2019 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hunter or Culver? Culver or Hunter? If you asked 50 people 25 would say Hunter and the other 25 would say Culver.
I've tried to ingest everything I can on these 2,,Hunter is a lock down defender and good 3 point shooter..not a great creator and older than Culver.
Culver has a better all around skill set and higher upside. I saw a write up the other day that said Culver is the better player now. I had all but decided I liked Culver better and
then I see some comment on one draft site that says Hunter is the closest thing to kawhi Leonard in this draft.
I still think I would roll with Culver.

Saying Hunter is the closest thing to Kawhi in this draft is kind of misleading, even if it's true. Could just as well say Garland is the closest thing to Curry, Hayes is the closest thing to AD, etc, etc. Doesn't actually mean those are reasonable comparisons.

Hunter outplayed him under the big lights too. It's a tough call

I think you're pigeonholing him with absolutes. Hunter has a way of getting better--now is there more of a ceiling there? Maybe, maybe not. Age is not on his side in that argument of course. I think he certainly could improve. He will never be a #1 option level creator....but I think he's a bit of a cerebral player and I expect him to be able to navigate the Pick&roll well enough to make himself a weapon with the ball in his hands. I question his ability to do it in a meaningful volume, I don't necessarily think it''s impossible but I'd have to see it. I also think his shooting is absolutely for real. Good touch, good form, etc.

I agree with a somewhat limited ceiling but I also think he's a superior player to Barnes on both ends of the floor.
too rich for 5 is all I'm saying and it's a settle really that high. He can play well in the flow of the game but don't ask him to create offense which this team sorely requires from whomever they pick imo.

A couple of drafts have have Coby white in the mix as well. I'd be fine with any of hunter, Culver, white, or reddish at 5. Also, if we can swing a deal for the 12 pick I'm taking either bol bol or hachimura

Exactly. Most of these comparisons are writers taking one or two good attributes that a prospect possesses and that gives them the all-star player that they compare them to.

Hunters good defense and good shot selection is probably why a writer or blogger would compare him to Kawhi. Garland's 3 pt range and handles is why someone would compare him to Curry.

If Carsen Edwards can be even a poor man's version of Vanvleet I think he is worth taking at #26.

Edwards is going to be an excellent scorer on a bad team.

@Nathan S How does your draft model rate PJ Washington and why?

I know I've complained about ESPN's draft coverage already in here lol, but they've hardly had anything from Kevin Pelton this year. He did a top 30 a while back, but no complete rankings yet.. and minimal explanations behind why his model liked/disliked guys. Haven't found PIPM for this class either.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on PJ.

Mildly positive overall, pretty well in line with the mainstream opinion of him as a late lottery to late teens kind of guy. Very well rounded. Lukewarm assist:TO and steals numbers make it see him as more of a solid starter than a guy with serious star potential. Strong SOS and on/off splits suggest he may be slightly better than his raw box score stats suggest. I had him 18th on my big board, and will probably move him up 2-3 spots from there by draft day. His battles with Williams were some of the best basketball I saw all year...they really looked like men among boys.

I'm 30 seconds in and I'm liking what I'm seeing. Let's go through the video.

1. He drove left. He's 7'3 and he felt confident enough driving with his off hand.
2. Skinny as a rail but fought through some contact and showed enough touch to finish.
3. Shows great touch and depth perception in his post ups. Doesn't look super skilled in post yet but he flashed some moves. A drop step or two. But he's 7'3 and long, he can live on that.
4. A pull up deep 3. Hits it. ZERO hesitation.
5. Spot up 3. Good form and follow through.
6. Turn around jumper from the mid-range.

Okay I've seen enough. I'd be VERY happy if we took Bol Bol.

He has the length to be a rim protector, the length to be a plus rebounder. And he's a 7'3 floor stretcher.

I know his dad was done at 31 but there's a great chance Bol will be gone once we lose player control anyway. Plus he looks springy and slender. I don't worry about health for the young man.

2020 NBA draft digression: 17-year-old Theo Maledon making plays in the French League finals. If you liked SGA in the 2018 draft, Maledon is looking like a rich man's SGA as a prospect. Really like him as a backcourt partner for Sexton.
