Sir'Dominic Pointer - A Cleveland Cavalier

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I was cracking up over this last night.

"Look at this job application. Hmmm Shaquille. I was going to put it with the Leclefon's and Answer'fernis but I looked it up and it turns out it is simply a misspelled variant of a real Arabic name first popularized in the late 1680's. This is definitely going in the maybe pile."

:chuckle:

The (not really) funny thing is...

I promise you this happens. Shaquille would get written off too though.

Some guys/gals just look at the resume and ignore the name, no doubt. But I know for a fact that hiring managers will start out with a bad impression of a candidate or out and out discriminate if they see a particularly "alternative" name. And I again want to stress that this isn't right, but I'm telling you that there's an immediate assumption based on the name that the parents are ignorant and thus the candidate is ignorant too. This is a strictly black thing for some, but for most I'd say it's a strictly stupid name thing- white or black. Like if you can figure out based on the resume or a voice over the phone that a girl is a white Destinee or Bryttney, they will also be assumed to be ignorant. If you can't figure out the background, same thing...if the name is considered to be ignorant, the person is assumed to be ignorant.

I say this as someone that has been part of many hiring processes and has been working in a corporate environment with almost exclusively white people for a decade now. The black people I've worked with in the workplace over time have been very "light-skinned," and without exception have had very traditional names.

I am in absolute SHOCK that @gourimoko hasn't stopped in yet. I assume he has zero interest in S'DP and hasn't bothered to stop by OR his cabal of secret black posters that ask him to speak for them hasn't alerted him to it OR he doesn't have the energy right now/ever again to deal with the racist white echo chamber that is RCF.

I don't dispute that at all. I read freakonomics. I was saying the idea that they would discriminate on Destinee, but not on Shaquille because it sort of is a name is not the case.

You are arguing for systemic corporate racism, which I think is true.

Well not FOR it. :chuckle:

Just confirming that it exists and that whether or not people like it, these names (that I think are stupid) aren't helping their cause. You can fight racism and (name discrimination?) by naming your kids these names all you want, but until corporate America consists mostly of people that aren't bothered by names like this...it's a losing battle. Why not make it easy on yourself and give your kid a nice traditional name, if even a little rare, from ANY language? There's THOUSANDS of them to choose from. Don't want to name your kid John/James/William...name him Jean/Jacque/Wilhelm. Do another language. Still a little odd, but at least you're not telling the world you're so obsessed with being different that your kid has to live their life being the only person in the world with their name and having to spell it back to everyone they meet.

When I see the name L'Oral Freeman and Laurel Freeman...I'm making no assumptions of Laurel. I'm looking at her resume. When I look at L'Oral's resume I'm assuming there's a strong chance that L'Oral's parents are idiots.

When I see the name Ja'neene Green and Janine Green...again, no assumptions about Janine. Ja'neene's parents are probably trying to prove something that make me assume they're more likely to have raised her in an annoying way than Janine's parents.

Same with Dyrrick vs Derek, Carsyn vs Carson and Genifyr vs Jennifer. This y subbed for e seems to be a big thing with both neo-yuppies and WT these days and it irritates the piss out of me.

And hiring managers aren't the only place that this happens. I'm also one of many people that make assumptions about the parents of people (and therefore their children) based on these names they're given. And I have no problem admitting it...clearly.

See I would argue if you don't like these names, you think they shouldn't use them, and you actively practice your own discrimination then you are in fact "for it".

To pick a big topic right now...

Would you say that someone who instinctively (not actively or intentionally) reacts to the idea of two men having sex with repulsion but treats gays the same way as straights and has gay friends that he respects is for discrimination against homosexuals?

What if that same person is friends with straight people that dislike homosexuality and are anti-gay marriage, but doesn't agree with their opinions? Is he/she implicitly guilty of homophobia and discrimination?

What if this person actually DISLIKES gays and "disagrees" with their lifestyle, but treats them the same as he/she would straight people and doesn't take any action to affect their lives in any way? Where does that person's guilt lie, if he/she is guilty of anything?

@The Oi is spot on about this. Look, parents aren't doing their kids any favors giving them goofy names. It's not just minority sounding names. Names like Sunshine and Apple would make me look for a Janet or Karen resume too. Plenty of melting pot names to choose from. Even hipster names like Hunter and Mason are ok if you must. Apostrophes should not be in the name, and alternate spellings outside of Bryan with the y are also asking for trouble. I can't exactly explain it, I can just tell you how corporate America works. You want to get the interview and let that personality shine. Funny name can't help, but it can hurt.

Source: I have had to hire people before.

Edit: English. I'm a math guy. English is for pussies.

I don't get why Bryan with a y is getting a pass. It's as bad an offender as Cheniqua in my mind's eye.

Must be Jigo's real name. Otherwise I can't figure it

I find it hard to believe you can simultaneously hate somebody and treat them the same.

However, giving people an opportunity to tell and show their qualifications is about all you can ask.

I think it's silly that some people are allowed to have ethnic names, but black people are the exception. If a Chinese guy has a funny name no one cares.

It doesn't even have to be made up. Have a name like Tyrone and you get discriminated against.

But Bryan Cranston tho...

I don't look at Bryan with a Y as an egregious misspelling. That spelling has been around forever and is extremely common.

Jon Stewart is a douche but enough people like him to where it doesn't matter apparently

Edit: more irritating than adouche, but definitely both

Bryan with a Y is right on the edge for me.... All things equal, Brian is getting the job over Bryan

I didn't say black people aren't allowed to have ethnic names.

Chinese guy with funny names? What the hell? Chinese names are from another language.

You are off the rails in this post.
