ECF: Cavs 4 - Hawks 0

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
the hawks play uptempo basketball maximizing ball movement, 3 pt shooting, and their bigs can run and put the ball on the floor.. the best way (i think) to counter their offense is to slow the game down, and switch every pick n roll.. i liked what blatt did at the end of the 2nd quarter where the cavs played zone after a man to man press.. the hawks did not score.. put lbj on milsap and have a line up off kyrie/smith/shump/lbj/mozgov..

Yes, except Blatt's favorite smallball lineup seems to be something like Irving, Delly, LeBron, Jones, TT.

I really wish we could rely on Love to contribute more. Atlanta is not a dominant team size wise but he still doesn't seem to be able to get anything going inside

Size. Rebounding. Reliance on the jumper. Lack of a defensive stopper on the perimeter. Inability to consistently get to the line. No take over the game player for crunch time moments. Playoff experience.

They are a very good team, I just don't think it's going to translate to the playoffs nearly as well as it has to the regular season.

These guys don't have a championship level Tony Parker or a Kawhi style two way threat. Not to mention a player with the creativity of Manu.
I don't know. I think you're exaggerating their weaknesses a little. This is after all a team that has 49 wins with a month and a half left in the season, so they've got to be doing something right.

Size: The Hawks have good size from 1-3 but I'll give you that they're a little undersized down low. However in my opinion length and reach are much more important for bigs and Al Horford and Paul Millsap are both long, each with 7'1+ wingspans that make up a little for their lack of height.

Rebounding: True they're not particularly strong in this area, but we only average 2 more rebounds a game more than them and they're actually ok in defensive rebounds. The area where they're low is offensive rebounds but honestly this is largely because they take and make such high percentage shots (3rd in FG% in the league), so there aren't many offensive rebounds available.

Reliance on the jumper: We only average 1 more ppg more than them in the paint. They really don't rely too much on the jumper. They have a pretty good inside-out game with guys like Teague and Shroeder who can slash very well, Mike Scott and Demarre Carroll who are pretty good at getting in the paint, and a very good post up big in Al Horford, plus Millsap who's alright in the post.

Lack of a Defensive Stopper on the Perimeter: Not true. His name is Demarre Carroll and he's a very good perimeter defender. It's actually his calling card.

Inability to Get to the Line Consistently: They do average 2 less free throws per game than us, however they are a very good free throw shooting team, so they average only 1 less free throw make a game. Not a noticeable difference.

No Take Over the Game in Crunch Time Guy: This is true. But they don't need one guy. They have a lot of guys who can score so who cares if they don't have a guy who can completely take over. They move the ball well so they'll be able to get open shots. And Teague is very clutch (pretty sure he hit that one bullshit game winner in OT against us last year actually lol), and Paul Millsap has had plenty of game winners himself, so I don't think it's too big of a a concern.

Playoff Experience: They don't have championship experience like we do in Lebron, but I'm pretty sure every guy on their entire roster has played in the playoffs before and lots of them have played past the first round/well past the first round (Horford, Millsap, Teague, Sefolosha, Brand...). This is more of a concern for us, seeing that 2 of our main 3 players have absolutely 0 playoff experience.

Overall, I think people are really sleeping on the Hawks. I believe in this Cavs team and I really think this is our year, but the Hawks are no joke, and no matter who wins, that series will probably go 7 games and should be tough for both teams.

the one positive takeaway I took from this game tonight was when Atlanta starts getting fouls called against them and the other squad is turning up the defensive intensity, they start to crack. Newsflash, in the postseason all those hits you get away with on James now will almost be called EVERY time in the postseason.

He had one attempt inside the three point line. It seems everyone is happy with him being a spot up shooter. We also didn't utilize Mozgov. A lot of the offensive struggles were due to the Hawks D attacking the pick and rolls and making everything uncomfortable for Kyrie and LeBron, but you have to adjust the game plan to the opponent. I don't think small ball is necessarily the best option against a team built to play that way.

We need a backup PG that can penetrate and score like Schroeder. Every player on the Atlanta team can shoot and shoot well. And they pass the ball well so they are hard to defend. We did a reasonable job after the first quarter but we need to bring in the defensive intensity from the start. We also need to start passing the ball more instead of all this dribbling and isolation plays.

Atlanta had "Time".
Time to rest. Time to practice and install a specific "Game Plan".
Come the post season, barring an extended series, all Time will be equal.

LeBron is going to have to play bigger if we want to play small.

That means he's gotta rebound in the playoffs like he did for Miami and he's gotta play in the post.

Lets be real. LeBron should be able to guard Millsap. If he does what he's supposed to do we beat these guys in 6 or 7 games.

This is true as well. They did catch us on a 3rd game in 4 nights.

Blatt has not had "Time".
Time to get Perk up to speed and to some extent, JR and Shump. Relax, Blatt has already mentioned that after this rough ass stretch of games, he will have "Time" to practice with the team and get them on the same page. (Offense and Defense)
Coming back from a 17 point bitch-slap is "Hard".

Thinking about it more, ATL was the very last team we wanted to play coming off a 3rd game in 4 nights. They had fresh legs and had a couple days to think about exactly what they were gonna do and had time to even practice it.

Any good team would've given us a hard game and even better only lost by 10. It's funny how little the regular season matters. They have the best record but if you look at the pulse of social media this is their statement win.

They remind me of our 08' 09' team, when we had the best record but everyone pretty much knew it was the Celtics' conference. And when we beat that Celtics team we were excited not like the number one team would be but excited like an underdog would be.

But talking about ATL I watch them play and my confidence gets shakey. 5 guys on the court at any time that can pass shoot and defend. Then we have to account for that German point guard who is gonna do whatever he wants every game because no one on our team can guard him and it gets scary.

ATL is a harder team to beat than the warriors. ATL defeated the warriors last month despite great shooting by the splash brothers. You can control the warriors by shutting down the splash brothers. You have to shut down all 5 players for ATL. They play the kind of Spurs like game that Lebron hates playing against and is very vulnerable to.

They are better than anyone wants to admit. They played every defensive possession. Their shooting is great. They play like a team. When the Cavs were playing as a team, I thought they would be hard to beat. I have much less confidence in their iso style they have been playing lately

-Schroeder scares the hell out of me. i'm not a fan of cutting Joe Harris but Delly has no chance trying to stay in front of this guy and i would hate to lose a game or two in a close series because this guy goes off

I thought this was the biggest takeaway from last night (beyond Blatt screwing with his rotation and having LeBron out there too long in the first and third quarters, especially when he was clearly having an off night). Shroder could get to any spot on the floor and ended up a +10. Delly was -11.

Plus/minus can be misleading but not in this case. Delly is a liability to begin with and against a backup PG of Shroder's quality, he could be a season killer.

The Cavs have to figure out an alternative before they meet in the post-season. I think the most likely scenario is Shumpert/Marion/Tristan coming off the bench, with Perk and Jones an option depending on match-ups (ie, the need for Perk to foul the crap out of someone). Delly shouldn't see the floor in a close series.
