2019 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sorry I've been watching Ochai Agbaji highlights
right on smartass and remember that I said it first when Agbaji is a lottery pick in 2020.
The lack of respect for his impact early in the season before he unjustifiably got pushed back to the bench with the return of upperclassman coming off injuries is laughable.

I have a feeling we will not have that pick. I think it and JR will be packaged for a young player with upside and another pick
I think it's possible they move Smith to the Nets for Crabbe more than any other option, because of how it helps the Nets get just enough room for 2 big FA.
It will not offer any other team in the mix in that situation that don't already have the room. Miami actually would still be over after Smith traded to them and cut for example.
Will the Nets give up 17? if so its a done deal for sure. If they come with a counter of 27 and 31 it still might be the best offer Cleveland gets and can then flip 2 of 3 of the 26,27 and 31 if there is somebody they really want in the early 20's.

I'm not sure how much of a market there actually is with JR's contract, given that a decent number of teams will have cap space just a week later that can provide similar or better savings. I'm sure teams are already surveying what opportunities to dump $ will be available once the new league year starts - so the Cavs will likely be competing against that.

The Cavs main leverage is that they are the only team that can provide savings until that date. I've heard Koby mention this, but I'm not sure how much value there actually is in that fact.

Additionally, trading JR's contract for a fully guaranteed contract will likely put the Cavs into the tax. I know Fedor recently wrote an article on Dan being willing to go into the tax, but I'm not sure if you want to start the repeater clock already for what could just be a late first rounder. THey could also trade JR for a guaranteed contract, and then try to avoid the tax - but that in itself will cost the Cavs a pick themselves in a salary dump of their own.

I just don't think there's really THAT much value in JR's contract. It just seems that way because of how often it's discussed (due to the uniqueness of the situation).

We just saw that providing the Rockets $15.6m of savings on Knight's 2019-20 deal only netted us the 26th pick - and that was in a far far worse cap environment around the league.

There's more value in freeing up the space prior to free agency, given how small the per year stretch amount on his deal is (a little over 1.2 million). Teams want to know they have the space or wiggle room under the tax and not be forced to shell out even more assets, if they are desperate to move off of someone later.

Teams are just less inclined to take on money post draft, if that makes sense. Most would rather just carry it over to the trade deadline. Also, someone would rather make a pick if they are eating a contract vs. trying to take a player or asset that is possibly less attractive.

What I mean by that is CLE taking on money for the 26th pick, which they get to make this year....is far more attractive than executing that trade after the draft and just taking whoever HOU decided to take with that selection.

How does Goga compare to Marc Gasol? I know he isnt as good of a passer, but besides that are they similar?

Is he a realistic ceiling for Goga or could he eventually surpass him?

They're similar in function (floor spacer on offense, rim protector on defense), but pretty different in style. On offense, Goga's far more advanced as a perimeter shooter than Marc (or virtually any other center) at age 19. He's also a serious lob threat thanks to his athleticism. But if he catches the ball and isn't either A. open for 3, or B. within 10 feet of the rim, he's not going to pull a rabbit out of his hat and make a brilliant play like Marc sometimes does. He'll usually make the simple, correct pass to get the ball back to a primary ballhandler. That sort of limits his offensive upside...I don't think he has it in him mentally to be a central cog offensively like Marc.

Similarly, on defense, Goga can make some plays Marc can't because he's much lighter on his feet. But he's not a high-level defensive tactician...he's just a guy who plays hard and does his damndest to get his hand on the ball whenever physically possible.

Man the way Gasol picked apart the GS offense last night and just waltzed around making great plays. Wow. He read their offense like it was "Go Dog Go".

Gasol is a grandmaster. He is like a bigger slightly less dynamic scoring Kevin Love who is a DPOY level player. Goga doesn't have that brain so far.

Thanks guys!

Yeah Marc Gasol has been one of my favorites for years, and Im impressed again as he is one of the few hulking centers that doesnt get run off the floor so far in the playoffs.

He took quite some to develop though, so lets hope Goga can have the same trajectory. Would love if we picked him, our team would be super intense with him, Sexton and Cedi.

with the front court logjam there is next to no chance they pick Goga at 5.
Not to say he might not be worthy, it's a little high imo. he definitely won't last to 26.

So the best thing about a guy Marc's size being able to shoot 3s is that even though he doesn't end up being a low post threat as much, he's generally back on defense to protect the rim. To me, that's a bigger reason for the 7 footers to start hitting 3s. Him and Siakam are a perfect combo.
