#36: Rakeem Christmas - PF/C - Syracuse

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yes, but didn't that deal require that actual salary be eaten? There was a cost to the other side for giving us that TPE. Here's, there's zero cost Take the guy in trade, cut him.

in some of the deals yes, the salary was guaranteed, but the teams that did those trades were under the "min-team-salary" point, so the extra salary that they took on didn't really cost them any real dollars in the end, since the money had to get spent on players regardless.

When does that min-salary get calculated/paid, though? I thought that doesn't get paid until the end of the season.

Frankly, I think it's two weeks too early to lay judgement on the league wide value of Christmas. I don't own a crystal ball and I don't practice saneria, but if this guy shows he can score out of a pick and roll/ pick and pop and defensively at least alter some shots, his value could climb. His biggest knock was only looking like an NBA player his senior year. Well, who cares about the past at this point? Can he show the ability to help a team this year? Players raise their stock in summer league every year. In the summer of 2002, I saw Boozer prove he was a better player than lottery pick Dajuan Wagner. I DONE SEENS IT!
I dont think we are in disagreement Keys. My point is as of today he is not def in our long or short range plans. What if we get both Caron Butler and Prince? You think we are going to cut a vet for him? I just dont see it. His value could rise, but at the end a lot of guys have great summer leagues and never see the light of day in the nba.

But the problem is that we actually need another body at the 4/5, and neither Butler nor Prince fits that bill. Christmas is about as cheap as you can get.

I don't see any way the Cavs go into the season with Moz/Love/TT/Andy as our only four bigs.

FA is not over. Heck Ben even opened the Amare thread (not that I expect it will happen)
Who knows maybe we get a big with the Haywood trade. Until we see our rsoter at the end of FA and after the haywood situation is over, we are just speculating that we have a roster spot for him.

It just got calculated/paid for 2014-2015 over the last day or two.

Thanks.

Which means that whomever took on those salaries paid out that money much earlier than they would have had to if the alternative was the floor penalty. And plus, if they did any transactions during the season that increased salary, anything they were paying the guys we traded would no longer be offset by the floor penalty.

So again, the point is that we had to give away all those second round picks because the guys we gave away actually cost that other team. This is a freebie.

That's true. I was just saying that not keeping Christmas because Butler and Prince took the last two roster spots was not going to happen.

But if yo are Philly why not ask for an asset, when the other team has to make the trade and you don't? I mean I would not ask for a 1st rounder, but the rights to a second round pick who is unproven and may not even make your roster is out a crazy demand IMO. I would not be doing my job as a GM if I did not get an asset from it. That is why teams like Philly keep cap space open during rebuilds. You get as many assets as you can for future use. The cavs may so no we will give you Porter, but I think we are going to have to give up something.

Not that Rakeem would get the necessary playing time in his first year, but I don't have a doubt that LeBron would make him look like a great player. He did it with JJ Hickson for crying out loud. I think Rakeem would feed off LeBron in a similar manner. Just roll to the rim and dunk off pick and rolls. Perhaps the occasional pick and pop on the mid range. Rakeem has the physical tools to be a good player, but you can't discount how much better somebody looks playing next to LeBron. And Rakeem has a lot of good bigs on the team to learn from.

On the first day of Christmas, my Rakeem gave to me

A double-double in a Cavs uni

(with under 4 turnovers and a couple of moves where he creates his own shot, showing some flashes on man-to-man defense and the ability to keep guards in front of him on P&R switches, and some leadership qualities, competitiveness, and no deer-in-headlights looks either, along with at least one block).

I was a huge fan of Juanny.... actually lost a $100 bet that he'd be an All-Star within his first 5 years in the league.

Unfortunately, I saw the same thing too in the Summer League. Boozer was by far the better player. I convinced myself that Juanny just need some time to figure out the game but little did I know that he had no left hand whatsoever and that he wouldn't be able to stay healthy, at all. I loved his quickness, his floater and his shooting(although he ran VERY hot and cold, when he was hot he was damn near unstoppable like JR... unfortunately he was way more often cold than hot).

He gave me some hope with games against Toronto, Denver and Miami where he was hot from 3 but those were all in his first two months before teams learned that he had no left hand and started overplaying him to one side.

That draft was the only draft that I actually liked Pax's picks(other than 2003, but that doesn't count. . I was a big fan of both Wagner and Boozer pre-draft. I thought Wagner was the best player in that draft (although I would've probably taken Ming over him at #1 due to his size). I thought he'd easily be a better player than Jay Williams and Dunleavy (went 2 and 3). I was ecstatic when he fell to us. I wanted to trade up in the late 1st for Boozer after seeing what he did in the tournament(If Duke gets him more than 10 shots, they beat Indiana.... Williams and Dunleavy were a combined 11-35 and lost them that game. Boozer was the best player on the court in that game.) and reports from his workouts.

Anyways, Wagner was my biggest draft miss of all-time. I made up for it by hating the Luke Jackson pick from the second it was made(I wanted JR Smith, Jameer Nelson or Pavel Podkolzine(ugh, damn you Chad Ford)). RandolphKeys and some of you guys from the Cleveland.com and SaneCavsTalk days may remember my diatribes against the Jackson pick.

Of course, I moved on to a somewhat miss the next season.... I was a HUGE Shannon Brown fan, like thought the guy would be the next D-Wade(in my defense he wasn't a horrible player and played quite a few years). I was somewhat vindicated again with the Boobie Gibson pick as I LOVED that pick because I wanted either Gibson or Brown at 26 and we got BOTH.

Oh, memories.... One last one I'm sure Keys will remember is my love affair with Steven Hunter. I wanted that guy as a backup for Z so bad. I loved his defensive potential and I still think LeBron would've made him look so much better by hitting him with alley oops (pretty much his only offense). I hated when he was stuck behind Dalembert in Philly even though I though he was the better player of the two. We didn't talk much about advanced stats at the time(82games stats were popular though) but he averaged 2.5 blk/36 for his career including 3 years that he averaged over 3per36.

First of all, it's 'pump the brakes', not 'pump the breaks'. The metaphor is slowing down your car, not dancing to a 1980s rap lyric.

Second, the question isn't whether Christmas is better than TT. It's whether he's better than whatever random-ass insurance big we could scrounge up at this point to provide insurance against AV going down. (Or to be the 4th big if we package AV with the Haywood contract). There is an OK chance of that I'd say, unless we need a true center. I don't think he is strong enough to either defend or post up true NBA centers that well, and he doesn't yet have the offensive versatility to pull them away from the basket. But he can certainly be a big playing against a smaller lineup.

Third, Christmas was picked in the 35 slot. Draymond Green was also picked in the 35 slot of the second round. I think the conclusion is clear: Christmas is the next Draymond Green.

Finally, where the fuck did Christmas get a jump shot? I didn't see that at Syracuse.
