistently successful in the NFL.

But I'm saying build through the draft, just look for a veteran starting QB for his ability to play, not his ability to once be a high school quarterbacks coach because no other team wanted his old skinny Jim Gaffigan looking ass for two seasons.

I actually think McCown can be solid with our line, depending on how the running game looks.

But that's not really what I'm disagreeing with in my post. This is what I disagree with, from deezus' post:

I just hate the logic of "well, we haven't drafted well in the past, so let's trade the picks for that reason and/or stop trying to build through the draft.."

I'm not arguing we've drafted shitty (still blame Haslam for Manziel and I do think Farmer has done a good job), just saying that shouldn't cause the team from changing course..

You don't play starters a lot of plays in preseason because they are at risk of injury in meaningless games. You definitely don't do it in the third quarter so your struggling draft pick looks good against the other team's third string.
If Im not mistaken, the 3rd preseason game is usually reg season dress rehearsal.

As someone who simply hasn't been able to tune in to our first two preseason game I'm wondering if anyone would be kind enough to answer this for me:

The running game stats on the surface seem a bit concerning. I'd like to know to what would some of you attribute that? I've read in here that West looks inept; we must also consider Mack is finding his groove; Duke hasn't been active.

Anything else noteworthy?

Looks like the Browns did draft a quarterback with the intent to develop and that quarterback is developing.

yet the people who've been clamoring for a quarterback to be developed the "right" way seem to be the same ones declaring the Browns have no quarterback because they dont like who the Browns selected.
If the plan was to groom Manziel to be a 3rd or 4th year starting quarterback. its too early to make declarations and campaign to start the process all over again.

I don't think they grabbed up McCown solely because they thought he could help Johnny, but because they thought he could actually play. The Bills thought he could play too.

What QBs from last year's FAs would you have preferred they go after?

Would have been better off letting Manziel prove his worth with Lewis/Shaw backing him up than gobbling up a career journeyman......yea McCown is solid according to one poster....a solid piece of poo.

I think the starters on both sides of the ball have been going about half speed more than anything.

Guys on the second and third units like Armonty Bryant, Jamie Meder, Darius Jennings and Shane Wynn are flashing because they are playing all-out.

Sorry, but McCown is definitely our new Jake Delhomme/Trent Dilfer.

I don't care they brought him in though. Our options at QB going into the season weren't going to be good either way.

Having a veteran is not a bad idea. But I expect the QB production to be its usual horribleness.
