#71: Christian Kirksey, LB, Iowa

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
People were saying Bitonio's deal was an overpay, because he got 10m average but when the details came out it showed the Browns front loaded the first year with a big roster bonus and the rest of the deal was just under $8m average. I'll be surprised if the Kirskey deal isn't front loaded like that, they have all this cap room, might as well use it to boost his 2017 pay and get a reasonable deal for the next 4 years. The only problem with that approach is if these guys play well they will be underpaid towards the end of their deal, but that's a good problem to have.
Yet another savvy cap move by our analytical front office. Same with the salary dump to get a 2nd round pick--I just trust these guys.

I don't think that's correct.

Kirksey got 4 yrs, $38M.

Hightower got 4 yrs., $43.5M

Kirksey got $1M more guaranteed ($20M/$19M), but that's pretty irrelevant given that both would be expected to play out those contracts anyway. Also, Kirksey is 2+ years younger, and entering his fourth year in the league to Hightower's sixth.

In 2015, at age 25 and in his 4th year, Hightower had 3.5 sacks, 51 tackles, 10 assists.
In 2016, at age 26 and in his 5th year, Hightower had 2.5 sacks, 31 tackles, 34 assists.

In 2016, at age 24 and in his 3rd year, Kirksey had 2.5 sacks, 93 tackles, and 50 assists.

I'm just pumped we actually got an outstanding rising talent signed long-term. It helped that he's not a first round draft pick from Alabama, and playing for Cleveland rather than the Super Bowl champs.

So far the most questionable move by this new FO so far in my opinion was drafting Kizer in the second round with technically our fourth pick in this draft. Otherwise so far they haven't really made any mistakes. I'm sure some question letting go of Schwartz, Mack and Pryor, but honestly with Schwartz and Mack, it felt like they were ready to be out of Cleveland and Pryor bet on himself and lost in free agency while we signed Britt. Honestly Kizer and Watson were the two QBs I didn't want from this years group, but the move made sense because we needed a young QB in a class that wasn't all that good. If taking a chance on a Kizer is the worst move an organization makes, then I'll take that FO any day of the week.

So far the signing of Collins and now Kirksey long term really makes this possibly a fairly young and dynamic defense. Being very young they will make mistakes, but overall the talent infusion and the fact we have guys signed long term, should make this really a defense to be scared of in a season or two.

I've mentioned this before in previous years, but Mack and Schwartz couldn't wait to leave. My wife worked with a starting tackle on that Cal Bears line with them. I have first hand knowledge that a few others, including TJ Ward, had planned on being Browns for the long haul as long as they were offered more than another team offered. By the end, Jordan Cameron had betrayed that setup by using the Browns for a higher offer in Miami. Sashcatawny Brown flushed that entire practice down the drain, and it's the right move.

Didn't mean to take us off on a tangent

The only 2 that I really thought were very bad moves (and still do) were Schwartz and Ward.

I fucking HATED the Whitner for Ward tradeoff. So many people tried calling that a wash. We got the significantly worse and older safety. Also pretty sure Ward had the bigger dick

Getting a guy with Kizer's talent and intellect at #52 is no mistake. It's not like they spent a first on him.

I have no idea how you can label it a mistake based on where they got him.

Until you are settled at the QB position, you must continue to take shots at fixing the position.

Don't forget that this guys wanted us to draft defense with every pick in the draft....

Please elaborate...i think.

This is just personal opinion, but I am not high on Kizer as a QB (I didn't want Kizer or Watson since I felt they would both fail in the NFL), it felt like to me he wasn't everything mentally you needed from a QB at times and that still bothers me, but my point is in my mind that's the worse move they have made with this new FO. If the worst move was drafting a guy a fan may not like but was a position of need then honestly the FO is doing things the right way and extending Kirksey was another positive thing this FO has done.

I would have rather had Obi over Kizer at 52 since I really didn't like the QBs in this draft and Kizer was one of my least favorites, but at the end of the day Jackson is very good with QBs and I am hoping Kizer proves me wrong since if he does I think physically he has it all, just I didn't feel mentally he did. I said we could go all defense and I would be happy with it and outside of Kizer, I liked the offensive guys we did get.

Well kizer is gonna be a beast so youre wrong

It feels like to me that you aren't everything mentally needed to be an expert in assessing mental capacity.

I agree that Watson and Kizer were the 2 i didnt want.

And I had a man crush on Obi, so I do agree rather have had him.

But here is the thing, talking about the mental capacity of someone you dont know and he scored a very respectable 28 on the Wonderlic is really just talking out your ass. Higher than Mahommes and Trubisky btw.
