Alonzo Gee: Mr. April!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

So let me get this straight, Alonzo is pissed because we extended to him the highest possible qualifying offer we could? Now he's butt hurt because he's not getting any offers from other teams, so he's going to intentionally miss summer league? Makes absolutely no sense to me, what am I missing?

To me this screams that his agent is giving him advice, regardless of how bad it may seem, because this will probably be the only chance Gee has to become over paid (not that athletes aren't overpaid to begin with)

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

The qualifying offer is only good for a year. After that he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Which, if he makes another considerable step in development this season... wouldn't be particularly good for the Cavs.

I'm hoping the lack of interest will allow the Cavs to sign him to a 3-4 year deal worth about 10-15 million.

i can't see that happening. really, there only appears to be two options at this point. one being some other team makes a bid on him, forcing cleveland to make a decision. the second option is that there is no real interest. then, Gee takes his one year QO, which isn't that bad, and tries to cash in as an UFA next offseason. i just don't see him being willing to sign a long term deal to slightly more on a yearly basis than his current QO.

I just can't imagine his agent would be such a fool. Does this Telich guy have much/any credibility?

No, he doesn't have any credibility.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

Minor update from the PD. Telich should never be quoted as a source again on RCF.

Alonzo Gee's agent said he and his client are hopeful a deal can be done with the Cavs.

"It's still early,'' Andre Buck said. "We've talked several times, and I'm sure we'll continue to talk. Hopefully we can reach an agreement to keep Alonzo here.''

The Cavs made a $2.7 qualifying offer to Gee, which was pre-determined by the collective bargaining agreement. Gee told The Plain Dealer in April that he was not planning to take part in the summer league. His absence is unrelated to the qualifying offer.

From Finnan:

Speaking of free agents, there doesn’t seem to be much of a market for Cavs forward Alonzo Gee to date. There has been no offer for the Cavs to match. One agent said he’d recommend the 6-foot-6 forward to take the $2.7 million qualifying offer he was offered.

Talk of him getting a four-year, $16 million offer from the Suns is long gone. The Cavs could still make him a multiyear offer that would be extremely cap friendly.

Great news for us. I'd love to give him something similar to the 4 year $16 mill deal, only make this one heavily frontloaded towards the first two years.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

If Gee gets no offer, I am curious if he would take something like 4 years, 12 million or if he would take the risk and just except the QO of 2.7 mil.

Even though Gee improved a lot, in his situation, turning down 12 million is a big risk IMO. Who knows if he continues to improve. He may even digress. You never know.

If I was him, I'd take the 12 mil. I hope we can get him signed for 3-4 years for cheap.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

Gee's just finished a two-year contract for $1.4M. If he doesn't get any reasonable offers from other teams this year, it's hard to imagine he would turn down a multi-year offer with a substantial raise from the Cavs. Things might not be that much better next year if he takes the QO. Hopefully, it will be a situation where Gee's interests (a good payday and a very good chance to play) will match the Cavs interests (sign a young, developing player for X years without overpaying by that much). Ideally, either frontload the contract or negotiate a team option for the 4th year.

It just takes one free-spending GM/owner to mess things up, though, and there is a long way to go in free agency. When the Cavs signed Gibson in a similar situation (RFA), it was on July 16 of that year. It would be great to have things wrapped up by that time this year.

I usually sign Gee to a 5 year contract worth around $8 million in 2K, the Cavs should sign him to a deal like that. :chuckles:

I like the idea of o a front loaded contract, and I would think Gee would as well.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

Their main concern is retaining Alonzo Gee, whose agent reportedly wants a "Landry Fields contract." The Knicks guard received a 3-year, $19 million offer sheet from Toronto.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

Gee wants almost 7 per year because that's about as overpaid as he could possibly dream of becoming.

In reality, he's worth less than 5 million, and the most I could see another team offering (just to force our hand) is around 6 mill per.

Re: Cavs make qualifying offer to Alonzo Gee (now RFA)

I'm fine with 6 million per (3y, 18M) IF it is extremely front loaded. 8M, 7M, 3M? I'm certainly no contract guru but I doubt that is allowed. Maybe 7, 6, 5? Either way I think Alonzo will be back here for sure. They're just trying to get as much money as possible which is very understandable.
