Anderson Varejao

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Z started to decline after his back problems started mounting. Pay attention to whether this is just a pull or whether a chronic condition that flares up through the end of the season. It's a big time decision whether to resign varejao and a bad back could finish him in cleveland.

His value is that someone can clear 15million by trading for him, and then they can release Andy and save a total of 10.5 million. His value is the non-guarantee at this point. Skill wise he is too injury prone to have any value at all.

That is such crazy and ridiculous thinking.
Even if Andy missed most of the regular season and could only play in the playoffs, that would be worth it for a team.
He still has plenty of value with the skills he does provide on the court, he just needs to be used in a smarter way.

you just assume that he's going to be randomly healthy for the playoffs though. I don't think you can count on him for his almost 10million dollar salary. That's way too much coin for a guy that has played 25, 25, and 31 games the last three years. Maybe you can stretch him out by only playing him 25minutes a game but that's a pretty large gamble at his salary.

Look at this objectively.
Andy's injuries aren't conventional injuries...he hasn't broken any bones, his muscles are all perfectly fine. He's been out with a combination of bruises and soreness. Those ailments are CLASSIC examples of him being overworked, not anything else. They're also the kind of ailments that if he was used and managed better, he could be fresh and a difference maker in the playoffs.

Andy's knee and back were already sore in the days leading up to that Memphis game, but he played through it because the coach needed him. And the thing that makes him valuable is he was still very effective on the court despite being so beat up.

I hear people talking about Andy not being reliable, but him missing so much time was COMPLETELY preventable if you cared about not wearing him down. If you're the coach and you play Varejao 35-40 minutes a night, knowing the intense style of play he has...what the fuck do you think is gonna happen?!

I don't count out anything. I want to hear from the staff where Andy is. One blink and he might be done for the year regardless. Let's pray that isn't the case as he will make the team better in the stretch run.

Varejao and Waiters make the team as whole as it's been since The Lebron years. The team is fixable moving forward with some help. I give them a much better shot at making the play offs than I thought I would. I like the way the team is constructed.

Just so we are all dealing with the real data.

Andy's injury history.
2004-2005 out jan 26 to march 6
2005-2006 did not play until jan 27
2006-2007 no significant injury time
2007-2008 jan 30 to Feb 24
2008 2009, no significant injury time
2009-2010 no significant time

all of the above were playoff years

2010-2011 out jan 5 rest of season
2011-2012 out feb 11 rest of season
2012-2013 out dec 19 rest of season
2013-2014 out jan28 so far..

Last years issues were an exception as he had a life threatening condition from a oddball injury. But i think the front office made a decision in the non playoff years not to push Andy to preserve his longevity.

If Andy returns and continues to play, it will be because the FO really thinks we can make the playoffs. if our trajectory is not there, i think they pull Andy for the season. Similar with Dion, less so with Miles.

when we talk about trading Andy, that is always possible, but his value elsewhere is perhaps lower than his value here. I think signing Andy is a no brainer if he wants to stay on, but I dont think it is a giant contract.

Let's just say if I had to choose 4 big men on our roster who I wanted for the next 3 years I would say Zeller, Hawes, TT, Bennett. Nothing against Andy, he's just always injured and has a lot of wear and tear on him. He's also getting up there in age

I'd bury Zeller over Andy. Varejao brings a game to the table you can't put a price on. Plus, his leadership on this team is HUGE. He needs to retire a Cavalier.

For the next 3 years you would take Varejao over Zeller?

I have no idea what Andy's timetable is, or if he is done for the year, but I would kill to see a lineup of Kyrie, Dion, Deng, Andy, Hawes down the stretch.

Every time I see this thread bumped I assume it will be an official press release saying he's been ruled out for the year, possibly with some sort of emergency amputation involved.
