A closer look at Harrison Barnes

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If we pick this kid then I hope we trade Kyrie. Why waste his talents.

I'm sorry, I hate saying stuff like this, especially since everybody is entitled to their own opinions, etc... but this is just asanine.

I think picking barnes makes a lot of sense for the cavs. Two words: floor spacing. One of the reasons kyrie was able to have such an amazing rookie year was that jamison spread the floor and took a man out of the paint. The cavs will not have that next year. Barnes is a very good shooter, and he will be able to at least provide some spacing.

Look at tristan. He is a hustle player, plays his heart out, good offensive rebounder, good defender, very athletic, hard worker, good character, can't shoot the ball at all.

Then MKG. Hustles, plays super hard, very good rebounder, very good defender, athletic, very hard worker, leader, can't shoot the ball.

Frankly, a MKG - TT - Andy frontcourt would provide extremely little spacing. None of those players can shoot the ball at all.

It is also quite ironic that people would rip the cavs for taking tristan because he cant make a shot, then turn around and suggest MKG.

Id still take MKG because at this point in time the cavs cant draft based on need. Also, MKG is only 18, and his shot will definitely improve imo. But barnes definitely makes some sense. This is also really early, so it kind of seems like a smokescreen.

I think Barnes' inability to create off the dribble isn't the worst thing in the world as long as we have the right guys in place around him, primarily a SG who is good at attacking the basket. Offensively, if there was a SF who was weak off the dribble, I think Barnes' skill set is ideal beyond that one facet of his game. (Even though attacking off the dribble is a huge part of what you want your SF to do) Also if we retain Gee, we all know what he can do to offset this weakness of Barnes. I'm warming up to Barnes more and more, maybe just because I think that's who we're going to end up with. To me it's all about that SG given that we draft Barnes.

And last, I think the ability to shoot the ball is overlooked these days.

This is what I think the Cavs are stuck on. Kyrie makes having shooters a more valuable asset. It plays to his strength. While MKG may be a better athlete, he's not necessarily a better fit for the Cavs.

The Cavs may also be worried that MKG is too similar to TT. Tough to spread the floor when your 3 and 4 can't shoot. On the other hand, if your 1 and 3 can shoot, it gives TT more room to operate down low, assuming he continues to develop (which I know for some on this board is an impossibility).

If there was a poll on this board with the only two options being Harrison Barnes, bust or perennial all-star? Everyone if they were honest with themselves would choose bust.

I'd say all star. I mean the worst he can be is Luol Deng. The best he can be is an Carmelo Type of player (less clutch, better defense) but we got kyrie to be clutch.

so at worst he's the third best defensive sf in the league.

okay.

Barnes is safe with upside. Drummond is HUGE risk with Huge upside. For right now, I think that we need to build around Kyrie. Barnes is the best fit IMO because he has intangibles and skill. I don't like how he handled the day he decided where to go to BUT with that being said, he was a kid. Just out of high school. LeBron was a man when he decided. Big difference.

I posted this in the 2012 draft thread but I'm going to spam it here too....

I think Barnes gets an unfair bad rap. He's still not my pick of choice, but I wouldn't be upset with him. He's an above average athlete IMO, he just doesn't utilize his athleticism that much. When he does, he shows the ability to hang in the air, square up his shoulders, and still knock down the shot on the way down - kinda reminds me of LeBron (his solid strength/frame certainly help him here, too). His release is really quick, and his shooting mechanics make hit shot difficult to block; he shoots it from pretty high up and back. As a third option I could imagine him being a ~%38+ three point shooter. He's also great at using shot fakes on the perimeter. His dribbling will need to improve if he wants to be an elite slasher as opposed to a straight-line slasher. His pullup jumper is lightning quick too, which is a deadly combo with his aforementioned shooting form. He could have a pretty nasty two dribble step-back jumper.

I just don't like the Black Falcon thing :thumbdown

It's actually jaw dropping when people call him "just a spot up shooter". I really never thought that a board full of such intelligent people could honestly be so dumb.

That's what he is offensively. A spot-up shooter with nothing else consistent to offer.

So the dude is going to be able to defend like no other and we already know he can shoot. All he has to do is be more assertive and work on his handles? I mean do you really think he is going to be garbage?

We have a coach that is known for developing players and it is important to note how much better barnes was with his Point Guard.

Kyrie would make him even better.

Barnes is not my first choice but you need to think about this. He can defend and he can shoot he needs to be more aggressive and handle the ball better to really realize his full potential.

Dont you think that could be developed much easier than a jumpshot like MKG needs to do?

Im just staying that if he can already shoot and defend you have almost all of the pieces of this puzzle.

If we end up with barnes i will still be happy. All of this crap about him not being able to drive is waywaywayway overstated. He would be find in our system because we have an elite point guard and i definitely believe he has the potential to develop everything you are looking for.

I mean cmon. I think there is potential here.

Only if Beal is gone would I consider Barnes. If Beal is there and we still pick Barnes, then were fucked. I get that his highly intelligent with a strong character but his lacks certain things I want from a number 4 pick.

Is it bad that I want a Harden type of player from such a high pick ? A guy who can spot up, create in the pick n roll, get to the rim and defend his position ?

All Barnes is right now is just a shooter. And you guys are right his speed does remind me of Ron Artest.

Again I can live with this pick but only if Beal is gone.
