2015 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
At the 'Ducks game.

Clevinger touching 98. 6 K's in 3 innings thus far. I would take him over Cody Anderson to be the 5th starter right now, to be honest. Throws hard, has the swing and miss pitch that Anderson lacks and a really deceptive delivery-- has a high leg kick that hitches or pauses on it's way down and then he explodes towards the plate. Great hair too, BTW.

Funny how it's looking like the Vinny Pestano trade could land us a legitimate MLB starting pitcher because Clevinger is a legit prospect.

Is our farm system as deep as it looks, or am I getting caught up in the hype?

I see a few pitchers (combined with the guys we have), I see depth in the OF, a potential 1B or two, and depth at catcher. What is our farm system really missing? A 3B? Bullpen?

I'm not expert - but seems like we have quite a few high-end prospects for the first time in a long time. But I don't think that means we have a top farm system by any means.

And as for a 3B - people seem to be loving Yandy Diaz in AA. Not sure if anyone has actually seen him live much but I've seen his name a lot lately.

Since when does 1B only mean anything (especially to an American League team).

Well he would have been a top prospect, if only he could play LF as well as 1B.

Means he better hit, because 1B is traditionally counted on for elite offense. Unlike LF.

He's got time to get to that elite level, but right now I agree with Law. He's not there yet.

Just a quick summary, farm-wise, of what we have from an admittedly uninformed standpoint:

C: Francisco Mejia (Who can provide info on this kid? I honestly don't know if he has the potential to take over for Gomes)

1B: Mike Papi, Bobby Bradley, Nellie Rodriguez. Bradley's power obviously jumps out at you, but none of these guys really jump out to me as top-level, above-average MLB starters at this time. I'd love to trade the potential of someone like Bradley for some MLB talent if someone would bite.

Middle Infield: Nothing I'm too fond of at the MLB level. EGon is the closest. Mathias and Krieger were drafted this year and I know nothing about them. With Kip/Lindor here, I'm not concerned.

3B: Yandy Diaz has been getting a ton of love. He's apparently a disciplined hitter, but lacking pop, and his glovework is top notch.

OF: Zimmer and Frazier are our RF and CF of the future. Zimmer's time should be within two years--Frazier is a bit more of a wild card and project at this point. Naquin could be a fourth OF.

P: Aiken, Kaminsky, Justus Sheffield, McKenzie, Hillman and Clevinger all look to have MLB potential. I like our young arms.

Mejia: best arm in the system....MLB included...has performed very well considering at every stop he has been one of the youngest guys in his respective league...switch hitter who has showed some HR pop this year that wasn't there in the past, but has come at the cost of his slash line, most notably his BA and OBP...made a few top 100 prospect lists before the start of this season

Papi: not a 1B anymore, exclusively playing in RF, where he leads the entire system in OF assists...power hasn't come yet, but he hits a lot of doubles (good sign for a corner OFer) and gets on base...if/when the power comes that was expected when he was drafted, he'll make some more noise for the farm

Diaz: pop has shown up this year more so...part of the reason he has been hyped up in here in the 1st place...still needs to come more, but he will be the every day starter at 3B for Columbus next year

I had to leave in the middle of responding to this so I will continue.

Bobby Bradley: the line you use, "Bradley's power obviously jumps out at you, but none of these guys really jump out to me as top-level, above-average MLB starters at this time. I'd love to trade the potential of someone like Bradley for some MLB talent if someone would bite." is just wrong. Obviously a teen isn't going to be a "top-level, above average" MLB player. This year he has the most HRs hit by a teenager in the Midwest League since...Miguel Sano. Sano's age 19 season in the Midwest League: .258/.373/.521, 28 HR, 100 RBI in 129 games. Bradley's: .261/.348/.537, 26 HR, 83 RBI in 93 games...Sano, if you don't follow minor league baseball closely, eventually became a top 10 prospect and has been a very, very good hitter for a rookie so far this year...no reason why Bradley can't follow the same progression path that Sano did.

Pitchers: We are loaded here with a lot of top level LHP starting prospects, as well as having a few middling ones in Shawn Morimando and Ryan Merritt. Would not surprise me to see one of them traded in the next few off seasons to improve the MLB talent.

OF: You listed the 2 obvious guys, as they are our 2 top prospects right now, but there are some others to watch: Greg Allen is a switch hitting CF with a lot of speed who gets on base at a good clip, steals a lot of bases, and has found some HR power this year (7 HRs after 0 last year), I've already gone over my Gabriel Mejia hype numerous times this year, but another sleeper to keep an eye on is Anthony Santander. Struggled his age 18 and 19 season in Lake County, but has finally found it this year after doing what Nellie Rodriguez did...going back to Mahoning Valley for a little bit to get some confidence back. 20 year old switch hitter with a slash of .304/.354/.535 so far this year, 10 HR, 20 2B, 44 RBI in 54 games.

Middle Infielders: Nothing really stands out in the upper leagues outside of Erik Gonzalez (I think he is traded this offseason too), but Luke Wakamatsu will be one of the Indians top 10 prospects here in a couple years, maybe even top 5. Currently in the AZL, he is a big kid for the SS position, is a switch hitter, and a lot of people think he will grow into quite a bit of power. Definitely an intriguing guy, and the whole AZL team for that matter has been getting compliments on how talented they are in general from non-Cleveland MLB guys who have seen them in person.

Mejia is a better defensive catcher than both a healthy Gomes and Roberto Perez? Color me impressed!

Never said that he's a better defensive catcher than Gomes or Perez...just that he has a better arm...needs a bit more seasoning defensively. Allows way too many passed balls.

While I appreciate the comp to Miguel Sano at 19, and from a power perspective I totally get it.

Sano was also more advanced in terms of his plate discipline, as evidenced by his contact rates and BB ratio at the same level. Also, Sano is pegged at 3B whereas Bradley is 1B only.

When and if Bradley begins to figure that part of the game out, he'll rise up those prospect rankings. He has improved on his K rate in the second half, but his BB rate has dipped in that time as well.

We'll see what happens before I start comparing him to someone like Sano.
