2015 Series #8 -|- Indians vs. Blue Jays -|- April 30th, May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I know I've been beating this drum for awhile but if they are serious about winning they need to promote Lindor. Ramirez is a bench player. I think he'll make for a very good one (Aviles-like), but not a starter. Lindor alone would help the infield defense tremendously.

Goddamn the bullpen must be the worst in the league.

I think the defense is killing them more than anything. Look at the big inning the Jays had - two fielding miscues (and, in my opinion, Ramirez not getting to a ball Lindor would have) gave the Jays a few extra outs and they made the Indians pay for them.

8-16 should cause for desperate measures. It's May 3rd and it's still bad baseball. I'd call up Lindor pronto and hopefor Gomes to come back soon and trade Perez for a very good bullpen arm. Fuck it.

Santana is disappointing? How exactly? Him and Brantley are the only two players on team who can actually get on base. They do it in different ways, but it's still valuable.

I think they should consider having Santana hit lead off, with Brantley right behind him at #2. Or if they're content with Kipnis at lead off, put Santana at #2, and Brantley stays in the three spot. Either way, I think the lineup should be constructed to give Brantley an opportunity to drive in Santana, given his superior hitting skill, and Santana being the only other guy on the team who gets on base consistently.

He needs to raise the average. He seems to have the tools to be a better hitter - but I think his mental approach is not there. His stance is indicative of a power hitter, but he's not a true power hitter. If he took an approach more along the lines of Victor Martinez, I think his average would improve 30 or 40 points. In 4 of his 5 full seasons with us he's only hit above .260 once.

He's not a very good fielder and wasn't a very good catcher.

The only thing he does above average is get on base because of all the walks. That is a good thing, of course, but as a "clean-up hitter" not so much. He's good for 25 homers a year, though.

He's a decent bat in the line-up but I think he could do better. He just hasn't seemed to put it all together.

He wouldn't be a bad DH if we had a good team.

They've struggled a bit as of late, partly due to Gomes being out, partly due to poor fielding, and partly due to the pressure of having to be perfect with our flaws in the field, at the plate, and in the bullpen, but as a whole they are top five so far in MLB in FIP. Hardly a disappointment.
So the 4+ ERAs of Kluber, Carrasco and Bauer- along with our record- are acceptable and not disappointing? I somehow missed that.

Yes, FIP is a much better indicator of a pitcher's effectiveness than ERA.

"Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) measures what a player’s ERA would look like over a given period of time if the pitcher were to have experienced league average results on balls in play and league average timing. FIP is a measurement of a pitcher’s performance that strips out the role of defense, luck, and sequencing, making it a more stable indicator of how a pitcher actually performed over a given period of time than a runs allowed based statistic that would be highly dependent on the quality of defense played behind him"

The overall team record is incredibly disappointing, but the rotation has performed at a top five level to this point in the season according to FIP, so I do not deem them as a disappointment.
