Sir'Dominic Pointer was one of, if not, the most energetic players for the Johnnies in his career with the Red Storm. Despite not always being the one of the centerpieces to the Red Storm teams he was a part of, Pointer had the energy and willing can-do ability that served as a motor for the Johnnies. He was often indispensable for his raw athleticism, especially on defense. The 6'6" 196 lbs. Pointer often went toe to toe with opponents who had size on him, but found ways to muscle his way to the rim or on the opposite end of the ball.
This past season for Pointer was his shining moment in his career at St. John's, as he took on a greater role within team serving as a crucial catalyst down the stretch. In seasons prior, he often took a backseat to JaKarr Sampson and Orlando Sanchez, but this past season put Pointer's talents on full display with a fiery ability and versatile approach. He proved that he could take the ball down from the point to attacking the rim. In many ways Pointer become the defensive player that the Johnnies needed the most down the stretch, especially to balance out Chris Obekpa's shot blocking abilities. For his career with St. John's Pointer finished with a stat line of 13.7 PPG, 7.7 RPG, and 3.0 APG.
The one question remains though, where does Sir'Dominic Pointer fit as an NBA prospect heading into the draft?
Well, much like his teammate D'Angelo Harrison, Pointer is a viable prospect though his weaknesses or what he needs to work on going forward might outweigh his strengths heading into the draft. Pointer's biggest draw is his athletic defensive potential. He led the Red Storm this season in rebounds and in the system that he played under Steve Lavin often funneled opponents into taking errant shots. While he was beaten sometimes, especially on the wing, the raw talent is there to be molded and worked with. Add in a touch of scoring to back up his defensive prowess and Pointer could be a tenacious player to go head on against.
The scoring touch, though, is what Pointer lacked at times. With St. John's, he did not have that versatile touch on the offensive end that he often brought on the defensive side of the ball. For his career he shot only 13% from beyond the arc, but, in fairness, he is not a natural scorer. Pointer's points came mostly from attacking the basket and within the paint, seemingly bringing that athletic defensive mindset in his drives to the basket.
Sir'Dominic Pointer has potential to the be solid NBA player, but it seems he'll most likely will have to find his way into the league following the draft. Hopefully he gets his chance, he had a solid career for St. John's and hope it continues as the next level.
