#21: Browns select Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
People said he has character issues...call me dumb but I don't mind that the guy we drafted got in trouble for beating someone up. This wasn't robbery, sexual assault, or stealing computers...he beat someone up. I'd have more of a problem with his character if he had gotten beat up. Defensive line is a nasty position...Ndamakan (sp) Suh tried to to throw our QB's helmet into the stands in a preseason game...did I mention that Jake Delhommes head was still in the helmet??? You telling me you don't want that kind of guy as your DT??? Last time we had a nice guy as a D-Lineman was Courtney Brown, he had every measurable needed but he was a nice guy and that hurt his overall game. I've read the same thing about Kam Wimbley (although he was really effective for the Raiders last year).

This is why I want Jabaal Sheard with one of our 2nd round picks. He tossed a dude through a glass door. I consider this a positive.

I'll take a personal foul on Ben Roethlisberger any Sunday. I'll take another D-Lineman and a WR in Round 2.

So, last night I called him Warren and Brown...

Having slept on it, I do feel better. The thought of stuffing up the middle with both Taylor and Rubin will free up DQ Jackson to do GREAT things. It will allow our LB'ers a ton of space. Taylor also has a tremendous upside too, because of his size and athleticism, he can become a good pass rusher too.

That being said, I wanted to come out with a play maker in this draft and I don't think Taylor is a play maker. He's not a playmaker, but he is, if you know what I mean. What he specifically brings to the table isn't playmaking, but the result of adding him will almost assuredly help the run defense become top 20.

A guy like Taylor's effect on the game rarely shows up in the stat sheet under his name. As some have mentioned...the key with a guy like him is that he forces running backs to try to get outside by clogging up holes and getting a push.

Guys like him are just as important when they're not making tackles as they are when they do make tackles. I could personally care less whether he becomes a strong pass rusher or not. Not really what he's there for.

He won't be the defensive ROY, but he should be a useful o-linemen eater, thus freeing up our DEs and LBs. I'm starting to lean towards Bowers with our first 2nd rounder, but unlike others, I want a CB/S or RT with 59.

Bowers is looking like he might be our Colt McCoy this year. A player that should have and could have been gone before we came up and wasn't. I think you gotta take your shot with Bowers and just hope he can come in and make some plays and I immediately feel great about or defense next year.

I'm not necessarily mad at the pick, but I wished we would of given up a 4th instead of a 3rd. I think there's going to be some good talent at the top of the third round. Anyways..

I loved the trade down with Atlanta. I was thinking we should grab a pass-rusher with our 1st and a DT with our second rounder (37). I was hoping for either Houston, Jordan or Bowers at 27. It turns out that 2 out of the 3 will be there in the second round. So grabbing Taylor before NY, Shittsburg or the Ratbirds could even think about it, made me pretty happy.

I see the Browns needs are a DE, RT, WR, DB, LB. I'm thinking we might take Bowers (DE) or Brandon Harris (CB) at 37 and either Greg Little (WR) or Justin Houston (DE) at 59.

Go Browns!

Watching the OU game highlights, he was getting double team constantly and was not getting moved even in inch. Every now and then he would even beat the double. If Baylor had better LB's, OU would have been in trouble. Just imagine if you have to pick between doubling Rubin or Taylor and having trouble getting out on the LB's because of our front 4? We might not have the playmaking OSLB or DE yet, but this is definately a good foundation.

I am not going to say I like the pick, I truly dont know enough about Taylor, what I can say is I love the idea of the pick. A huge athletic tackle who plays 80 plays a game to put next to Rubin for 85% of our defensive plays.

I only want Bowers if our medical staff cleared him.

I said I wanted Rahim Moore. That's a FS.

Do you have footage of the Baylor Oklahoma game?

Do you have footage of the Baylor Oklahoma game?

I saw it.

It shows what Taylor can be at his best and worst.

It's all about his way off of the line. If he can get a good read on the snap, he's immovable and can get into the backfield in either run or pass defense. If he doesn't, he can be pushed around a little bit... It's all about the way that our DL coaches and DJ and Ray Rhodes can do with him to get him coached up.

Definitely talent there. He makes sideline to sideline tackles. Just needs to put in some hard work and he could really be something.

lol @ this Red guy freaking out because Mel Kiper's Best Available doesn't directly correlate with how the draft plays out.
I remember last year when Mel Kiper said TJ Ward was a 4th or 5th round pick when we took him.

The money comment is a little...uh...concerning??

His coach from Baylor was on the Really Big Show. He was saying money talks before they even asked him about it. Yeah the money comment could be concerning, but it could also motivate the guy to keep his weight down (by putting it in his contract) and for future contracts (more money).

Kiper's an idiot anyways.
