#8: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State University

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Depends on what you look for. Haden really bombed his combine drills and was considered "slow" by some. However his game tape has always been fantastic.

Gilbert struggled his junior year but was really great his senior and sophomore year, and his combine performance was incredible.

I would say that Haden showed better, more refined skills, but Gilbert is the better long term prospect. I would probably take Haden over Gilbert, but it's close.

I flip it.

Always thought Haden could cover and tackle, but was never going to be good enough to get takeaways (which is weird because he has QB sized hands) and was always going to get burned by faster guys (if Joe Haden gets beat, it's either a hold or pass interference.) But Haden was going to never be bad. A really safe corner, to me, and it was why I was admittedly aggravated by the pick. I want Earl Thomas. Both ended up being top at their position.

Gilbert to me has that pizzas that a Revis or a Sanders or a Peterson has. When they get his technique up to Haden's level, Gilbert will absolutely be a better player. Long, and incredible range. Don't really think there's a wide out in the league that just torches him. Dude's gunna ball.

I think Gilbert is a better prospect for one reason, size.

At 200+ pounds while still maintaining the fluidity in his hips and the elite quickness he has the chance to be a truly elite corner in this game.

He can squat down on receivers and play that press man coverage all day long, and to think about the fact he'll be doing it against teams B wide receivers has to make Pettine excited at the thought of blitzing the shit out of opposing QBs.

Pepperoni?

well if he isnt better than haden what a wasted draft pick.. too bad teams cant line up two corners :tomato:

I talked up Fuller before the draft because I thought the Browns could move up from Indy's pick to get him. I didn't know Farmer was going to be that aggressive moving around the draft. Fuller is going to be a very solid corner, but everything I'm seeing from Gilbert is impressive. I heard he gets handsy in coverage and might pick up some interference calls, but that can be coached. I'm very happy the Browns saw cornerback as a big hole and addressed it early.

Hell, I think the Johnny Manziel pick was a total dumpster fire (could have stayed put, gotten Bridgewater, and then used that 3rd for the WR this team desperately needs) and I think his maneuvering with the 4th pick was great. Picked up two future picks AND got an outstanding CB prospect. Great first two moves (and 4th move, for that matter, I like the Bitonio pick).

This dude is the forgotten man. Probably the least pressure on such a high pick I can remember.

Haden approves even a month before the draft.

Gilbert and Joe Haden have chatted already, mainly about different coverages. Gilbert told reporters he needs work on his press-man skills.

It’s the second time Gilbert has said this so it’s worth noting: he loves how Johnny Manziel embraces pressure. Not to say that Gilbert doesn’t, but it’ll make the transition of being a rookie much easier. “I think [Johnny] made the people in Cleveland love me a little bit more once we got him,” Gilbert said with a laugh.

Expect to see Gilbert on special teams early in his career. And not just kick returns, where he set a Big 12 record with six touchdowns. If it means getting on the field, Gilbert doesn’t mind covering punts and kicks. We’ll get a sense for his usage more on Wednesday during OTA’s.

Gilbert and fellow cornerback Pierre Desir are roommates at the team hotel.
