Anderson Varejao

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You guys are nuts to think that they would waive, trade, or cut Andrew Bynum.

We need a long term rim protector, and suddenly, when one is available, everyone gets cold feet in trading Varejeo who is 31?

We aren't winning the title this year, and our window to trade Varejeo is limited....I personally like Asik, as it opens up a lot of additional options for trades down the line (and, if Bennett can put it together, he and Asik would be dynamite together on the 2nd unit/future 1st unit).

Our floor spacing is a problem anyways. Regardless of what moves we make, we absolutely need our PF's (Tristan and Bennett) to be able to spread the floor.

Can't understate the impact Andy's had there though. He's been one of the best midrange shooters in the NBA so far this season, and his passing game opens up the floor as well. We would lose all that with Asik.

Still, we're talking about a guy who's nearly a Marc Gasol clone on defense, and we'd have the luxury of bringing Bynum in off the bench. I guess I would do the trade and figure out the floor spacing issues later. It's not often we get a chance to trade for a guy with elite level talent who's just entering the prime of his career.

They wouldn't have a choice.

The plan for 3 years now has been to have room for a full max deal for the summer of 2014.

We can't get there without waving Bynum (and declining Clark's option) if we got Asik.

Asik isn't good offensively, but he doesn't hurt you. Center is the one position where you can get away with that, too. He doesn't need to open up the floor, that's not the Center's job. Andy's defense is not good anymore, and Bynum is not a solution, just a band-aid. Asik can be a solution.

Perfectly put. Offensively gifted big men, especially centers, are rare. If you have an opportunity to get one of the best defensive centers in the league you do it. Spacing could be solved by adding a stretch four which is abundant in the league. Heck, you can get away with a SF playing that role.

Asik is not coming to Cleveland.

While I agree that it probably wouldn't be the best scenario for this year, I think it's pretty clear that Bynum and Andy are not viable long term options for the team. They are both having fantastic years for the Cavs, but what about two years from now? Will Andy still be a serviceable center? Will Bynum's knees hold up, and if they do, how much will it cost to keep him?

Asik is the same age as Bynum, and while he will never be the defensive or offensive threat that Bynum is or the help defender/energy big that Varejao is, he is still a solid, reliable player that could be a good core player for us for a number of years. Given the price of the big man market and the lack of free agent interest in Cleveland, I don't think it would be a bad move to cash in some of our short term assets to shore up our team with viable long-term options like Asik.

The Cavs had no problem looking at Big-Z as a long term asset despite his foot problems that kept him off the court for a year. What makes you believe they won't do the same with Bynum? They can always draft a young big to act as an insurance policy like Varejao did for Z.

Is it a gamble? Sure, but you don't get anywhere in the NBA without taking a gamble. Big men who can postup down low, rebound, and defend the rim like Bynum don't grow on trees. They don't arrive on the FA market without some risk attached.

On the other hand, I can understand Varejao not being a long term asset. He's 31 years old. I just think his trade value could be more useful to upgrade the SF position.

Clark's second year is guaranteed, Gee has a team option.

sure they have choices. It depends on how far Bynum recovers.

Trade Andy and Jack, release Clark, decline option on Gee. We can do that, keep Bynum and sign a max player. Or we can keep the first 3 and release Bynum.

From a personality perspective I don't really want a guy who pouted about being replaced by a better player at his position and then signs on with a new agent to ensure he gets traded. I know athletes should have that competitive nature, but honestly he just seems like he is out for him and if the team wins its just icing on the cake.

You can't be serious...

All I know is when Bynum was in trade talks in L.A. he would quit playing hard. He was tired of always being in trade rumors, Maybe he heard about this before the last game and that's why he played so poorly. If the Cavs have him in trade discussions instead of letting him know he's not going anywhere, I'm afraid of how his game will suffer. He needs it to be let known that the Cavs want to build around him and then he will play his heart out. It's not a great attribute to always have, but that's who he is.
