They also showed the execs and scouts currently in their organization that they won't hardball them or block them if there is a mutually acceptable parting. That should be looked on kindly by Antonetti, Chernoff, and those below them and help create/continue a working environment considered positive.

It's not like Shapiro had multiple years left on his deal. He was year to year. Given that, had the Indians pursued compensation, what level of prospect would it even have been?

That was my understanding.

Ok, so as long as other FO guys (and Tito) don't jump ship then our on the field product/vision shouldn't change that much.

I know you were concerned about those things happening when the news was first released. Is that still the case?

No on Tito and Antonetti.

Yes on other valuable members of the front office.

I mean, it was a really nice gesture by the Dolan's, don't get me wrong. They run the Indians kinda like a 'mom and pop' store instead of a giant corporation so letting Shappy walk fits that mentality. Shapiro mentioned the culture in the Indians front office today as a place where credit and blame aren't a part of the equation. That's an underrated yet telling quote that really explains why guys like Antonetti, Chernoff, Falvey, Miller and the rest of the front office are so well respected-- they're all heavily involved in the decision making process. So kudos to Shapiro for cultivating that atmosphere. He was always a really good people manager.

I have no basis for this speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if the Indians got "compensation" for Shapiro in the form of assurances he won't poach Indians staffers. It would be a terrible business practice to let a high ranking official leave without some restriction or compensation. Keeping the essential staff intact would be more important than acquiring a middling prospect or a duffle bag full of cash, IMO. I retract my statement about the missed opportunity as long as the baseball staff is kept largely intact.

I think this article summarizes the most important aspect of the future of the Indians. IF Dolan sells 30% in order to use that to bring in a few all-stars then I think we have a future like the Cavs. Get it done Paul.

Umm.... no.

If the Indians spend more than they should (which I doubt they do even if Dolan acquires a minority partner) they still don't have the best freaking player of our lifetime and a team that's heavily favored to win multiple championships... they'll be left with a team that SHOULD compete for the foreseeable future... in a much less predictable sport.

Cleveland hasn't seen a team that has the Cavs' potential since the Browns dynasties of old.

Yes, you are correct. Let's see if the scrooge family spends the money properly.

Serious question, is there any reason we should miss Shapiro? I know he never had a lot of money to work with, but the man was a prominent leader of the organization for SO LONG and accomplished very little in terms of on-field success.

I'm no baseball expert but it's kind of astounding to think that there have been few major front-office shakeups on the part of the Indians over the years considering how often they suck.

Kinda tired of seeing this. There are quite a few similar market sized franchises who would have killed to have had some of the years we had under Shapiro's lead. 2 Division titles under his watch, 3 90 win seasons, an ALCS appearance, and a series of thrifty ass trades which included the Bartolo for Lee, Sizemore, and Phillips trade, Asdrubal for Eduardo fucking Perez, Choo for Ben fucking Broussard, set up the Kluber trade, Santana for Casey Blake, etc. Considering the market, the ownership change, and the loss of supreme talent from the 90s Indians (which in turn weakened the farm with lower draft picks) and his ability to rebuild to 90 win teams, I say he accomplished quite a bit in terms of on-field success. Only short coming, from my perspective, was his drafting abilities.
