Yes, special waiver due to his father's illness.

Clayton Moore left the program today. Would have been #3 on the depth chart behind Dalton Williams and Redshirt freshman Kyle Pohl.

BRUNSWICK — Former Gazette boys basketball MVP Pat Forsythe is coming home.

The 6-foot-11 center was officially released from his scholarship by West Virginia University on Monday, allowing him to enroll at the University of Akron on Aug. 1.

Forsythe will continue his college basketball career with the Zips, but must sit out the 2012-13 season under NCAA Division I transfer rules. The Brunswick native will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“My first official college visit was actually at Akron — before I committed to WVU — so I knew it was the right place for me,” Forsythe said between afternoon workouts at Brunswick High.

“I really wanted to be closer to my family and I felt very comfortable with Coach (Keith) Dambrot and his staff. I’m excited to get started there and to be back home.”

Forsythe appeared in seven games as a freshman with the Mountaineers, averaging 2.1 points and 3.4 rebounds before suffering a season-ending stress fracture in his right ankle. The 240-pound pivot grabbed seven rebounds against Alcorn State, while his scoring high was four points, set against Akron and Mississippi State.

As a result of the injury, Forsythe was granted a medical hardship waiver by the Big East Conference for a fifth season of eligibility at West Virginia. That status, however, will not transfer with him to the Zips.

Nor will Forsythe’s scholarship, as the 19-year-old sports management major will be paying for his studies during his initial season at Akron. He carried a 3.1 grade point average at West Virginia, making him a prime candidate to be back on scholarship in the fall of 2013 with the Zips.

“Obviously, Pat had offers from many other universities, but this decision really wasn’t about basketball,” Blue Devils coach Joe Mackey said of his one-time franchise player. “At this point, he just needs to be closer to his dad (Patrick), who is legally blind, and his sight has worsened in the past year. Although he can’t see a whole lot, he loves coming to his son’s games.

“Pat feels like his dad has been there for him his whole life, and it’s time to repay the favor a little bit.”

Mackey and Forsythe both praised Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins for his handling of the situation, along with West Virginia’s medical and training staff for their physical rehabilitation program.

Though he will formally join the Zips late next week, Forsythe must return to Morgantown, W.V. at least one more time. He was arrested on charges of using stolen debit cards in March — being arraigned and released on a $2,500 bond — and has a court date in October.

“We’ve been very upfront with Akron about the bad decisions that Pat made,” Mackey said. “Everything should be cleared up in the fall, and he can move on with his life and his studies.”

In the meantime, Forsythe will be permitted to use the Zips’ athletic facilities while he becomes familiar with Dambrot’s style of play.

“I believe their offensive and defensive systems are better fits for me,” he said. “West Virginia ran more of a motion offense where I was on the perimeter, but at Akron, I’ll have my back to the basket a lot and be able to use my post moves. I feel like that’s where I can help the team the most on the court.”

Forsythe was named the 2011 Medina County MVP after averaging 22.5 points, 12.6 rebounds and 6.1 blocked shots at Brunswick. He also was a unanimous choice as the All-Northeast Inland District Division I Player of the Year and earned All-Ohio first team honors.


Not only do they have a replacement waiting in the wings for Zeke Marshall, but he should also push Zeke in practices to make him better.

If you ask me, I dont think him having to sit out is final.

I dont see how he doesnt get a special waiver from the NCAA. They give those out like candy in basketball. The player from CMU, Trey Zeigler, was allowed to transfer from there to Pitt and play right away, all because his daddy got fired.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out. To be quite honest though, I can't remember the last big-man transfer that came into the MAC from a big time school and had any significant impact. Most of the time it's guards that come in and make some noise (two recent examples off the top of my head are Walter Offutt and Armon Bassett). Not saying he doesn't turn out to be a good player, but a lot of the big guys that end up transferring down were simply recruited for their size and potential more than their actual playing abilities.

Based on what I can see, WVU was the only "BCS" level program that offered him. The fractured foot has to be a bit concerning, especially for a man of his size. Also, I see that he was arrested on petit larceny charges in March when he and another member of the basketball team made purchases on some debit cards from a wallet they found that belonged to another WVU student. Should be interesting to see what happens. Ohio has a PF transfer coming in from Mizzou by the name of Kadeem Green. He'll be available sometime in December I believe. I've heard a lot of great things about him, but it really means nothing until we see him on the floor.

Forsythe was a late bloomer, under the radar. He held an offer from OSU as well. He was getting minutes for WVU last season until he went down with injury. The debit card thing, I cant comment on details, but the reason he is transferring back home is because of his father going blind, not because of disciplinary issues.

#71 overall...not bad. I'm also hearing the hardship waiver is still a possibility.

Definitely a talent without a doubt. Will be interesting to see how he recovers from that foot fracture though. I guess if he has to sit out a year that should help. As an obvious huge fan of the Ohio Bobcats and the MAC in general, it benefits the conference as a whole to have these types of guys coming in. His presence in practice will really help Zeke this year as well.

Slightly off topic, but this just further demonstrates to me why the MAC should have devoted more resources to b-ball years ago. There are currently 3 really strong PROGRAMS that should be good for a while (Ohio, Akron, Kent), one that looks to be building in Toledo, and a Buffalo program that has been on the verge for a while but just can't really seem to get over the hump. With decent funding (and possibly dropping a couple bottom feeders) the MAC could actually become a strong basketball conference. Though we are in big10 country, the Ohio / Indiana / Illinois / Kentucky / Michigan region is an absolute hot bed for high school basketball talent. With the footprint the MAC currently holds, it could be a great Mid-Major conference with even marginal resources.

The football team defeated Morgan State (Who?) 66-6 yesterday. Outgained them 753 yds to 200. The QB Dalton Williams went 37-48 446 yds and 3 TDs.

4th in FBS passing yds at 1004 yds and 2nd in passing TDs at 10
 
23-20 Akron beating Tennessee in Tennessee.....

You should watch.

Gave them a scare and a run, but Tennessee is just far more talented right now for Akron.
