5000 birds and 100,000 fish suddenly die in Arkansas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

For the last five days wildlife experts and officers from the forestry commission have picked up more than 1,000 turtle doves as well as other birds including pigeons.

Yesterday alone 300 corpses were recovered with all of them having a blue tinge to their beaks, which scientists say indicates poisoning or hypoxia which is lack of oxygen that can confuse animals
.

The incident in the town of Faenza in northern Italy comes after a series of similar cases across the world in the United States and Sweden.

It is not just birds that have been affected, with millions of dead fish also washing up on river banks and coastlines.

The turtle dove case is the largest incident to have hit Europe so far – in Sweden 50 jackdaws were found dead. Italian officials said they expected results from the tests on Monday.

Most of the birds have been found around an industrial estate on the outskirts of Faenza but others have also been found closer to the centre in trees and on roads and pavements.

One local newspaper covering the incident wrote: "Let's hope it is poisoning or an illness because that would be easier to deal with than it being a sign the world is coming to an end."

Massimo Bolognesi, of the local World Wildlife Federation, said: "We first started getting reports on Sunday and since then they have been coming in every day.

"We have collected more than 1,000 turtle doves corpses but there is also the odd pigeon as well and all of them have this blue tint to their beak which could indicate poisoning or hypoxia.

"Tests are being carried out on the bodies by the local forestry commission and we should get the results next week but it's the numbers that make this such a notable event and for the moment it is a mystery."

Even if these types of die offs are normal, like some scientists say, we are now proably going to get news articles every time it happens for the next year or so due to the press these stories have gotten over the last week(s)

edit:

ment to add this pic (with a twist) too of one of the areas (not sure which one) where this has occured recently

I agree but there are birds dropping out of the sky worldwide and it's an interesting subject.

The fact is, this doesn't happen in the way that it's happening in the areas it's happening in.

If birds continue to die in Arkansas, THEN I'll hold my breath.

I think everyone is pretty relaxed...just curious. People don't trust the U.S. government to be honest or to do the right thing, and for good reason. I think it's an interesting situation and I'm enjoying watching it develop.

Hundreds of turtle doves found dead

(UKPA) – 1 day ago

Hundreds of dead turtle doves have been found in a town in northern Italy.

An Italian association for bird protection said that more than 700 dead birds have been picked up since January 1 from the streets of Faenza, about 30 miles south east of Bologna.

Scientists have carried out tests to discover why the birds died but Nadia Caselli of the bird association said they appear to have overeaten sunflower seeds, which damage their livers and kidneys. The seeds are mostly waste from a nearby oil factory.

To be fair to KCOTT sure those are mostly proven conspiracies, but did they really "work out"? :chuckles:

Haha fair point. Nonetheless, despite their failures, they were all once considered conspiracy theories and were proven to be real.

So what the fuck's going on with this? Has it been determined that too much attention was being paid to something that's been going on for a long time and thus this is a non-issue? I'm assuming that since nothing has come up, then there is nothing more to this.

Yes, its common for these things to happen. They never have made headlines before. Its basically like waking up one day and everyone is in a panic because the media headline "Bears shit in the woods"

In North America alone, over 160 mass die offs were reported last year. Nothing to panic over by any means. It happens. About once every other day. Most of these are because of disease, atmosphere condition, or diet.

200 Dead Cows Found In Wisconsin
200 cows were found dead Friday on a farm in Portage County, Wisconsin. The dead cows had to be removed with semi-trucks. The rest of the farm has not been quarantined, as officials say no threat is posed toward humans or other animals, according the The AP.

The owner of the dead cows was working with a local veterinarian, who initially believed a virus such as infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) or bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) could be the culprit, according to The Wausau Daily Herald. WSAW News reports that more recent updates have suggested pneumonia as the cause of the mass cow deaths, though such widespread cases of pneumonia are rare. Tests are still underway to determine what is responsible. See WSAW's full video report here.

Though likely unrelated, many other incidents of mass animal deaths have been reported in the U.S. and around the world in the past month. Thousands of dead birds fell from the sky in Arkansas on New Year's Eve, following a massive fish kill just 100 miles away days earlier. In the week following, other mass bird deaths were reported in nearby Louisiana and Kentucky. Birds were also reported to fall dead from the sky in Italy and Sweden, and more recently similar incidents have been reported in California and Alabama.

Mass fish kills have also been reported in Chicago, Maryland, Brazil and New Zealand, along with 40,000 dead crabs that washed ashore on England beaches.

Many explanations have been offered for the various mass animal deaths, with everything from fireworks, semi-truck collisions, overeating and cold weather blamed for the birds' deaths. Cold weather has also been pinned to likely be the cause of many of the fish and crab deaths, as well. According to The AP, mass animal deaths are not all that uncommon.

Hundreds Of Dead Birds In South Dakota Were Killed By U.S. Government
When hundreds of dead birds were found Monday in Yankton, South Dakota, many residents were puzzled, thinking it was the latest in a string of similar mysterious mass animal deaths around the world. But this is one instance of the many where a clear cause has been identified, as the U.S. government claims responsibility for killing the more than 200 starlings.

It was initially believed that cold weather may have caused the bird deaths, but then Yankton police received a call from the USDA, attesting that they had poisoned the birds at a feedlot 10 miles away, KTIV reports. Apparently, some 5,000 of the birds were defecating in the feed meal, posing a threat to the animals and farm workers, when the USDA decided killing them would be the best action to take.

A bait laced with the poison DRC-1339 was used, though officials were surprised the birds made it so far before dying. They assure that the poisoned dead birds do not pose a risk to nearby animals or humans.

While the mystery of dead birds falling from the sky in South Dakota was quickly solved, similar mass animal deaths around the world remain enigmatic. 200 dead cows were recently found on a farm in Wisconsin, with a disease or pneumonia suspected as the culprit. Prior to that, mass bird deaths ranging from dozens to thousands were reported in Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky, California, Italy and Sweden. Mass fish death had been report in Arkansas, Maryland, Chicago, New Zealand and Brazil, and 40,000 crabs washed ashore beaches in England.

Officials don't believe any of the incidents are related, and suspect a wide range of causes to be responsible, from cold weather and fireworks to semi-truck collisions and overeating, though they admit in many instances a clear cause may never be identified. According to The AP, mass animal deaths are not a rare occurrence.

Car hits deer on Interstate in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS – A vehicle struck a deer on the Interstate in Newport News Thursday morning, causing a crash that blocked the roadway for more than an hour.
Va. State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said it happened around 5:17 a.m. on I-64 west near Denbigh Blvd.
The vehicle that struck the deer then struck another vehicle; there were minor injuries, Anaya stated.
Traffic was backed up because of the crash. At one point, both lanes were closed and drivers were using the shoulder to get around the vehicles.

Fears for children after car kills cat

A COUPLE have said that they will think twice about bringing up a family on a Cotmanhay street after a speeding driver hit and killed their beloved cat and drove away.

Lucy and David Stevenson have been left devastated after their pet Izzy, a grey and white cat, was killed in Norman Street last Tuesday.

Neighbours looked on in horror as the blue Vauxhall car raced over the street’s speed humps, hitting the cat at such speed that she was thrown into the air at about 6pm.

The couple are now calling for a reduction in the 30mph speed limit on the street, which is home to families with children and is close to Granby Junior School and Charlotte Infants School.

Lucy, 31, said: “I’m absolutely fuming that they didn’t have the decency to stop – if it had been a child would they have stopped?

“If the car caused that much damage to a cat, it could do the same to a kid.”

She added: “A 30mph speed limit is too fast for a road like this – the speed bumps are there for a reason.

“If there was a slower speed limit it could have saved my cat’s life.”

She said that the street is particularly busy with school traffic and often has cars parked on both sides.

“We want to bring up a family here,” said Lucy.

“But it makes you think twice when something like this happens.”

As well as Izzy, who was nearly three-years-old, financial administrator Lucy and David have three other cats and a dog.

“My neighbour who saw it happen said Izzy was heading across the street to our house,” said Lucy.

“When they told me what had happened I just couldn’t even go out to see, – it was awful.”

Cows slaughtered for meat

KANSAS CITY (Dow Jones)--U.S. live cattle futures climbed Tuesday as a jump in wholesale beef prices sparked buying.

The February live cattle contract recently climbed 0.35 cent, or 0.33%, to $1.0730 a pound, while the April contract rose 0.12c, or 0.11%, at $1.1157. January feeder cattle were down 0.02c, or 0.02%, at $1.2227 a pound, while March futures were up 0.65c, or 0.53%, at $1.2407.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported its choice composite wholesale beef price rose Monday by 65 cents to $166.48 a hundred pounds. Select beef climbed 53 cents to $160.55. The volume of steaks and roasts sold was a moderate 167 loads, and there were 100 loads of trimmings and coarse grind product reported.

The bump in wholesale beef prices fueled renewed buying interest in futures after the USDA reported late last week wholesale beef values fell, raising expectations winter beef demand was softening.

The continued strength in beef markets was "mind boggling," said Joe Ocrant, president of Oak Investment Group, who expects the cattle market to climb as long as beef demand holds up.

Yet traders and analysts said gains in the U.S. dollar could limit advances in live cattle futures by trimming expectations for beef exports.

In addition, some market participants said Monday's jump in wholesale beef prices should have been expected as cash prices for cattle remain high. Yet with processing plants facing negative margins at current cash prices, some expect a softer beef markets by the end of the week.

The latest HedgersEdge packer margin index is a minus $22.90 a head, compared with the previous estimate of a minus $27.30. This is a rough estimate of packer returns on the cattle they slaughter and process expressed in the form of an index.

Cash traders still are assessing the effects of the wintry weather blanketing the Plains, market analysts said. No bids and very few offers are being reported.

The cold temperatures likely will cause cattle to lose weight and almost certainly will slow their rate of growth as they use more feed to maintain core body temperature rather than to grow. In the long-run that could limit beef production, but in the short run, more cattle could be put up for sale to limit their weight loss.

Last week, the weighted average for slaughter cattle was about $1.0550 a pound, or $105.50 a hundred pounds, on a live basis, compared with the previous week's value near $1.0625 a pound, or $106.25 a hundred pounds. On a dressed basis, averages were down nearly a dollar at about $168.25 a hundred pounds.

Feeder cattle futures were narrowly mixed in early trading as limited strength from the live cattle market spilled over into feeders. Pressure was coming from a stronger corn market, which means feed costs will rise to take the younger cattle, or feeders, to slaughter weight.

Slaughter rates fell behind last year's rate as packers attempted to give beef markets an added boost by limiting production, traders said. Further declines were expected this week.

The USDA reported cattle slaughter Monday at 119,000 head, compared with 116,000 a week ago and 126,000 a year ago.

Urner Barry's Yellow Sheet, a trade publication, Monday said beef processors reported fill-in business was moderate to good to open the week. Isolated advances were seen in spot markets with gains occurring in some end cuts, thin meats and ground beef.

Smoking bad for health

Smoking is harmful in either ways - constant smoking, occasional smoking or second hand smoke. U. S. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin has released a report, which has showed that ingestion of tobacco in the form of occasional smoking or second hand smoke, both inflicts immediate harm to the body, which could make one severely ill or succumb to it.

The report has been named as `How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease: The Biology and Behavioral Risks for Smoking-Attributable Disease'. It throws light on the detrimental effects of tobacco on the human body. The immediate effects of tobacco use are cell devastation and tissue inflammation. And if one sticks to smoking for a longer period, his/her body's ability to repair the damage suppresses.

Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) stated that during the last two years they had endeavored to check smoking by the way of executing rules to regulate tobacco products, extension in the insurance coverage for quitting tobacco and funding of local tobacco control efforts.

In tobacco, there is a blend of over 7,000 chemicals and compounds and hundreds of them are toxic and t least 70 lead to cancer, as per HHS. Every chemical has its bearing upon the DNA and the mutation could be so harsh that it could give birth to cancer. These chemicals damage blood vessels and increase likelihood of blood clotting. Those using tobacco regularly are at risk to have heart attack, stroke, and aortic aneurysm.
